Given that I have worked in a fabric/haberdashery shop for over 2 years and have only just managed to have the time to make a quilt of any type is a massive deal. The fact it’s for my 3 month old niece also makes it super special!
I wanted to keep it really simple and beginner quilter friendly so there was less chance I’d mess it up. Moda has a free pattern called ‘One Charm Pack Plus’ which is perfect as all you have to do is sew a charm pack together along with some borders.
I knew that I wanted the ‘Fish Tales’ charm pack right away, it has a lovely mix of pinks and greys that goes with the baby’s room but also some lovely blues and greens that make it a bit brighter and likely to last as she grows. Since her name is Lily, the lily pads HAD to be used as the backing. It was too good to pass up something so perfect!
Onto the hard bit, organising the squares....There are some quilters I’ve met (my boss included) that have a knack for haphazardly putting the squares down and it being perfect. I am not one of those people. It stressed me out far too much trying to avoid having a section with too much of one colour. I eventually settled on this with the help of one of my furry project overseers.
Pulling everything together would probably have went quicker if overseer number two wasn’t obsessed with the sewing machine...
Or comfort testing the quilt. Again, as it was my first I stuck with easy diagonal quilting lines across, nothing fancy at all as I didnt want to run the risk of having to unpick it all and ruin the fabric. After about an hour of trying to find a tutorial that was clear enough I finally mastered the continuous bias cutting technique, bound it all up and set to hand sewing the back.
Points aren’t as sharp as the probably could have been but meh, it’s a baby quilt.
So pleased with how it all turned out, roughly 36″ x 36″ which is a great size for putting in her pram, using as a play mat etc.
Little finishing touch added! Unfortunately when I popped by to see Lily she was already sound asleep and all snuggled but she is the cutest bean I’ve ever laid eyes on (I am totally biased), and I can’t wait to see her grow with her blanket!
