Hoyt tried to remain calm as he sat, waiting, in a large conference room. The large glass walls let in plenty of sunlight on this early spring day. Hoyt had received a letter and then a phone call from SNT Corp, requesting him to come into the office and meet with a man named Austin Cullen.
Hoyt was confused. This was the company who had given Hoyt his scholarship to UC Berkley. The twenty-four year old had tried to do some research on the company, in the past, but could never get much information on the people that ran it, or what they did.
The only information he knew was that the company was based in Raleigh, North Carolina and that they had learned of his engineering talents junior year of high school after a science fair which he had won. There, they offered him a scholarship to whatever school he wanted. The teenager didn’t think much of it, at the time.
Unfortunately, as some of Hoyt’s friends knew, he wasn’t able to complete his schooling at UC Berkley due to being expelled. This was part of the reason Hoyt felt a sense of nervousness as he waited. This company had invested so much money on him, and he only had a Bachelor’s to show for it; he had been working on his master’s when he was expelled.
Finally the tall, dark-haired man, dressed in a dark suit, entered the room. “Hello, Mr. Beaumont. Sorry to keep you waiting. Austin Cullen.” He extended his arm for Hoyt.
Hoyt stood and shook his arm with a brief smile. “Nice to meet you, Mr. Cullen.” His voice calm and clear, not letting his doubts from a second ago show.
Austin took a seat at the end of the table. “Do you know what we do here at SNT Corp?” He connected his hands by interlocking fingers.
Hoyt shook his head, for once not knowing the answer, but he had no time wallow about it. “I’ve tried to do some research, but I’m not exactly sure. No.”
The other man pulled out a small remote, flat and about the size of credit card. “SNT Corp makes electronic warfare its business.” An image appeared on a the wall across from Hoyt as the curtains began to hide the sunlight. “The company's defense program is focusing on military communications systems that meet the modern threat of hacking and network sabotage.”
Hoyt listened, taking everything in. He had an urge to start taking notes, but didn’t due to the fact he didn’t bring any note taking paper.
Austin continued, “We also design navigation, communications, and aviation electronics.” Another image appeared on the wall, as he paused, giving Hoyt a brief smile before continuing. “The U.S. Army is one of our top costumers.” The older man went on giving Hoyt information about the company, before finally stoping and stating simply. “We’d like to offer you a job, Mr. Beaumont.”
