Letters for Lucy à lire
sharing a collection of letters written to Lucy Granados as part of an effort to sustain support and love for Lucy who was forcefully deported from Canada in April 2018.
despite a sustained campaign against Lucy's deportation that united many community organizations, artists and activists in Montreal and across Canada, the nine years of labour, community building and love that Lucy gave to MontrĂ©al and her community, were ignored by the Liberal government and Prime Minister Justin Trudeau. today Lucy is living in Guatemala within the context of a turbulent political situation and the systemic economic injustice that defines living conditions for working people across Guatemala.Â
following up from our community art fundraiser to support Lucy and our appeal to members of the community to write letters for Lucy, we are sharing these letters written by Montreal community members to express their support & solidarity with Lucy Granados.
view all physical letters written to Lucy on the Howl! page.
listen to a CKUT radio interview with community activist & artists Amanada Ruiz speaking on the Letters for Lucy project & the ongoing efforts to support Lucy.

Artists support Palestinian refugee Omar Ben Aliâs struggle for status in MontrĂ©al
Saturday, April 21st, 2018, Tiohtiå:ke (Montréal)
Omar Ben Ali is a Palestinian father, worker and community activist who has been living in Montréal for nearly a decade. Successive Canadian governments have failed to live up to their responsibilities to address the question of Omar's status and statelessness.
Arriving in Canada in 2008, from the Jenin region in the occupied West Bank, Omar applied for refugee status and was refused. At the time, the Canadian government demonstrated little consideration of the well-documented reality of the systemic violence faced by Palestinians in the Israeli occupied West Bank on a daily basis. A recent Human Rights Watch report notes :
âIsrael enforces severe and discriminatory restrictions on Palestiniansâ human rights, and it builds and supports unlawful settlements in the occupied West Bank. Its security forces appear to use excessive force against Palestinian demonstrators and suspected attackers, raising the spectre of extra-judicial killings. It has renewed the practice of punitive home demolitions.â
Despite this refusal, Canada has never fairly addressed Omarâs case- leaving him without status, but unable to return to Palestine. Instead, Omar has been living in stateless limbo for close to a decade.
Today, Omar is working hard in the city as a low-wage worker, unable to travel or visit his family in occupied Palestine and without the full rights of a permanent resident or a Canadian citizen. Given the governing Liberal Party of Canadaâs rhetoric of supporting the rights of refugees and the fact that Prime Minister Justin Trudeau literally campaigned in support of the rights of Syrian refugees in the last election, we point to the fact that today Trudeauâs policies are failing many refugees.

Artists against the deportation of Lucy Granados
Thursday, April 12th, 2018, Tiohtiå:ke (Montréal)
As artists living in this city we write to express our total support for Lucy Francineth Granados and call on the Canadian government to immediately cancel any plans to deport Lucy. #LetLucyStay !
This is an urgent case that needs immediate intervention from Canadaâs Public Safety Minister Ralph Goodale to halt her deportation and for Immigration Minister Ahmed Hussen to fulfill his legal duty to accept her application for permanent residence on humanitarian and compassionate grounds.
As artists and cultural workers living in MontrĂ©al we are pointing to the deep hypocrisy of the Liberal Canadian government, led by Prime Minister Justin Trudeau, who publicly has pronounced support for the rights of refugees and asylum seekers, but continues to normalize the systemic violence of the Canadian stateâs deportation machinery.
Today, we are also expressing our love for Lucy Francineth Granados, a mother of three, a community activist and a beautiful person who has lived in Montréal for nine years. If Lucy were deported, her children would immediately lose their sole source of financial support.
As artists who are engaged with this city, working to express the beauty, but also the struggle, of the world around us, we are writing to express deep admiration and love for Lucy.
After facing threats from criminal gangs in Guatemala, Lucy traveled alone through Mexico on the infamous La Bestia train to the US and later to Canada, her husband having been killed some years previously in an accident. Although Lucyâs refugee application was unjustly refused but she remained in Canada undocumented. Over the past 9 years Lucy has been active in community organizations such as the Non Status Womenâs Collective and the Temporary Agency Workers Union (ATTAP) at the Immigrant Workers Centre in CĂŽte-des-Neiges.
Last summer Lucy filed a humanitarian application for permanent residence in an attempt to regularize her status. In January, a CBSA officer informed her lawyer that Lucyâs file would not be studied unless she turned herself in to face deportation. However, Canadian immigration law says that the Minister must study all humanitarian applications inside Canada; the CBSA officer illegally misrepresented the situation. Neither Immigration nor CBSA have responded to her lawyerâs demand that the situation be clarified.
To date over 10,000 people have signed a petition in support of the undocumented Montrealer, and public letters have been launched at several universities with signatures from hundreds of academics and students.
As artists we are writing to express our support for Lucy and to express the urgent need to stop this deportation and to grant Lucy status.
