What a difference 57 years makes juxtaposition of Autobianchi A112 Runabout, 1969, by Bertone, and Bertone Runabout Targa, 2026. The Autobianchi Runabout was designed by Marcello Gandini, using a mid-mounted 54hp Fiat 128 engine and gearbox, taking inspiration from racing speedboats. The configuration made it a prototype for the Fiat X1/9 of 1972. Bertone has reprised the Runabout’s styling for a new limited-edition supercar that has been revealed in production form at the Retromobile Show in Paris. Production will be limited to 25 units, based on a Lotus platform, with the same mid-mounted 468hp Toyota-sourced 3.5-litre supercharged V6 as the Lotus Exige, and prices starting at €390,000 (around $460,000).

Alfa Romeo Carabo, 1968, by Bertone. Presented at the Paris Motor Show, styled by Marchello Gandini, one of the first wedge designs. The Carabo was based on an Alfa Romeo 33 Stradale chassis and 2.0 V8 drivetrain. It was never intended for production but was a direct stylistic ancestor of the Gandini-designed Lamborghini Countach

BMW 3.0 Si Coupé Specialé, 1975, by Frua. Pietro Frua had some success with German car-maker Glas in the 1960s and after BMW’s take over of Glas, Frua built a number of speculative BMW-based prototypes but none of them reached production. This designed was recycled in 1979 for the Amectran Exar-1 electric car prototype but that failed to enter production as well
