YOU. YOU GET IT. Eloise bridgerton and Mary Bennet in TOBS certainly have trusts in common but at the end of the day, their core beliefs and desires in relation to romance are starkly different and that is FINE , it does not make either of them lesser than the other just different. Forcing Eloise into a romantic plotline goes against what has been set up for her character for an entire four seasons and is genuine character assassination as compared to Mary who grows into her character and desires throughout the story and finds romantic love like she desired which is character growth not assassination.

I'm not sure I'll ever stop being pissed off by people who think "woman who has correct views on the oppression of women and therefore doesnt want to marry being continually softened and coerced into the idea until she relents" is good writing

Jess ruined Eloise and you cannot change my mind. S4 Eloise was written with the very poorly-thought, very banal, loose trope of "she's hasn't found the right man yet/she has the wrong idea of marriage" because that's all they can give her. Just rewatch the first couple of seasons and you'll get it. Not every woman is about finding peace and love regardless of the era they are born in, Eloise is a clear example of that: she's not just scared of childbirth or of losing herself to marriage, she wants (wanted) MORE. She wanted to achieve something beyond a lord's name and yet that's all she will get in this terribly-written show that gave us queer (Franchaela) but drew the line at different classes (Theloise). There is a stark contrast between the fiery, rebellious Eloise we met in the first couple of seasons and the trajectory they seem to be forcing her onto now: early Eloise wasn't rejecting the marriage mart simply because the men were boring or because she was afraid of childbirth, she was rejecting the system itself. Now, reducing her whole radical, systemic critique of society into a simple case of "waiting for a guy who allows her to read or kisses the floor she walks on" undermines the very foundation of her character (let's remember her scene with Violet in S2). There is a sort of fundamental tension with Eloise’s character on the show due to her being a feminist radical trapped inside a traditional romance franchise: the writers built an Eloise who demands a different kind of ending but ended up steering her toward the altar in the most boring of ways (could've done diff partner, setting, meeting). They built her on false promises, that's the tragedy of it. Philip is a very boring end for her and does not fit Eloise for a loong number of reasons. Even if he does give her everything she's ever dreamed of, it still comes packaged within the exact patriarchal institution she fiercely critiqued. They can try to modernize him for the screen to make him more intellectual/accommodating, it doesn't change that settling into quiet, rural domesticity feels like a massive regression for a woman who wanted to change the world and make a name for herself outside of a man's shadow.

Exactly! Like, I understand that it is a romance, but if the intention was to keep the same ending as the books, don't change Eloise so drastically, don't turn her into a character with dreams she can never conquer, don't make as see all her frustration toward the institution and the system just to then erase it all under the pretension of maturity. And same with Kate: I love her, but she's flat now, like the only thing that counts about her is her role of mother and viscountess. Violet too, was starting to take Eloise differently but then fumbled badly and returned to point 0 in season 3-4. Penelope from being one of the most interesting, complex characters became too nothing more than a mother and a wife. I understand that it is romance, but you can achieve romance and marriage without betraying or watering down WVERY character along the way. Seems like Jess only knows how to kill characters

genuinely crazy to think about how bridgerton wrote itself into a wall with eloise. you chose to change her character from the books, you chose to make her the independent anti-marriage feminist when you know the only way out of being a bridgerton main character is to succumb to big monogamy and you know you can't follow the book plot at all anymore. my suggestion is simply never give her a season, just let her be, show her thriving in the background and give her some non-romantic subplots every season. you would not making her the main character would make her fans angry but i think you would be saving her from a horrible fate

I look at Eloise in the show, so bold and full of dreams and ambitions, and so much potential. I think of TSPWL and I hear the Grim Reaper's stopwatch ticking. Writers, please, do right by her. Change her fate.
