writers:
break up your paragraphs. big paragraphs are scary, your readers will get scared
fuuuuck epithets. “the other man got up” “the taller woman sat down” “the blonde walked away” nahhh. call them by their names or rework the sentence. you can do so much better than this (exception: if the reader doesn’t know the character(s) you’re referring to yet, it’s a-okay to refer to them by an identifying trait)
blunette is not a thing
new speaker, new paragraph. please.
“said” is such a great word. use it. make sweet love to it. but don’t kill it
use “said” more than you use synonyms for it. that way the use of synonyms gets more exciting. getting a sudden description of how a character is saying something (screaming, mumbling, sighing) is more interesting that way.
if your summary says “I suck at summaries” or “story better than summary” you’re turning off the reader, my dude. your summary is supposed to be your hook. you gotta own it, just like you’re gonna own the story they’re about to read
follow long sentences w short ones and short ones w long ones. same goes for paragraphs
your writing is always better than you think it is. you just think it’s bad because the story’s always gonna be predicable to the one who’s writing it
i love u guys keep on trucking
Just gonna clear something up…
Lesbians not wanting to date a bisexual is okay.
HOWEVER, not wanting to date a bisexual for ONLY the fact that she’s bisexual, is biphobic.
I’m not saying that no one can say no to bisexuals. If you don’t like them for other reasons that’s perfectly okay. If you’re a lesbian and you’re dating a bisexual, that’s great and I hope you two are happy! Saying no is okay, saying yes is okay, but being biphobic isn’t.
(And if you’re bisexual and someone says no to you because of something other than biphobia, don’t be an asshole)
Bisexual men who have dated only women are still bisexual. You don’t need to have experience with someone just to know you’re attracted to them. Your lack of experience with other men does not diminish the very real experience you have with your sexuality.

I attended a seminar on Legal Issues and the LGBTI community and one HILARIOUS side effect of same sex marriage getting legalised was in reality…horrible for estate planning and property disputes, but also sounds like an incredible fic premise
Before same sex marriage was legal a fair few gay couples got married in foreign countries; it had no effect in Australia but it was the principle of the thing. When it became legal, their marriages took effect in Aussie too.
This was wonderful for couples who were still together, but for couples who had broken up, and hadn’t bothered to go back to that foreign country to get divorced (and they rarely did)…they suddenly found themselves married again.
Oh, it gets better than that!! There was a panel on a similar topic at Lavender Law a few years back. In the US specifically, we had that time period where there were just a few states that had legalized same-sex marriage, and then Obergefell happened and it’s legal everywhere! Yay! EXCEPT. A very similar problem cropped up.
See, people had gotten married in Massachusetts when it legalized same-sex marriage, but then they broke up with that person and didn’t get a divorce because it wasn’t really real, right? So they got together with someone else, maybe moved in between, and decided to get married when California legalized. And then they broke up. And didn’t get a divorce. Because it wasn’t really real; it’s only in that state, right? (And no, there isn’t a good country-wide system to check these things.) So then they got together with someone else, and hey, it’s legal to get married in New York, we’ll do that! …and then they broke up. (Sensing a pattern yet?)
But then. Obergefell. Your marriage is recognized in EVERY state! Yay! Except… you have three or four marriages, actually. Concurrently. Which is, y’know. Illegal. AND one or more of your spouses could now be also married to yet another person, or people, if they did the same thing. Who could then also… (you get the picture).
Apparently there were a NUMBER of VERY BUSY family lawyers and estate planners untangling the absolute mess people created by getting married in multiple states to different people during that period.
So basically: Someone PLEASE give me the ensemble cast who are all, somehow, simultaneously married to each other. It is my dream, okay. XD
In-Depth Character Development Questions
These are questions intended to dive deep into a character, how they develop and relate to the story, and how they change. A lot of this is based on the Michael Hauge 6-part story structure. Things like hair color and favorite color have their place, but this is intended to help you develop and plan out a character and their character arc.
If there are multiple answers to a primary question, repeat all secondary questions for each answer or situation that is relevant. Really think about each question and each major character, and try to go in order, not skipping questions, though if you have an idea before you get a question, write to down before you forget.
Never just answer yes or no. Always dive into specifics, always ask why, always ask how much they’re aware of.

Hey writers, We have a good amount in the inbox and I apologize for taking so long. For NaNoWriMo or planning in general, I made a list of in-depth character development questions, ones tailored especially for character development and their character being impacted over the course of the story. Hope you use and it helps!

An image of female anatomy has highlighted the far-reaching effects of treating the male of the species as the default
“When the male body is the default in biology classes, medical education and research, women get substandard care. And it goes deeper than that: defaulting to men in education is both a reflection and reinforcement of male defaults more generally. Men continue to dominate political, economic and public life more generally in part because their presence is normal and unquestioned. That’s not the case for women, who have to justify their entrance and see their presence questioned… This is the same reason we treat “women’s issues” like they are a special interest instead of the norm, and why questions like “should it be women or the government who controls a woman’s uterus?” are seriously debated in the political sphere – while no one debates a man’s right to choose Viagra. It may seem like a stretch to say that we haven’t seen milk ducts for the same reason we haven’t had a female president. But it does come down to the same root: when only one sex is the default, the other becomes, well, the other.

“I think for a while I was just avoiding conversations, in order to not be labelled in some way that I felt was limiting and not actually true to who I am. I really salute these young women who come out, but if I said I was gay that wouldn’t be true. I’ve loved some really incredible men and some really incredible women. There’s no coming out to do because I’ve always just followed my heart and I was lucky enough to have parents who didn’t impose any bigotry on me. So to come out would actually be an untruth because the men I’ve loved were very vivid, real, loving relationships. So I’m with this woman now who’s extraordinary and that’s what we’re doing.”
