What does The Hub look like?
Okay.
Lets remember 12 year old me who came up with this idea. Right?
She was thinking a huge building ... massive ... think Bruce Wayne , Iron Man and Scrooge McDuck level of money funded and built the hub...
Logically 31 yo me is aware thats not gonna happen and the idea needs to adapt but I still think of it in that same way... I see the building in three main sections.
Ground Floor - Immediate Needs
Food
Showers
Laundry
Lockers
Thrift store
Community pantry
Maybe even a small convenience store.
The goal is that if somebody wakes up and decides, "I want to start getting my life together" they don't need to spend all day crossing the city just to accomplish basic tasks.
Community Floors
Meeting rooms
Computer labs
Study Rooms
Resume assistance
Resource offices
Recovery meetings
Counseling
Community event spaces
Mail services
Childcare and tutoring programs
Basically the floors dedicated to helping people rebuild stability instead of just survive another day.
Housing Floors
The upper floors are housing...Not luxury apartments....Not giant units.
Just safe, clean, private spaces where somebody can shut a door and have a little bit of dignity and stability while they work on getting back on their feet. Think hotel room with Mini fridge and microwave maybe a hotplate...
And to answer a question I've already been asked:
No, the housing floors would not be open to the public. All housing areas would require resident access.
Residents would have key cards or fobs to access their housing areas.... with the upper most floors being secured further as they are for at-risk youth and women escaping abuse and family levels.
One thing I think I need to clarify before I go any further
The Hub is not just a homeless shelter.
At least not in my head.
The whole point of The Hub is that it is part of the surrounding community.
The food pantry isn't just for residents
The thrift store isn't just for residents
The community events aren't just for residents
The recovery meetings aren't just for residents.
The computer lab, resource center, and community spaces aren't just for residents.
The idea is that people from all walks of life use the same spaces.
A college student might come use the computers
A retiree might volunteer
A family might shop at the thrift store
A resident might attend an Veterans Support meeting
A teenager might come for tutoring
A single parent might use the childcare program
I think one of the biggest problems we have as a society is that we separate people into groups... which pushes people away from each other... and makes people feel singled out and unsupported without "their" people
The Hub is supposed to be part of the community it is supposed to build the community.
Im well aware this sounds like a fun little fantasy... a 12yo (maybe even younger tbh) came up with it... but maybe we can build off it and make something real from it.
