Rembrandt, Master of Old Age
Celebrated for his masterful ability to captureΒ raw human emotions, Rembrandt (born July 15, 1606) was a prolific artist, especially when it came to portraits. Rembrandt preferred to use older figures as models for his drawings and paintings because of the deeper emotions that come with age. Of the works by Rembrandt at the Getty, almost half depict a figure of an old man.
A French scholar wrote about Rembrandt in 1909, βHe is there when we are old, when we look fixedly at the side of the night that comes.β
