Hux sighed and rubbed his face. He was exhausted. The stims withdrawal, sharing a room, insects, and now storms. As if he wasn't uncomfortable enough, as if the universe decided that he would pay here and now for everything he did. He winced hearing another thunder somewhere near.
Just a few hours of sleep, was it too much to ask? Apparently so. Hux sniffed and suddenly realized that Dameron was sitting up on his bunk. Wonderful.
"Hey." Poe whispered, "Can't sleep?"
Hux slowly shook his head. Poe stood up, put on a shirt, and went to the small kitchen. When he was back, he sat down next to Hux and passed him a cup.
"Here." Hux stared at the cup. "It's spiced milk."
"Spiced?" Hux looked at him in horror. Poe chuckled.
"Not like that. Calm down. I mean with herbs and cooking spices and honey." Poe smiled. "Try it."
Hux would never admit it, but he would do almost everything when Dameron was smiling at him like that. He cleared his throat, looking down at his cup. Stupid thoughts. Shame crippling down his spine, Hux sighed and took a sip. It was warm and sweet and spicy at the same time. Unusual, but surprisingly... Comforting. Hux realized that Poe put a blanket on his shoulder.
"You can't sleep often, huh?"
"I suppose," he said quietly, "I am not used to uncontrolled environments... and storms."
"You don't like rain, then?"
"I don't mind rain." "Hux said, taking another sip." A thunder hit again, and Hux almost dropped his cup. Poe looked at him, eyes wide open.
"Woah hey. Hey..." Hux found himself in Dameron's arms. "You know we have lighting protection systems here. The same First Order has on planet side bases. I personally stole it." Poe grinned. Hux swallowed and nodded. "Although it's probably not really a difference for you, huh?"
"At least we won't catch on fire." Hux mumbled, and Poe chuckled quietly, wrapping him in the blanket. Hux suddenly forgot how to breathe; he focused on his milk. Oh, he will hate himself tomorrow. He will hate himself for this moment of weakness, for this pathetic, childish display of... Dameron's hand was in his hair, and Hux just melted, placing his head on the pilot's chest.
"Why are you doing this?"
"What?" Poe glanced down at him.
"This. You should hate me. Not... do whatever that is you are doing now."
"I don't hate you. But I think many people you knew did hate you. And well... I decided to show you what it's like when there's someone who cares." Hux stayed silent, looking at his cup. "Is it working?" Poe smiled, and Hux didn't answer; he just curled down closer to Dameron.
He will hate himself tomorrow, but now he just closed his eyes and slowly fell asleep on Dameron, clutching to the warm cup of milk.
