Because any and all SLs, whether big or small, must only be for Robert. So what those two characters have their own histories. They’ve stolen what Robert is owed and that’s unfair.
It must be exhausting watching an ensemble programme like Emmerdale with that level of one character tunnel vision. Just setting themselves for disappointment time and time again.
yuppp i don't get what they enjoy in the show when they're only here for robert (or, honestly, ryanbert) and a robert that is only exists in their head at that. it's why i get so annoyed at their complaints, not only at the ridiculous misogynistic robcentric ones, but also at all of their constant negativity. i think i could deal with it easier if their posts were interspersed by lbing old episodes or sls, or if they had any engagement with other characters on more than a surface-level 'how can we connect this back to robert being mistreated?" basis.
it must be so exhausting to link every single storyline or character interaction in an ensemble back to one character, and to always find fault in that character not actually being the centre of the universe. which is always going to happen because it is an ensemble. it will never live up to their standards of being the robert show and so, like you said, they only set themselves up for disappointment. there's so much of this show to enjoy. you can bemoan what it has become (i also don't think it's at its best) but it is so long running and there are so many episodes so surely they can find something to enjoy instead of constant disappointment.

Beyond the obvious misogyny (that such a heavy SL was given to a woman), one of the recurring themes in Robcel discourse is their fixation on Robert supposedly always being positioned as the villain. Their constant complaint is that the show has no real interest in redeeming him properly, both in-universe and to the audience, especially that section of the GA that still sees Robert as a snake. That, I think, is also part of what is behind the reaction of quite a few of them. They cannot bear the idea that Charity will now attract sympathy and that the baby deceit will not be dealt with in the punitive way they wanted. Suddenly they are outraged on behalf of Mack, Sarah and Jacob, insisting that they now won't be 'allowed' to feel angry or betrayed because everyone will now sympathise with Charity. They are framing it as the audience being denied the reveal they were 'owed' and the other characters being robbed of their 'legitimate' emotional reactions to the baby deception. It's not like they ever gave a fuck about Sarah or Jacob before. They have repeatedly called both Sarah and Jacob annoying, dispensable characters who should be axed ahead of others. They don't care about Mack either, except when he is Robron’s # 1 cheerleader or, eventually, a potential friend for Robert too. They just hate that this SL will give Charity an immediate route to sympathy, almost redemption, without the consequences they wanted her to face. It's the kind of narrative compassion they so desperately want for Robert but which the show and much of the GA still refuse to grant him. Even Laura Shaw is not fully committing to redeem Robert - she only turned him into this pathetic character who is still not trusted by the village rather than someone truly transformed. No producer has ever attempted a complete redemption arc for Robert and no future producer ever will. Because they know who Robert is. Long may the show continue to portray him as slippery and not entirely trustworthy even when they try to make him 'sympathetic'.

this is all just so central to the robcel thesis. they refuse to accept that robert is always going to be an antagonist, and producers and the ga will always want that part of him left open for the future. they go on and on about his legacy and importance to the show but refuse to acknowledge the fact that for so much of his history does have him as a villain, a sympathetic one at times yes, but, ultimately, a villain. for the show to go anywhere with him in the future they need him not to be completely evil and irredeemable but they also need the potential for him to take that position.
it's all a part of their desire for a balancing act, of each action having an equal and opposite reaction. they think that all the characters should be punished for their wrongdoings and redeemed for their lack of wrongdoings, although, in practice, the latter only ever matters for them in the case of robert. they're forever waiting for a redemption arc that will never and, imo, should never come.
i get wanting an easy end to some sls, and i do think emdale have a habit of not being able to find a middle ground between letting sls end abruptly without a conclusion and just forever making them more convoluted until it has detached from the original purpose of the sl. and i don't necessarily trust emdale to land the ending with the baby, bullying, and sa sls but the very fact that they exist and are don't centre robert is not necessarily bad and to write it off before it starts is just reductive and pessimistic. to immediately assume that this is just being done for shock factor or trauma porn, or for charity to be redeemed in place of poor robert is just again centring the feelings and reactions of the other characters over those of charity, the actual victim.

this might be the most insane take i've seen today irt robert, and it has had some stiff competition. robert? our robert??? loves to feel needed robert? manufactures environments and relationships in order to be needed robert?? doesn't accept that aaron needs him???? famously needy aaron? aaron 'i can't be this pathetic needy person anymore' dingle??? and robert can't accept that aaron needs him? robert 'do you know how hard it is looking after everyone but myself' 'who's ever there for me' sugden?????
sure since 2016 he's never outright denied that he needed aaron. but he also never let himself need aaron. that was the whole point of the divorce. that robert won't let aaron be there for him. if that's not denying that he needs him idk what is. are we even watching the same show?? are they even watching the same show as other robcels???
maybeee if you take rob at his best and twist him repeatedly threatening to turn himself into the police as him thinking aaron needs his family more than him then this argument could maybe potentially make some sense if you squint. but the entire statement is just so untrue the mind boggles. it's just the sort of sentence you get out of a tropey miscommunication hurt/comfort blorbo needs a hug copy and paste fanfic that reveals such an inability to engage with the material itself you start to wonder if they're even a fan of the show.
and correct me if i'm wrong but i thought that the robcel narrative was that aaron needed robert too much and never gave anything back? but now they're saying that it was actually robert who was the needy one? who never let anyone need him? anything to turn robert into perpetual insecure traumatised victim. mad. they're really just saying anything these days.

This post perfectly sums up a Robcel post I’ve just seen. Charity’s new SL has been announced and their first thought is: bUt iT ShOUld HaVe bEEn RoBerT aNd kEv 🙄🙄
yesss that's exactly what i thought! they have to relate everything back to robert and what they think he Deserves.
there seems to be an odd fixation on Fairness from robcels in their assessment of sls. aaron has an sa sl so now robert Must have one (rebecca). then aaron has an abuse sl so robert Must have one (kev). now charity gets the sa/abuse sl that robert Should have got but she's already had one and that's not Fair. they seem to be counting and weighing and bartering every sl trying to make the show appeal to their idea of Fairness and Equality. but this only applies to robert. they don't care about the characters or themes or stories. they just care who gets them. it's like they think these sls are chosen at random or through producers' or writers' prejudices and not through the actual realities of these events in real life where certain people are more vulnerable. robert is not the sort of person or character to have these sls and the fact that they think this is because of a lack of Fairness or Balance just goes to show their prioritising of robert's interiority over that of any other character. only robert is allowed to be a Character. because he is The Character. and so he Deserves these sls because it would be Fair and not because it would actually be real or meaningful for him.
for them robert is Deep and Male and charity is just Female. i've seen people describe her actions in the baby plot as vile and say she's done worse than robert. which is a crazy thing to say about an abuse victim, saying her cheating is worse than robert's many violent and abusive actions. not to mention the fact that he himself lied and cheated for months just last summer and faced no consequences for it. but of course he's allowed to do that because he is Character with Reasons but charity is Vehicle for Plot so she doesn't deserve to get another sl that should be for robert. because it's just Not Fair.
this is a lot of words for me to basically say that their whole thing just reeks of misogyny. it's the prioritisation of men's depth and interiority, without any regard for women. they don't see charity as anything more than Vehicle for Storylines and so if she gets so many Storylines but Deep Complex Traumatised Misunderstood Character robert gets nothing then it's Unfair and Bad Representation. it's just a very childish and unnuanced way of approaching the show and i'm getting very tired of it.
