the Federation itself as a concept is so funny because the founding members are
the Vulcans, who have been friends with humanity for years but don't seem to actually like them all that much, instead regarding them with a sort of perverse fascination usually reserved for virology labs
the Andorians, who were fighting the Vulcans for like a hundred years
the Tellarites, who don't like any of these people and whose cultural trait is arguing, and
humans, whom nobody knew existed until last century when they shot themselves into space on a heavily modified nuke, invented world peace and won a fight with the nearest imperial superpower
like imagine you're the Romulan Empire and these weird monkeys who've barely figured out interstellar travel show up on your doorstep in the equivalent of a shipping container with missiles strapped to it, kick your ass in front of everybody, and then start a friendship club with 3 of your neighbours who all hated each others' guts until like a year ago. now I understand why every Romulan on the show is so angry
Excellent summary of the origin of the United Federation of Planets. No notes.
One of my favorite running gags related to Lwaxana Troi is how she never knows how to use computer technology. She's always knocking confusedly on computer panels to get them to respond and clearing her throat nervously before addressing a computer and so on.
It's even funnier because of the other joke which is that Majel Barrett ALSO plays the computer, so it's just like:
Lwaxana (Majel Barrett): Ahem, excuse me, computer...? Computer (also Majel Barrett): Yes? Please state your inquiry.

itās genuinely so awesome how ds9 stops halfway through its oceans eleven themed holosuite episode to let sisko explain why heās uncomfortable roleplaying in an era that in reality he wouldnt have been accepted in. hard to imagine a show nowadays that would play this so straight.
even though he does eventually join in, and kasidy presents a different perspective, his opinion isnāt treated as invalid by the narrative or anything. itās perfectly understandable & in character for him to feel like he does, and also in character for him to put aside his feelings to support his friends. just great stuff

One thing I'm really appreciating about Sense8 on my second viewing is how normal it is about the different countries compared to most American media. It actually portrays Mexico as a civilized country with clean metropolitan cities and glamorous movie stars with no sepia filter in sight. This shouldn't be remarkable at all, but unfortunately, it is.
looooove when mulder and scully know the most random stuff. why the hell does mulder know what the 1939 world's fair logo looks like off the top of his head? why is scully authoring an article on diminished acetylcholine production in recidivist offenders? she knows facts about tick metabolism and protein sequences and the number of stigmatics in the world at one time. he will tell you the exact number of years ago a subspecies of wolf went extinct and then explain the symbolism of eyeballs in the old testament. it never gets old.
People talk about "In the Pale Moonlight" as an critical character-defining moment for Sisko, where he sacrificed his noble ethics to save the Alpha Quadrant, but I think the even the writers failed to notice what actually happened: Garak saved the Alpha Quadrant.
The whole thing was Garak's plan from the beginning. Garak's contacts. Garak's espionage. Garak's diplomacy. Garak's technology. Every step of the plot was executed by Garak, and he executed it perfectly. Sisko didn't make Garak do the dirty work--Garak made Sisko do the clean work. He couldn't have accomplished this plan without Federation authority and that's probably the only reason he offered to "help" Sisko instead of running off on his own, like the time he bombed his own shop or tried to wipe out the Founders.
Garak is written as the devious, scheming villain corrupting Sisko the entire time, which robs agency and responsibility from both of them. Sisko's character development and incredible monologue ring a bit hollow when he can easily blame Garak for the whole thing, and Garak doesn't get any recognition because he's a creepy snake person whose actor isn't billed first in the opening credits.
trying to contain my rage whenever i hear people skim over or completely ignore the fact that julians entire motivation and life and career choice is born from one single desperate wish.
to make his augmentations mean something. to make HIMSELF mean something. anything good. anything at all. anything. so it wasnt for nothing. so little jules didnt die for nothing. he will be good and kind and fearless and loyal and single minded in his pursuit of fixing everyone because he cannot fix himself. he cannot undo what happened to him. but by god, he will make it mean something.
the more i watch star trek tos, the more it becomes abundantly clear that the reason why modern trek doesnt get kirk at all is because they dont utilise mccoy nearly as much anymore
in modern trek, they always present the idea of logic vs emotion, with spock being logic and kirk being emotion, but thats not how tos has it. in tos, the logic vs emption debate is spock vs mccoy. kirk is supposed to be the mediator between the two, sometimes siding with one side over the other, sometimes finding a middle ground between the two. thats why hes the captain, hes able to see all angles and pick the best course
when you make kirk the emotional one, it completely breaks the format, because 9 time out of 10, it means kirk has to be correct. theres no more balance
mccoy is just as important to tos as spock is, and while i do understand why spock is as popular as he is, without mccoy, the show doesnt work. you need them both. kirk spock and mccoy are the three leads of the show, and removing one requires you to change the others, which is whats happened to kirk

Death Stranding may be the weirdest game I have ever played.
Detroit: Become Human was amazing! My only complaint was that it wasn't longer. It was an emotional roller coaster and now I'm extremely curious about that genre.
I'm only 5 hours into this game and it's already had me tear up multiple times. I've never played anything like it!
Sons of the Forest was outstanding. It was basically like two different games. It was a beautiful base building game set in an incredible mountain region, and a terrifying horror game when you explored the caves beneath the island. I'm going to miss exploring the island and uncovering the story. Green Hell was the only comparable game I can think of. I'm playing Detroit: Become Human next, but I'm really hoping I can find more games in the survival genre.
POV u got turned into a kid and the doctor is trying to keep you happy and in sickbay so it can be fixed
ENT: Phlox has given you the very important assignment of helping him care for his menagerie, and you grow quite fond of his pyrithian bat, almost completely unaware of the scans that are being performed as he synthesizes a cure.
TOS: Dr. McCoy irascibly declares that he's "a doctor, not a babysitter!" But as soon as the captain is gone he winks at you and says, "See, now I only have to say that to him 'cause he acts like a kid." Nurse Chapel turns out to be really good at word games (except for when Mr. Spock comes in, but you don't blame her because he scares you too.)
TNG: Wesley takes you on a playdate, Troi shares some ice cream with you and Data initiates several games to pass the time during his off-hours. It might be the most fun you've ever had. When you finally get back to sickbay, where Dr. Crusher tuts at the sugar crash - deftly administering the cure as though it didn't take her all day to find - you sleepily proclaim that you want to do it again.
DS9: You didnt know that Julian had a teddy bear. You also didn't know his team won the sector championships for raquetball, or that Chief O'Brien accientally got worshipped as a god, or about the time the senior officers got stuck in a game, or when Keiko found a plant that could change your color and Captain Sisko was purple for a whole week, or that Constable Odo lost ... zzzzzZZZ
VOY: The Doctor seems to be bemused by your crying, and not at all confident when he offers you a lollipop - an olive branch you only accept because he won't stop offering it. It tastes pretty good, you suppose, and his humming is nice. Neelix's soup is not as good or nice.
