I am sooo mad at House, MD. I truly hate being invested in canon ships, theyβre always written in ways that will wreck me at the end, whenever I actually care.
But this fuckery is just out of this world.
After six full seasonsΒ of will they/wonβt they build up and tension, House/Cuddy finallyΒ sails and itβ¦ only lasts for lessΒ than half a season? Not even a full season, much lessβ¦ for the rest of the show (which, at this point, is only one more season), which would be theβ¦ normalβ¦ course of action. Thatβs the formula. You draw the will they/wonβt they out, then they get together and stay together to the end. One of the few times I actually care about a canon ship and they break the formula.
And in such a dumb manner, at that. Thatβs what makes me so mad.
He relapses after she nearly diesΒ and she breaks up with him because sheβ¦ forgotβ¦ that heβs an addict? What? She literally said that. And itβs the dumbest thing Iβve ever heard.
That canΒ be a reason for a break-up, ifΒ the characters met and got together when the addict had already been long sober and the other character never actually had to deal with the ugly side of being an addict.
But Cuddyβs been there from the beginning. Before the beginning, even. Sheβs known House since before he became an addict, sheβs been there and seen why and how he became one and for the past six full seasons, we saw her deal with him as an addict, at his worst and his best and his phase of trying to get sober.
Yes, he was sober when the two got together, butΒ they literally got together when he was about to relapse. She caught him with the pills in his hand. From the moment their relationship started, she knewΒ how fragile his sobriety is. And from far before that, she knew that heβs an addict.
And when he actually does relapse, she⦠immediately dumps him.
And Iβm sorry, but itβs narrativly stupid, after all this build-up and after all we know these two characters have gone through, after everything Cuddy knows about House. It makes no sense for this character to act that way now.
Lisa Cuddy is one of two characters who absolutely know the depths of House. Her and Wilson have been there through all of this, put up with all of this. Sheβs put up with worse than this. And all of a sudden, she remembersΒ that heβs an addict?
Thatβs bullshit. The Cuddy who has seen House through everything, the Cuddy who got together with him while he was holding the pills two seconds from relapsing, that Cuddy would not have justβ¦ dropped him, when he relapses. Because she fundamentally knewΒ what she was getting into; thatβs why this was a six seasons build-up, becauseΒ she always had doubts.
And they were so goodΒ while they lasted.
This show really bothered to sober House up, made him get his act together, let those two be together and instead of using the relapse as a fragile point from which they, together, need to recover, decided that thatΒ should be the breaking point? Thatβs stupid and not satisfying to watch at all, because it truly does feel like it contradicts all this show had set up around Cuddy and the House/Cuddy dynamic so far.
And then he hits rock-bottom and he hits it hard and acts even worse than ever before because oh no we canβt have House be happy or recover, despite setting him up as happy and recovered, we gotta have him be the biggest asshole around and we need him miserable.
No, you donβt. EspeciallyΒ not so close to the end anywayβ¦
