A cool thing about getting older is...
you hear from your skeleton a lot more.
Full Grown
Iāve been training my whole life to be an old man.
I got my first pipe when I was six. It was my
grandfatherās, though he hardly ever used it;
it still smells like tobacco, but the only thing
I inhale are memories.
My dad gave me my first pocket knife at ten,
and I promptly fell to whittling, carving sticks
and birds and other things that my future self
will think to bestow upon children my age.
I started wearing cardigans in high school before
they were cool again, and now I think they may
not be, but Iām not exactly sure, and if that isnāt
a sign of getting old, I donāt know what is.
In my twenties, I began commenting on the weather
to anyone who cared to listenāstrangers, shoppers
in the checkout lineātalking about how in
the good old days, we had more snow.
Then I started giving directions. I could tell you
how to get just about anywhere, and this was
before google maps, so sometimes people
actually listened to me.
There are shirts in my closet over thirty years old
and I still think about wearing them, hoping that
if I wait long enough, they will come back into
fashion. The same goes for my jokes.
One day, I will be an old man, and I will be very
good at itāyears of training, dedication, wisdom,
a fully formed human beingāyet they will look
upon me as only half a man, because when
youāre old, thatās just the way it goes.
I have a friend who had a special birthday yesterday, sheās reachedĀ double figures by turning 77 Ā IāllĀ reach double figures myself next month when I turn 66 and this got me thinking. ThatāsĀ eleven years between us and yet, we both like many of the same things and think very much the same way.Ā
Strange what??
When I was 5 she would have been 16 and wouldnāt have wanted to hang around with me in her spare time. By the time I was 10 sheād have been celebrating her 21st and definitely wouldnāt have been interested in a ten year old child! As we get older the gap starts to close. Iām 20 sheās 31, Iām 30 sheās 41 then all of a sudden Iām 66 and sheās 77 and we could almost be the same age!Ā
One of lifeāsĀ conundrums!
So I've been tagged by so many people (over a span of multiple months.... š¬) @sunkissednaiad @savagecanibal3 @badassspacewitch @uncle-bingo @risingstarsandfallinglights @sinistyx-deactivated20200105 Im finally posting a new selfie after all of this time... lol

Yaāll rember when birthdays were days full of enjoyment and fun?Ā
Now they are just filled with regret and self doubt. - How amazing
Reflecting on whatās ahead...itās my birthday tomorrow. And the older I get the less I enjoy it. Because I donāt like the numbers climbing. However, after losing a parent so young to cancer, I know thatās the wrong way to look at a birthday. I should be thankful for the numbers climbing because that means Iām living. Iām alive. There is no reversal of the numbers. But they certainly can (and will) stop. So I need to appreciate the years adding up. I need to stop staring in the mirror and wondering if I look my age. I have to appreciate life for what it is. And there is so much to appreciate! Just today I was able to walk out my door and into the sunshine āļø and walk along the river with Murph. Then I came home and was able to FaceTime for hours with some of my lovely family who live far away. Life is not bad. Hopefully year 32 will be the best one yet ⨠#outhereontheprairie #32 #birthday #gettingolder (at North Dakota) https://www.instagram.com/p/B8nDMGeA9jY/?igshid=1l3zvyzeoqiux
