Tales of Chapters: St. Martin
Since we are little, Portuguese children are used to hearing about this Roman soldier, Martin, who encountered a poor shivering beggar. It was a cold and dark day and after laying eyes on the poor man, Martin decided to share his own cape with him. Martin grabbed his sword and tore his cape in half, giving one of the pieces to the beggar. As soon as he did so, the cold stopped and the weather cleared; it became a sunny and warm day!
In Portugal, we celebrate St. Martin’s Day by gathering together and eating toasted chestnuts typically with moscatell to drink.
However, the underlying subjects are also extremely important. This is probably one of the first stories we hear in our lifetime that includes a clear distinction between social classes. On the one hand, we have a powerful soldier who has access to money and items that enable him to have a good standard of living. On the other hand, we see a poor man that has to endure extreme conditions and suffers from social oppression.
Only when we are older do we start thinking about this “hidden” message... and it was then that I started noticing the discrepancy between people’s lives in our world. This new discovery made me the person I am today. In my opinion, due to my identity - white, male, Christian, able-bodied, etc. - I had never stopped to think about these issues. Since considering the new facts, discovered through the power of story, my vision of the world has been changed, making me pursue paths that I believe can help changing the way we live today. I hope that one day we can all live in peace, with access to equal rights and opportunities.

Tales of Chapters: Meet Polleke
Polleke is an eleven-year-old poet. She lives in Amsterdam with her mom, in a poor but very diverse neighborhood. She loves her dad, but he’s addicted to drugs and homeless. She has a best friend called Caro and a boyfriend called Mimoen, whose parents would rather have him marry a Moroccan girl. She also has a cow, which she has named after herself. Polleke is funny, curious and has a tendency to think too much. She speaks honestly and often hilariously about all the little things and big things that happen to her from age 11 to 13. There are five books, a movie, a TV series and a play about Polleke’s thoughts and poems.
I now know that you’re allowed to call someone a rotten potato. Most other things are racist. (Voor Altijd Samen, Amen by Guus Kuijer)
Most of the kids in Polleke’s class are the children of immigrants and refugees. Because of this, Polleke thinks a lot about race, and especially about what you’re not supposed to say when it comes to race and culture. For instance, when Mimoen breaks up with her, Polleke writes a very nasty note insulting his culture. Her teacher finds this note, makes all his students put away their work and immediately starts an anti-racism project.
From having Christian grandparents, a Muslim boyfriend and an atheist mom, Polleke also learns and writes a lot about different worldviews. She describes the traditions she notices in Mimoen’s family, and those in her friend Consuélo’s family, but she also asks her grandparents how to pray. When they explain to her that it’s just telling God about something difficult in your life or at school, and then saying amen, Polleke recites the multiples of seven. Amen.
The books also deal with addiction, homelessness, being poor, not being poor at all compared to other people, love and death.
Six reasons why Polleke is an Inspiration to us all:
When Consuélo, a young refugee from Mexico moves to Polleke’s neighborhood, she takes it upon herself to teach her Dutch.
She helps her dad fight his drug addiction.
She basically helps everybody all the time.
She buys new clothes to give to a homeless person.
She learns about racism in the first chapter, and keeps thinking about it and pointing out problematic stuff throughout the whole series.
Polleke is not brilliantly smart, or exceptionally brave, or stunningly beautiful. She’s just a normal kid, but an awesome one.

Tales of Chapters: Story About a Bird
Growing up, I wanted for nothing more than to be close to my grandmother. She is through and through Lebanese, and I was not the most up to date with the mother-tongue. The result was a lot of stilted conversation and endless hours playing card games to make up for the words that were painstakingly left unsaid.
Her attempts to rectify her granddaughter’s unfamiliarity with “the right words” was to string all of the important ones into some semblance of a story. And so, the aptly named “Story About a Bird” was born.
As far as narratives go, this one was not the most complex: A little bird flies to the window of a little girl’s room. The little girl sees that the bird is injured, and so goes to collect all of the food in the fridge to help nurse it back to health: za’atar and banadoura and jibneh and khyara. The bird eats the food, thanks the little girl, and flies away. The little girl is sad because she’s lost her new friend, but many days later, the bird comes back to thank the little girl once more, and to sing her a song. The little girl falls asleep, content.
There are few words less important than the words for different kinds of food in a Lebanese household, so my grandmother’s attempts to teach me the basic tenets of my culture were, in that sense, successful. Many years later, though I have not heard my grandmother recite that song for many years, I can still recite most of the story by memory. That in itself is what matters most - not the story itself, but the fact that nearly seventeen years later, the story persists.
Though simplistic, this tale taught me more than how to say bread and cheese in Lebanese. It taught me about the value of maintaining and preserving cultural heritage, and how that fight is an endless one in the regions of the Middle East. As a more-than-fully integrated Canadian, I’ve seen the influence of American-centric politics, ideologies, and histories in my education and my cultural landscape. I’d be the last to denounce the value of that influence; I've seen how it has shaped a community that embraces story. But it was my grandmother who taught me that the story itself isn’t enough: you must share the story the way you would share your table, one piece of bread at a time.

As members of Harry Potter Alliance Chapters, most of us grew up reading about the Boy Who Lived. But there are many people in our chapters community for whom Harry Potter was not the only defining story of their community. These are the stories we want to hear.
Ron Weasley had never heard of Cinderella, and Hermione had never heard of Babbity Rabbity and the Cackling Stump, so we know that not everyone has had the opportunity to learn about the stories that are culturally relevant to you. That’s why, for Accio Books 2015, we will be compiling our very own Tales of Chapters: a collection of culturally diverse stories that helped shape us as an international chapters community.
Here’s how it works. First, tell us your story. You can write it up, make a video, draw a picture, do an interpretive dance - you know the best way to share your tale better than anyone else. Second, tell us how this story taught you something about social justice. This step is important - we want to know how your story connects to the rest of the world, like how the Hunger Games taught us about economic inequality, how Cinderella taught Hermione the value of kindness and hard work, and how Babbity Rabbity taught Ron never to use a twig for a wand.
Finally, submit your story here or tag it #talesofchapters. Be sure to support other chapters by sharing and commenting on their stories!
Dumbledore left Hermione his Tales of Beedle and the Bard in the hopes that she would find it “entertaining and instructive.” We hope that our Tales of Chapters will do more of the same.
Thanks to those who came and volunteered at reStart today. We ran the imagine store where residents can spend “reStart bucks” that they earn for attending programming and support groups. It was great having the chance to interact with the residents and help them to choose what they wanted. Some wanted toothpaste and shampoo, one woman wanted jewelry to wear to church, and many wanted toys for children or grandchildren. The best part about the imagine store was that the books were all free!

ABOUT PEOPLE WHO CAME TO END SPEECHLESSNESS In portrait: Vera Beckers takes one step at a time - with the Harry Potter Alliance as well as on her way to become a speech therapist
Soest. Did the Prisoner of Azkaban or the Goblet of Fire make her a Harry Potter fan? - Vera Beckers smiles. Is that important? - Not really. What is important however, is what developed because of these stories that J. K. Rowling gave to our world.
Vera Beckers is one of millions of “victims” of the story about the growing young boy and what seems to be his hopeless fight against evil. Harry Potter’s and his friends’ journey to escape the dark magic have long ended. But its impact definitely hasn’t stopped. Trying to see Harry Potter as an idol, more than 264,000* fans from all over the world have come together to create the Harry Potter Alliance. Their aim is to make the world a better place - with some larger as well as some smaller campaigns. “Even if we can only have a small impact, we can definitely see that we can change something”, Vera Beckers says. She definitely isn’t what you would call a “hopeless dreamer”, but more of a “realistic enthusiast”.
The now 24-year-old is one of the many young people who never could wait for the German translation of the next book to be published and so started to read the English originals. This led to a different view on the English language than some of her former classmates had. For her, English comes naturally. This comes to a huge advantage, as Beckers is studying in a foreign country and has to both read and write some of her exams in English. The little Harry Potter fan has become a big one - she is a young lady who wants to give back to others. Vera Beckers studies at Hogeschool van Arnhem en Nijmwegen - HAN for short - to become a speech therapist.
She grew up close to lake Möhnesee, went to school at Conrad-von-Soest Gymnasium in Soest and got introduced to what will soon become her job when she was doing an internship in Bad Sassendorf. “I knew I’d choose a job which focused on human beings. That definitely is the case with a speech therapist. Language is beautiful and absolutely necessary to communicate. Human beings who lose their ability to speak are the perfect example for that. Patients who had strokes or are suffering from a brain tumor. Furthermore both stuttering and difficulties swallowing are problems patients have to deal with every day. To help them feels like a very useful thing to do for me.”
Another useful thing for Vera Beckers is to introduce children to language. One of the projects that she and her friend Miriam Michel organize in Germany is Accio Books. More than 53,000* books could be given to people worldwide because of this campaign. “Last year, we managed to get this campaign to Soest as well. Because of the amazing help of many residents, we were able to donate more than 450 books to Astrid Lindgren Schule [school]. And from what we’ve heard, the books are being read and loved every day.” This spring, there will be a similar campaign. From April 2nd to June 2nd, the Harry Potter Alliance asks to donate any material that would make access to education easier. This will be donated to a refugee home. The Harry Potter Alliance collects everything that can help in school - like pencils, exercise books, notepads and games to get children excited to learn as well. “If you want to participate, please leave your donations at the bookstore Rittersche Buchhandlung in Körbecke”, Vera Beckers says. She hopes to get a good result to get more children excited about learning the German language. “We need intelligent young people. And talking, reading, writing, drawing - and communicating what you want to tell is necessary to be successful in life.” That is easy to understand and can only lead to supporting the campaign - no matter how small the impact might be.
By the way - the author of the Harry Potter books loves the idea of The Harry Potter Alliance - because they represent the values of Dumbledore’s Army in real life.
HARRY POTTER ALLIANCE - FANS ARE BECOMING HEROES
Harry Potter is a book series that has an impact on many fans worldwide. One of the many things that developed from the fascination with Harry Potter is the Harry Potter Alliance. The idea originates from the United States of America. The first “wizard activists” came together to do good in Harry’s name in 2005. One of the many re-occuring themes in the books is charity after all. Harry, Ron and Hermione fight for a better world. They activate both themselves and others by forming Dumbledore’s Army - a group of students who come together to fight against Voldemort. The Harry Potter Alliance wants to represent Dumbledore’s Army in real life and inspire others to do good.
It only started in the mind of some fans, but has grown into something big since then. The Harry Potter Alliance encourages to do good both online and in local groups called chapters. The first success: In 2010, the Harry Potter Alliance was able to collect 123,000$ and send five airplanes with much needed supplies to Haiti. They even managed to convince Warner Bros. to only sell Harry Potter chocolate that is fair trade. Every year, Accio Books takes place. Books are collected and given to people who might have a hard time affording them otherwise. In Germany, Christmas presents are collected for a food bank in Leipzig as well and many other smaller projects are organized.
More information on the Harry Potter Alliance and how you can join in can be found at http://hpagermany.blogspot.de.
GEOCACHING WITH QUESTIONS ABOUT THE TRIWIZARD TOURNAMENT
At lake Möhnesee, the Harry Potter Alliance was introduced because of a geocaching route. Geocaching is a modern-day treasure hunt that uses GPS. The treasures, which are called caches, are supposed to show you beautiful new places or introduce you to a certain topic. The Harry Potter-route at lake Möhnesee does exactly that: There are nine stops with question about the Triwizard Tournament from the fourth Harry Potter book which will lead you to a finale treasure. The route has been discovered more than 200 times already. You are both able to enjoy the beautiful nature and talk about Harry Potter quizzes at the same time. And to everyone who is worried about damaging any nature: The route is build around the “usual circumstances” which means that the treasures are always placed only a few steps away from the paths through the forest.
written by Karin Drolshagen. translated by Miriam Michel. * Some of the numbers mentioned in the article are wrong. The number of HPA members mentioned is the number of people who have liked the HPA facebook page. There probably are more members than that. Also the HPA collected almost 200,000 books through Accio Books. The number mentioned is the number of books that was collected only last year.
