Its a post im writing mostly for myself only, though but i just really want to make it right. I dont feel like sharing anything anymore, so i will be leaving this account as archive for as long as i feel the desire to post something again. Its more because ive been feeling very insecure about my art and truthfully didnt see as much feedback as i really would have loved to. Too much has happened for the past two years that i no longer can bear, its been a long time coming and i guess im ready to accept this change.
I still hold DiaLuci very close to my heart and im not planning to stop drawing them or OM in general, just dont want to post and show it anymore, thats it.
Here you can check all my DiaLuci drawings/thoughts specifically, if youre interested. Me and my friend also worked on DiaLuci ship name and its very important to me, so it would be appreciated if you checked What is Fallen Crown as well, we put a lot of effort in it.
Im still planning to write for these two, though so here is my AO3 too.
My askbox is still open, you can still ask me anything.
!PLEASE DO NOT USE OR REPOST MY ARTS WITHOUT CREDIT!
Overall, thank you all for being with me in this journey, it was a lot of fun! <3

The nobles' voices echo throughout the room, and he responds to each one on autopilot. The darkness has deepened outside, signaling evening is approaching, and the floor sparkles, shimmering with the warm glow of candlelight. It would have felt different in the RAD. Not so grand and ornate, and he would have been allowed to hide in the shadows of the meeting room. It's surprising how the place he tries to escape from at least several times a day - to his shame, if he's being completely honest with himself - now seems more desirable than his own castle, his own home.
On the other hand, the RAD is his creation, which he would not allow anyone to desecrate, and currently in his home are people he wouldn't want to see for the next thousand years. In his wildest dreams, these aristocrats had long since abandoned their posts, but the reality is that they still strut around his fortress, as if they owe that place, and frankly, it's starting to irritate him.
Diavolo knows the hostility is mutual, but he still maintains a forced smile.
A/N - Hi there! I did mention that i would still want to write about these two and post it on my AO3. It so happened that I and my beloved wife Venus @lady-shadow-and-darknesss started a collab not a long ago before my leaving. It did help a lot to still feel motivated and inspired to do something. I want to publish this particular work not so much because I'm looking for feedback - because I know there is no point in hoping here - but mostly because it is our thing. <3
Posting this on Tumblr still causes me pretty much of mixed feelings though, but I try to distance myself from them as much as I can. I don't really have anything else to say, except that I still hold these two close to my heart, and I really want to see the fandom come alive again, and that one day this fandom will be more supportive and give those who truly need support a chance. Right now, I don't feel any connection to the fandom, and the situation with the game as a whole is very disappointing, although the recent teaser for the novella has really caused a stir.
ā Dialuci and their constant war with Toxicity claims
Preface : I will keep this as civilised and as unbiased as possible. But while I can see where the issues could arise in their dynamic, most arguments that people make don't even address the most glaring one, that I will take it upon myself to discuss.
Power Dynamic
Possibly the most obvious, up-in-your-face issue about their relationship. Diavolo is the single most powerful demon in the Devildom and has the authority of an acting ruler. In addition, since many demons are still wary and/or prejudiced towards fallen angels, acting in their favour as the monarch would directly compromise Lucifer and his brothers' safety. That is the first point.
Second, Lucifer has sworn his eternal loyalty to Diavolo from the moment he fell. Not only does this create a strain in the relationship considering that Lucifer seemingly lacks autonomy in this arrangement, he was also backed into it because his sister was actively dying and he needed to save her. That wasn't the time for negotiations, and Diavolo's actions here are grey at best.
Now that I've laid those arguments out, what are the counters? Well, for one, despite the incredibly questionable and arguably cruel circumstances of their agreement, Lucifer himself has stated multiple times that he does not regret his decision. You could argue, he means that he does not regret saving his sister, he's not addressing the deal with Diavolo. And I would agree with you. But besides that, again, Lucifer has stated multiple times that he respects Diavolo, shares his worldviews, and his support for Diavolo is not against his will. (Lesson 15-7)
In fact, in the manga, the way Lucifer words his stance almost seems to imply that he would've ended up with Diavolo regardless of the circumstances. Regardless of circumstances, he is content to be where he is. He is content with what Diavolo has given him. Lucifer, Avatar of Pride, approval that's harder than gain than possibly most of the other cast except Thirteen, openly admits that he's content with the position he has at the moment and he does not hold resentment towards Diavolo for those reasons. Not only that, even if you wanted to argue that it was a front whenever he answered those specific questions, Lucifer himself has said unprompted that "[He] hopes Diavolo will always continue to need him." (Lesson 26/second Ferris wheel ride 1). That is not the words of someone who is doing it by force or duty.
And to explain Diavolo's perspective, although I agree that what he did was very low towards someone in Lucifer's position, from his perspective as the acting ruler makes perfect sense. If Diavolo reincarnated Lilith without having an official favour in return from Lucifer, a fallen angel, it would cause a political ruckus. He would've been defying the direct order of the Celestial Realm and risking an inter-realm war with absolutely nothing to gain in return. He could've risked internal rebellion, an assassination, multiple civil wars etc. and he still did by choosing to do what he did.
But on paper, he had Lucifer's loyalty as what he received in return. Lucifer's previous status as a seraphim, which is acknowledged by Barbatos himself in the Fall, is so incredibly high and renowned that having him pledge loyalty to Diavolo would be seen as a satisfactory bargaining chip.
In addition, even though Diavolo forced Lucifer under his command, he was also immediately elevated to a publically acknowledged political position as Diavolo's right hand and later as the Student Council Vice-President. In IDO, Lucifer is considered important enough in Diavolo's command to be considered for an arranged marriage to a noble family. He is far from a servant and he is leagues away from being treated as one. Lucifer in NB says himself that Diavolo has done everything asked for himāwhich you could argue might not have been a lot from Lucifer, but with all the crisis they were experiencing after the Fall, I'm sure Lucifer had to ask Diavolo for assistance in settling in. And the way Lucifer phrases it is very telling in and of itself, as if it pains him to ask even more.
Another thing I would like to point out is, though Diavolo shows no visible signs of distress and even laughs when he offers Lucifer the agreement, in NB during the demon king trials, he seems genuinely regretful about what he had to do as he's made to relive the memory (lesson 14). His action of taking Lucifer in is one he struggles with the most as a ruler. That is very telling in and of itself.
Unrequited Claims and Lucifer's Stance on the Relationship
This is the one argument that I've possibly never understood, but I will try viewing it through this perspective. Yes, Lucifer does seem rather impartial and indifferent towards Diavolo's advances and can seem uninterested through a certain lens. But this is applicable to everything he does, i.e., his character as a whole. Lucifer's sin is Pride, he struggles to be openly affectionate and communicate well with possibly everyone around him. He forces us to rely on subtext to discern his true opinions because he rarely ever admits something on his own (his respect for Diavolo and his love for MC are the only two things he admits on his own, interesting parallel). This is where so much miscommunication and misinterpretion of his character arises from, he's very subtle about it.
His care is buried in the little actions that he does and little things that he says. He makes a single moment memorable. The incident with him asking Diavolo to get Mammon that car, for example. He shows the same to Diavolo as well, most people are just unwilling to look deeper into those moments because of their own personal opinions and biases. In one of Diavolo's birthday events, Lucifer brings him his birthflowers (impersonal enough), but he also plays him a song on the piano. That in itself is a very intimate gift because he's not relying on something materialistic but rather something he actively creates.
But it stretches deeper, the song is one that Diavolo had heard in a cafe when they were out together. Key word, heard. Lucifer did not know the name of the song, he only heard it by ear, and because Diavolo offhandedly told him he liked the melody, Lucifer either (A) went through the effort of finding the sheet music to play for him on his birthday (B) listened to the whole song, kept it in his memory, practiced it and then gifted it to Diavolo. Lucifer is not the type of character to do this for someone he doesn't care about, this is the way he shows that he cares.
This is one of the incidents but there are many occasions where Lucifer has tipped us off that he genuinely cares about Diavolo. Even the whole S3 Diavolo got lost fiasco aside, because that could be interpreted as him being worried that the Devildom would descend into chaos over the absence of a ruler, Lucifer shows an evident fondness for all the non-consumable objects Diavolo has gifted him. Yes, he has huffed and puffed at receiving many of them as well, but he's also visibly upset when he loses the clock that Diavolo gifted him (a clock, that he could easily replace mind you), if I remember correctly he punishes Mammon for destroying a tree that Diavolo gifted him, and most of these incidents seem to suggest that's because he assigns emotional value to those gifts rather than fear that Diavolo will reprimand him because Diavolo has zero history of doing such a thing.
Referencing lesson 26 once more, Lucifer is one of the only characters who instantly notices that Diavolo's behaviour is odd when he's keeping a secret. Lucifer does this to a lot of people, I admit, but always those he cares about.
When there is a timeloop in one of the lessons while they're having tea together (lesson 34-B), Diavolo suggests that he wouldn't mind staying in it if he got to have tea with Lucifer, and Lucifer says he feels relaxed sitting with Diavolo even in the midst of a crisis. Lucifer does tell Diavolo not to joke about being stuck in that moment for eternity, but I think that's more of a testament to the fact that he has many he cares about in contrast to Diavolo whose main priority is Lucifer, than the fact that he would hate such a situation. And he also laughs immediately after.
To deny these incidents and suggest that Lucifer is somehow lying would be to take autonomy away from his character. Yes, unreliable narrator is an existing trope and characters are very well capable of lying, but when a character shows a pattern of doing something they have to have an underlying motive for doing it. It clearly isn't fear because he curses Diavolo in IDO, but even that aside, Lucifer has refused Diavolo on multiple occasions. He says no to many things that Diavolo suggests, him saying yes to some of them doesn't mean he was forced, it means he was alright with/wanted to do it. I'm tired of people taking away Lucifer's autonomy as a character and speaking for him when he's made his opinions on Diavolo crystal clear.
To conclude this portion, I'd like to clarify that this isn't me saying that dialuci is romantic by nature. It's explicitly to show that Lucifer cares about Diavoloāthe issue of romanticism or platonicity is upto the viewer, and I completely understand why some people would choose to view it as platonic (from a diehard dialuci shipper).
How the Power Dynamic Affects Lucifer's Family
Now, the actual heavy portion. Diavolo's war with being a good leader vs supporting the brothers. One of the biggest strains on Diavolo and Lucifer's relationship is the fact that Diavolo will be forced to make the decision that is best for the Devildom, regardless of how it affects the brothers. Now, this isn't something that's always a problem, in fact Diavolo's desire for peace between the realms/races makes his decisions as a ruler favour the brothers most of the time. But when it does come to a head, it will be difficult.
The most glaring example of this is Lesson 16/Season 1 and the sentence for Belphie's 'treason'. Diavolo himself implies that he could see how being forced to choose between his loyalty to Diavolo and his family tore Lucifer apart insideāLucifer was so incredibly tense and wary about Belphie's potential punishment for verbally suggesting that he would kill humanity and Diavolo that he locked his brother away for months. Verbal. Belphie hadn't actually done anything, and Lucifer barely attempted to have a heart to heart with him instead of just saying that he couldn't let Belphie do anything. We don't even know how Diavolo would've reacted if Lucifer hadn't imprisoned Belphegor first, but in the end, he does put him in chains (and I'm pretty sure this was before MC's death, though the timeline narrative is confusing) and put Lucifer on. House arrest. Ridiculous punishment so I'm breaking character but whatever. Treason.
My point is, this is where Diavolo and Lucifer's relationship faces an obstacle, if one of Lucifer's brothers were a threat to the realms in any way, Diavolo as a ruler would lock them away. This is kind of an odd part of Devildom politics because while Diavolo has the authority to do something of this magnitude over what barely qualifies as verbal assault, in NB the House of Lords are introduced which actively prevents him from passing many other justified and important legislations, and in IDO he's not able to protect Lucifer from an arranged marriage.
I feel as though that's where most gripes about Diavolo's character come in, especially those who favour Belphie, because if he was able to put Belphie in prison like he did then he should have the authority to protect the brothers in other situations as well without having to ask for someone else's permission. But I see this more as a writing flaw/quality going down rather than a problem with Diavolo's character, and not to mention, possibly making his struggles more 'viable' as a character.
We never do see how Diavolo and Lucifer resolve the aftermath of Lesson 16 and all the problems with their relationship, because the game wraps it up with a small timeskip and says happy ending. Again, an issue with the game itself, because it does the same thing with Belphegor and MC's relationship despite Belphegor literally strangling them to death. Twice at that. They shoved a lot of plot into those few lessons and it was too little time for them to actually process any trauma and talk about it, this goes for all of the brothers, MC and by extension I suppose Diavolo.
But the final point is, if you're willing to accept the game screwing over many other points of development from A to B and are still able to like B, then critising dialuci over this lesson is also futile. The B point, as demonstrated by the latter three seasons of the OG game, is that they are friends who care about each other.
Another thing I'd like to point out is that people who criticize dialuci rarely touch the mess that is the Celestial War and how it affected the brothers' relationship with the angels. Simeon regrets his choice, but he still lives in the celestial realm and regained his powers. The realm that wanted to erase Lilith from existence, and then killed her over one (1) immortal human that was dying, and then cast the brothers out of Heaven to fend for themselves despite their many years of faithful service and trust in "father." And what do the devs do in NB after telling us this? Imply that the brothers are willing to let Simeon and Luke into their homes after all of that. So yes, either accept everything the game says, or call everything bullshit because it is. Choosing selectively is a clear indicator of bias.
In the end, we're all a part of the same community here and I think standing together would be more beautiful than whatever conflict is trending at the moment.
Bonus
Here are screenshots of the "Diavolo disappeared" fiasco because I personally believe it to be a prime indicator of Lucifer caring.
I remembered something out of the blue and so I'm going to add this as well : As I've already said, viewing them as platonic or romantic is entirely upto you, but using the argument that shippers "turn everything gay" by choosing to view them in their preferred light is blatant homophobia. Yes, two men can be friends without being gay, but the line between being platonic and romantic is very thin and canon has given the shippers ample content to interpret in a romantic and/or sexual light.
Diavolo has described Lucifer as attractive/desirable multiple times in canonācalling him beautiful, magnificent and awe-inspiring (season 1 OG), describing him to be "attractive" with "long, slender fingers and legs" (Shout Your Heart Out/Devilgram), implying he'd do anything to have Lucifer as his butler (butler event), wanting to record his voice etc.
Thank you to my friend @hotarlyyy for the "Shout your Heart Out" image! Truly a classic.

Bonus
Here are screenshots of the "Diavolo disappeared" fiasco because I personally believe it to be a prime indicator of Lucifer caring.
Serving the prince in itself isnāt difficult, he demands very little. There is no bowing, no kneeling, no force. No, he resents Diavolo for forcing him to live. To live long enough to see himself become a demon, long enough to see his brothers slip from their loving virtues and succumb to sin. He doesnāt even know if they love each other anymore, or if he forced them to; because he comes home to bloody fighting and murderous rampages. He takes a whip to each of their skins and learns to find their cries familiar. It stops making him sick, but it never becomes enjoyable. He is only ever angry.
His loss of self and newfound resentment puts an immense strain on their relationship, if it can still be called one. Lucifer distances himself as far as the nature of his work will allow, speaking when commanded and not a moment more. If he wants a slave, he can have one. One that follows his orders, but only when issued. His only demand was clear ā donāt touch my brothers. But Diavolo is free to do whatever he likes to Lucifer.
He never does.
He wants absolutely nothing to do with Diavolo and his brothers keep him plenty occupied. Whatever relationship they once had is now fractured beyond repair, and Lucifer is nothing if not bitter. He shuts down every attempt at communication and declines every offer, gift and compliment, snapping when he is pushed too far. For the most part, Diavolo seems to know his limits, but sometimes he pushes with intention. In these times, each sentence exchanged is the cross of a sword and Lucifer can see the exhilaration in Diavoloās eyes.
He loathes that itās the only thing that makes him feel alive again.
Despite his personal issues, Lucifer executes every task he is given flawlessly. He swore an oath and he intends to keep it, both by principle and for duty. It isnāt much of a surprise when his involvement with the princeās affairs fosters a respect for his cause. He can appreciate someoneās work from afar, despite their differences. Diavolo, miraculously, succeeds in establishing the exchange program with Lucifer by his side. His brothers adjust to their new lives and do not require help anymore, leaving him unoccupied and empty. But he cannot stand to be idle, it leaves room for unwanted thoughts and fears. And so he devotes most of his time to helping Diavolo; the forced proximity is preferable to the recurring nightmares.
The transition starts gradually, as all things do in their long lifetime. Eventually, Lucifer becomes tired of being angry. Especially since it seems to amuse Diavolo. He accepts his new reality. His jaw doesnāt clench everytime the prince asks him a question and he often fires right back with no underlying ire. Ironically, they start arguing more, but it doesnāt leave him nearly as fuming as their previous, ācordialā exchanges. He begins accepting Diavoloās invitations and they compete with words and looks to see who comes out on top. It varies more often than he likes.
This much, he expects. He has never had the intention of plotting Diavoloās demise for the rest of his life.
What he doesnāt expect is to grow fond. Despite their amply satisfactory relationship, Diavolo is greedy. He never ceases his attempts to win Lucifer over, and seems to double down on them. Lucifer doesnāt understand why he is so interested in a pawn he has already conquered, and the idea that he sees the fallen angel as a trophy to be collected makes him angry, so he tries not to dwell on it. He isnāt foolish enough to believe that the Demon Prince is capable of affection, but perhaps he maintains a front by treating his few close companions well. Acts warm and friendly to distract people from the underlying darkness. Diavolo is an excellent manipulator.
The worst part? Lucifer watches himself fall for it.
He craves the feeling of being needed and Diavolo is the perfect solution. He holds the future kingās kingdom together and everyone knows it, Diavolo especially.
The demon in him preens at the attention, it demands he sink his fangs into the princeās neck and tear him apart. Break his ribcage open and feast on his heart. And it goes absolutely feral when they dance a little too close to each other and he sees the same desire reflected back in gold. It doesnāt help that Diavolo remains the single most attractive person he has seen. He hates every second of it, dancing with the devil himself.
Diavolo, for his part, does everything in his power to make it harder for him. He is actively involved in every step to breaking Luciferās willpower down. He coaxes it, encourages it. He doesnāt even attempt to hide the seduction. He is a demon through and through and Lucifer wants to drag him in by the lapels and kiss him on his stupid fucking mouth until his lips bleed. But he doesnāt force Lucifer, he knows better than to. They have come beyond simple pleasure.
āYou fight so passionately.ā Diavolo remarks one day over a duel, pushing back his sweaty strands of hair. āIt almost feels like weāre-ā
He knocks the prince off balance with one well-aimed strike.
āSparring?ā Lucifer responds, smiling thinly. He cannot allow himself to think of it in any other manner. āYes. Yes, we are.ā
āIt reminds me of the Celestial War, you fought with such vigour.ā Diavolo says, and Lucifer frowns. Was he watching? āIām glad to see that your form has mostly remained the same.ā
āMostly?ā He repeats, idly examining the fact that Diavolo apparently knew of his fighting methods despite never having fought him before.
āItās become far more pleasing to the eye, of course.ā
Their swords clash and Lucifer glares, their faces inches away from each other and panting breaths intermingling. His eyes drop to Diavoloās lips of their own accord, darting back and forth between golden eyes and gloss.
āYouā¦areā¦infuriating.ā
Diavolo grins and tilts his head in challenge.
āAm I?ā He feigns, āIād love to hear all about it.ā
It takes every single ounce of his willpower to walk away that night.
But that isnāt even the worst of it. No, the worst of it is that time heals their fractured relationship; and soon Diavolo hugs him in greeting and kisses his knuckles and sleeps on his shoulder, and in none of it does Lucifer find an inkling of ill intent or ulterior motives. He knows because he learns to recognise Diavoloās ticks until they become part of his own; the crinkle of his eyes before he proposes the next ridiculous idea, the slight downturn of his lips when things arenāt going as planned, the subtle haze in his expression which indicates that he isnāt listening to a word Lucifer is saying.
They have tea everyday. They go out together and work together and duel each other. They begin sharing; rooms and clothes and beds and stories. Scars and battles and bleeding wounds. He doesnāt know how to even begin telling his brothers. They communicate through glances alone and nobody else understands. They weave a language only they can understand and if Diavolo decides to stop speaking it, a part of him will go unheard forever.
More time.
Fifty years.
A hundred.
The prince follows through on his plans for uniting the realms. The prospect doesnāt please Lucifer in the slightest, not when he tastes blood at the very thought of seeing Heaven again. He bites it back and nods, acutely aware of the contract that shackles his wrists and labels him a servant. Naturally, it drives a wedge between them. He hates Diavoloās invasive questioning and false concern, what used to look soft goes back to being mocking. His brothers take it the worst, levelling each other with helpless gazes when they realise there is no alternative. Some more than others.
āCOWARD!ā Belphegor screeches from the cracked floors, straining against the fierce blue glow of his magic. āHow could you do this to your own brother?!ā
āI cannot allow you to interfere with the humans.ā Lucifer states calmly, āFor both our sakes.ā
āYou mean for Diavoloās sake!ā Belphie spits, tail swinging wildly. āYou disgust me! I never thought youād have fallen so far, Lucifer, going against the very family you fought to protect for some cold blooded royal! What will you tell the others?! What will you tell Beel?ā
Lucifer takes a deep breath.
āYou will be executed.ā He bites, as harsh as the sentence he will be forced to witness if he doesnāt step in. āYou should know how the Devildomās courts work by now. There will be no mercy, Belphegor, this is treason. Iām not letting you out until youāve come to your senses.ā
I canāt lose you.
Belphie ignores him, hissing and clicking his jaw. The adrenaline is beginning to wear out and there is a wet sheen to his eyes, his struggle tapering out. Luciferās heart clenches, but heād take inflecting the pain over watching them die. It is his responsibility.
āI canāt believe youāre choosing him over us.ā His voice cracks, becoming increasingly more frenzied at Luciferās silence. āYou love him, is that it?! Has he claimed you for everything youāre worth?! Every thing you do, every word you say, for him! Are you incapable of thinking for yourself, Lucifer?ā
Lucifer drops the chains and locks the last enchantment in place.
āI hope you change your mind.ā
Belphegor seems enraged anew.
āYou will burn with him.ā
Lucifer starts feeling inclined to believe it.
Everything goes wrong. Because nothing has ever been easy. If their relationship was a fragile thread in a thunderstorm, Belphegorās imprisonment is the stress that breaks it. Lucifer feels fear unlike anything before in his life and it colours his every little action. He knows better than to believe that Heaven was more forgiving than Hell, their cruelty merely comes in different shades. It was only a matter of time before they became outcasts in another realm. Heās lost so much, and fought so hard, but ultimately he knows that there is no land where his siblings will be accepted. And despite everything he has with Diavolo, he knows that when it comes down to itā¦the choice is between him and the Devildom.
And Lucifer has never once been chosen.

Chapter 1
Pairing : Diavolo/Lucifer | Rating : Not Explicit | Word Count : 1.7k
It is nigh impossible to pinpoint where it happened.
Lucifer has lived for millennia; he has witnessed the rise and fall of countless cosmic dynasties and the stars themselves. He has watched the creation of every other angel and every other stumbling step of humanity, from the kin who now stand at his side to the souls that inhabit the Heavens. Has sunk his fingers into every land and drank from every spring and seen everything there is to know. He is intimately acquainted with the intricacies of the world, his first and true companion. The collision that shakes the realms and the evolution of demons do not faze him, the polarity is almost anticipated.
He does.
The meeting is laughably uneventful and his first thought upon catching golden eyes is āanother one?ā. Demon politics are a lot more chaotic than Heavenās, kings and queens falling as quickly as they emerge from burnt earth and brimstone. Assassinations, mysterious illnesses, rebellion. He doesnāt expect any more of the latest Prince of Sinners, not with his apparent pure-blooded nature. In fact, Lucifer speculates that he will fall even faster. Greed and violence never yielded a good leader.
Diavolo opens his mouth and destroys his world views in an instant. He challenges God and apologizes for being late in the same breath, converses with angels as if there isnāt a world of divide between them. He addresses Lucifer by name, a privilege that even his brothers werenāt granted (not that they cared), and at the end of it all he walks away with the entire Underworld in his grasp. Lucifer is too shook to be offended. Too curious to be appalled. It starts there, he knows, a whirlwind of internal conflict and a war that tears the Heavens apart, but even after all this time he cannot fathom the end. He doesnāt even know if there is one.
But one thing he is certain of ā they were destined to meet. The natural way it flows almost sickens him. It should be anything but, they are on opposing ends of the scale, polar extremities. Enemies. Distrust should breed discomfort, but he feels curiosity. He fantasises things he has never spared a second thought for. He learns what temptation feels like, something as innocuous as desiring more instead of accepting his creatorās divine will. Visions plague his sleep and he comes to the horrifying realisation that they are dreams.
Their diplomatic relations improve tremendously, for two lands so diametrically opposed. They go from war at sight to prickly ā albeit tolerant ā discussions. They seem to always miraculously include him, even when there are better things to do. Lucifer goes, in the name of duty. The forbidden line between their lands blurs until traversing it becomes part of his routine. Diavolo always finds an excuse to keep them longer; chess, tea, opera, conversation, it almost becomes second nature with the prince of Hell. He never forgets, never forgets the cold blooded demon lurking beneath the princeās smiling faƧade, the one that watches tortured souls with a sinful delight and feasts on suffering, but he finds it disturbing how easily it becomes forgettable.
He doesnāt take notice of it at first, but he commits the greatest sin an angel could against their creator. Slowly, but surelyā¦
He begins to doubt.
It is a slithering, ugly thing, masquerading as one more innocent question at the end of Fatherās words. Why? A faint whisper in the back of his mind, crushed by his loyalty before it even birthed a thought. He sweeps the filth from his subconscious meticulously, but it grows. It grows with each fledgling sentenced, each trial that seems unjust, each Rite of Passage with dozens of failed angels. He doesnāt mean to, he only thinks they could do better. He's only trying to help, with loose suggestions and long audiences. Which is why he doesnāt understand when he starts getting ignored. Excluded.
The creator of the realms may be busy, They may be carving the entire worldās fate in the palm of Their hand, but denying Their first child?
(Unheard of.)
ā¦He supposes there is a first for everything.
On the dawn of another failed audience, Lucifer begrudgingly accepts an invitation to the Devildom. He doesnāt realise ā or perhaps he didnāt care ā that he is the sole guest until he is standing alone in the dim lights of the Demon Lordās castle, for once entirely stranded with the ruler of hell and acutely aware of every hair that rises on the back of his neck. His butler is nowhere to be seen. They are matched in power, and Lucifer is decades older, but there is a shift. It doesnāt seem malicious, but really, which evil does? They all come as the highest form of beauty you can comprehend.
Diavolo holds his hand out and Lucifer takes it, if only to level the playing field. To remind himself that even Sin itself is tangible, he is staring into its eyes, and he could destroy it if he so pleased. The resulting electric tingle does the opposite of helping. He is led rather innocently into the Royal Gardens, with a deceptively soft grip and enthused smile. They arrive at nowhere in particular.
Lucifer stares.
He, quite frankly, cannot think of a better response. Diavolo gauges his reaction carefully, honey eyes glittering in anticipation. He thinks very carefully, considering their long history and intricate customs, and eventually decides to throw it out the window.
āWhat is this?ā He asks simply, though it sounds more confused than demanding.
Diavolo reaches an arm up into the leaves in place of a response, leathery wings fluttering and exposed muscles flexing to pluck a fruit out of the high hanging foliage. Lucifer stares a bit too long before diverting his attention to the object. It is blood red, outshone only by Diavoloās own lustrous hair, glistening alluringly in the pale moonlight. The prince holds it out in offering, tilting his head.
āYou told me you liked apples.ā
Lucifer takes a moment to remember. He had barely mentioned the detail in passing. Their fingers brush as Lucifer takes it for inspection, running his thumb over the ruby like fruit. It isnāt as golden or bright as the apples at home, but heā¦quite likes the shade. He thinks heāll choose it for Asmo to paint on his nails, since his brother is so adamant on that human custom.
āI wasnāt aware that they existed in the Devildom.ā He muses, quiet. As far as he was aware, apples only belonged to Heaven and Eden. So starkly different from one another.
Diavolo pauses. He seems to consider his next words very carefully.
āā¦Not naturally.ā
Oh.
Lucifer raises an eyebrow.
āYou had someone fetch it for you, I presume.ā He responds, idly. He doesnāt even think much about the words. But he likes being listened to for the sake of it, for once.
āHm? No.ā Diavolo denies, drawing Lucifer from his thoughts. āI found and planted it myself.ā
ā¦He canāt be serious.
The Rulers of the Realms have millions of responsibilities to attend to, as infinite as the stars themselves. While demons tend to indulge themselves in sin and leisure, they still uphold the unspoken rule. Rulers did not partake in activities they considered beneath them.
Apparently, this one didnāt consider gardening as one of those activities.
Lucifer casts a shrewd gaze around the garden, humming to himself. The other trees are meticulously trimmed, insect-free and pruned accordingly. The apple treeā¦it almost looked wild, despite being the least lethal variety here. But it lookedā¦free, branches swaying precariously in the howling night air.
āThis is the only one you cared for.ā He observes.
āIt is.ā Diavolo confirms.
Well, then that begs the question. A demon prince going out of his way to tend to a single tree isnāt a love for gardening, it is...a love forā¦
āWhy?ā
Diavolo seems confused. Lucifer can place its genuinity, so he waits.
āā¦You told me you liked apples.ā He repeats, and a beat passes before Luciferās eyes widen in recognition.
ā¦Oh.
An unfamiliar feeling blossoms in his chest.
Lucifer tosses it back to Diavolo and gives a simple excuse in return. Diavoloās eyes burn him where he stands and there is the slightest hint of a smile on his lips, but not in fury at being rejected. Thrill. Of courseā¦the privileged always love a chase.
Offering an angel the forbidden fruit, hm?
How veryā¦him.
Lucifer supposes it doesnāt really matter in the grand scheme of things, he bites into the metaphorical apple when the time comes, after all. It tastes like blood and bile and devastating loss.
The loss of his divinity comes with a myriad of complicated emotions. His soul shatters into a million tiny fragments and a part of him dies at the oath. The parts that survive grow fragile and mortal, aching with sorrow and craving for comfort. He is scarred, scarred beyond comprehension. All his life, dedicated and loyal at his creatorās side. Cast away the moment he dared to question.
His fist clenches.
His creation flinches and digs its claws deeper into his chest, into the flesh above a heart that beats too fast and too free. The manifestation of his wrath, his hatred, his imperfections and his insolence against the word of God. One that split the skies and shook the earth.
WRATH.
He stares down at it with a loathing tenfold, cradling it closer to his breast when it whimpers.
Adversary.
But are you talking to him or yourself?
He cries, perhaps for the first time in his life. He sobs and hiccups and wails, sounding more grotesque than a dying banshee. It is pathetic, unbefitting of an angel, but he isnāt one. Trembling fingers trace the stems at his backā he is a monster. A disfigured, disgraced monstrosity. And all for nothing, because the one he sought to protect died before his very eyes. He let her.
Of courseā¦of course the demon of his nightmares arrives with an offer he canāt refuse. His sister, reborn with the measly lifespan of a humanā¦but happy. Safe. Alive, and not dead by his own wretched hands. He could either let them both die, or both live. One with a new life, and the other as a slave.
Of course he takes it, and seals his fate in stone.
From the moment of her birth, the title has weighed great on her shoulders, and heavier still with the entire realm turned against her. One of the very first people to lose faith in Diavolo was her own creator. Bonds between the damned are difficult to decipher, but even so, she knows he never saw her as his child. There was a time when the only expression she knew was disappointment, regardless of the face. Needless to say, they didnāt believe a day would come where sheād take the throne. The Demon Queen trials were designed to cause her failure. Her father made certain of it.
And yet she stands here unscathed.
The flames of her sword quieten with the taste of blood, her ears still ringing with the final cry of a slain beast. Diavolo closes her eyes and swallows down the overwhelming scent of iron, phantoms of rot clinging to her bloodied skin. He had her slaughter a dragon. A maragni dragon. The creature whose blood flows through her veins, whose scales she bears and whose horns crown her head.
Diavolo is a demon. This is far from the cruelest thing sheās experienced.
And yetā¦
She takes a deep breath and steels her shoulders. This is her duty. The times sheās questioned her own capability are plenty, but she knows in her heart that there is no one else to bear this burden. And there never will be; not when her successor emerges nor when the endless flow of time ceases. This struggle is hers alone.
For the Devildom.
But hasnāt she already done enough?
The sight of the Mausoleum is concerning in and of itself, but even more so with its resounding emptiness. There is no one to greet her with applause, not a single cheer. Only the cold, utter silence of the ever-watching crypts. Diavolo clenches her sword tighter, breathing heavily from exertion. There are no trustworthy records of these tests, for it is unique to each rulerās circumstances. They begin at the Mausoleum, but end āwhere the heart longs for the most.ā
Diavolo has longed for many things, but none of them have ever had a place to call home.
And far be it from her to believe that the trials are over. No, that wouldāve been a bit too simple. And nothing ever comes easy.
āDiavolo.ā
The princess turns in an instant, heart skipping a beat at the familiar deep timbre. She knows the rhythm of the following footsteps painfully well. Featherlight, elegant and purposeful.
āā¦Lucifer.ā She returns, caution resurfacing. Things arenāt what they seem within the Mausoleumās maw.
And her dearest would be the perfect bait.
The dim candlelight gradually illuminates Luciferās features as she draws closer, crimson eyes flickering with something like approval. She puts a hand to her chest and bows, the mannerisms identical to her Lucifer. Despite herself, Diavolo relaxes in her presence.
āItās awfully quiet in here.ā Diavolo edges, careful. Some irrational part of her is pained at distrusting Lucifer.
āThe location of your return was unforeseen.ā Lucifer explains, straightening and striding closer. āThough I had faith youād be able to handle yourself no matter the situation, I stayed to ensure that noā¦unwelcome parties enter the Mausoleum.ā
That is a very Lucifer thing to do.
āI do hope you werenāt troubled much, then.ā She replies idly, giving Luciferās form a once-over by instinct. Flawless as always. The demon in question holds her head higher, eyes narrowing slyly.
āYou didnāt think anyone would truly dare, did you?ā
Diavolo chuckles lightly, tension fading from her shoulders. Luciferās lips quirk ever so slightly in response. Avatar of Pride indeed.
Itāsā¦nice.
Truthfully, it has been a while since they have talked beyond duty. With each passing day that leads to her coronation, she seems to lose another good part of her life. Her crown has been the only constant throughout the years; though she would rather have it be something else. Someone else.
How strange to think that a being with the three worlds at their fingertips would sacrifice everything for love.
āWhere are the other nobles?ā The princess diverts instead, chest stirring with an odd unrest. She cannot afford to let her guard down. āThey seemed to have a lot to say about me before this, Iād have assumed they wanted to see.ā
āStationed around the Capital at their respective posts.ā Lucifer answers, tone slipping into that distinct sense of formality that she knows well. It shouldnāt be surprising, butā¦Diavolo supposes she expected something less impersonal. Theyāve been at each otherās sides for a millennia now. āBarbatos and my sisters are managing the capital. The court has been quite lively in the weeks of your absence.ā
Diavolo frowns.
āWeeks?ā
It couldnāt have beenā
āYou did take a bit longer than expected.ā Lucifer hums in thought, before her gaze becomes vividly discerning. Diavoloās skin prickles. It shouldnāt have taken that long, she was mindful of the duration the entire time. āBut youāre alright now, are you not?ā
Diavolo blinks in surprise at the question, faltering slightly. Her well-being probably isnāt what Lucifer means, butā¦
She doesnāt remember the last time someone asked.
āIā¦ā She trails off, voice coming out softer than intended. āā¦am, yes.ā
āEnough of that, then.ā Lucifer dismisses, taking a single step closer.
A step too close.
Her mind is still blanketed in a dreamlike haze, dulling her senses to the point that she doesnāt notice until theyāre nearly chest to chest. The second Luciferās hand settles over hers, clarity returns at an overwhelming rate. The world comes into focus with razor sharp detail, each particle in the air attuned to her state of being. There is no grand epiphany, but the ancient power beneath her skin thrums in contentment. Diavolo takes a sharp breath, suddenly feeling disoriented. The realisation occurs to her in a single, surreal moment.
It is over.
āYou made it.ā Lucifer says, something dangerously close to warmth in her voice.
She did.
For centuries Diavoloās agonised over this moment ā trained until her limbs fell numb, until her strength gave out, until the only thing she could feel was the rush of blood in her ears and the raw power flowing through her veins. Her dreams fell prey to uncertainty, feeding off of the ever-present, festering doubts in her heart. In a time where belief was a currency that she wasnāt spared, the trials were her only opportunity to prove herself worthy of the throne. The only opportunity to prove that her existence wasnāt meaningless.
āArenāt you glad?ā
ā¦But what comes now?
She feels no sense of accomplishment, no gratification for all the time and pain that was taken from her. Sheās waited for so long for this moment to define her future, yet now that it is here, everything seems more uncertain than ever. More questions than answers, more fears than assurances. It brings her no closer to understanding what it means to be a ruler. It doesnāt bring her closer to understanding anything at all. There is only a cold well of emptiness where her epiphany shouldāve been.
Even with all the knowledge in the three worldsā¦
How does one begin to live when theyāve spent their entire life fighting to survive?
Perhaps her father was right after all. Perhaps she doesnāt have what it takes.
āItās certainly progress.ā Diavolo says finally, forcing a smile that doesnāt quite reach her eyes. āMy position in court has been officialised. We can pass the reformed laws under my jurisdictionāā
āYouāre dissatisfied.ā Lucifer interjects, sharp gaze piercing through her faƧade with ease. She doesnāt elaborate ā it isnāt necessary. Diavolo doesnāt know whether to laugh or sob. Of course Lucifer would notice. Though she may not seem it, sheās always been good at seeing right through to the princessās core. A trait that wouldāve been unnerving to anyone else, but only made her all the more perfect to Diavolo.
And after all her years of faithful service, her steadfast companionship, Lucifer deserves more than just half truths and omissions.
āI suppose it feelsā¦a little underwhelming.ā Diavolo confesses, staring at the hilt of her sword. She canāt quite bring herself to look Lucifer in the eyes; saying it aloud makes it seem frivolous. What sort of Queen seeks self-gratification over duty? āThough that is nothing of importance. Iām glad that this will no longer be a hindrance to my rule.ā
Thereās a long beat of silence where the fallen angel seems to wait for more, but Diavolo remains quiet. Talking any more will only give her away.
āYou should know better than to use those paltry deflections on me.ā Lucifer admonishes regardless, sighing. āIf it were truly nothing important, you wouldnāt be thinking about it at all.ā
Thatā¦is true. She should give up these pointless thoughts and focus on what truly matters. A Queenās wishes are always second to her realmās, and those as trivial as hers arenāt worthy of acknowledgement.
āYou arenāt mistakenā¦ā
āWhich means it is important to you.ā Lucifer determines instead, walking the complete opposite direction of her expectations. āAnd what is important to you, is important to me.ā
ā¦Oh.
āThat neednāt be true.ā Diavolo turns away, ignoring the warmth that spreads through her chest. Such touching words, but sheād never want it to come from compulsion. That would mean she failed as both a leader and a friend. āYou are your own person, with your own wishes and interests. Not mine. Your duty to me doesnāt take that away. Iād never ask that of you.ā
She almost forgets that their hands are intertwined until Lucifer squeezes hers slightly.
āAnd if you respect me as a person, youāll know that I choose to prioritise your interests.ā Lucifer states, tone gentle yet firm. Diavolo canāt find it in herself to oppose. āBecause you deserve to be happy. I want to see you happy.ā
ā¦Enough.
When Diavolo stepped foot into this maze of peril, she was prepared for infinite possibilities of challenge. Ruthlessness is the lifeblood of demons, she would be amiss to expect any less from the resting place of their rulers. But now, it feels as though her judgement was mistaken. In her pursuit of training against unfathomable cruelties, sheād forgotten the simplest one of all.
The act of showing someone their greatest desire, knowing they are never destined to have it.
āWe should leave.ā Diavolo averts, chest tightening. āThe court will want to hear our status.ā
Lucifer doesnāt move. Perhaps because the illusion around them would crumble the second they left its source.
āWhat do you want, Diavolo?ā
ā¦Nothing that I can have.
Diavolo stills at the cool press of lips against hers, gentle but firm. Her grip weakens from surprise, sword slipping from her grasp and clattering to the floor. For a moment, she forgets everything ā duty, restraint, consequences. Nothing else matters. Lucifer tucks a strand of hair behind her ear, the touch so devastatingly soft that she forgets to breathe. She holds Diavolo as if sheās something precious to her; something worth loving.
When they separate, Diavolo musters a pained smile. Her eyes burn terribly.
āI shouldāve known.ā She says. There is no anger in her voice, only a soft resignation. The impersonator tilts her head, seemingly curious.
āHavenāt you known all along?ā
Diavolo closes her eyes, breath wavering.
āI didnāt want to believe it.ā She whispers, like admitting a guilty secret. āBut there are some things that Iām simply not meant for. No matter how desperately I wish otherwise.ā
The entity hums, eyes calculating. Itās incredible how much of a difference the act makes, despite wearing the same skin. Diavolo would never mistake this for her Lucifer.
āThat knowledge will serve you well.ā It approves, before dropping its voice to that painfully familiar softness and caressing Diavoloās cheek. Despite herself, she leans into it. āBut thereās no harm in pretending, is there?ā
And maybe it is a test. Maybe she is meant to refuse. But when her body acts before her mind and sheās holding something thatās so terribly Lucifer in her arms, she canāt quite bring herself to care.
āThere areā¦so many things Iāve wanted to tell her.ā Diavolo breathes, fingers clenching in the fabric of Luciferās suit. āWould you mindā¦?ā
Diavolo has enough self awareness to know that sheās the only person in this entire realm thatād willingly give up ammunition to a potential foe. Sheās also too powerful to be bothered.
A moment passes in silence before she receives her answer.
āSpeak then, Queen of the forsaken.ā
From the moment she met Lucifer, Diavolo has known that some things were best left unsaid between them. That day, she wouldāve never imagined that one of those secrets would grow to such heaviness in her heart that it began suffocating her under the weight of it. There are a million things sheās never told Lucifer, a million words left unsaid ā all for a crown that she never asked for. She remembers each one in vivid detail, from the cadence they had in her mind to the expression on Luciferās content features. And now, even if it will make no difference, she has the opportunity to say them all.
Yet only one leaves her lips.
āI love you.ā Diavolo says softly, cradling Lucifer in her hold. āI love you soā¦so much.ā
Neither of them speak for a long while. The response is inconsequential, no word that isnāt Luciferās will matter to her on this subject. Eventually, the illusion in her arms disappears in a curl of smoke, dark wisps coiling around her instead in a pale imitation of an embrace. Diavolo doesnāt move.
āSuch dedication to an angel.ā The power muses into her ear, a chorus of different pitched voices. āDo you believe she shares those sentiments?ā
The princess straightens herself with a sigh.
āMy love for her isnāt dependent on reciprocation.ā Diavolo answers truthfully. Lucifer could loathe her and it would change nothing. āIāve long accepted that this is my burden to bear.ā
āA commendable trait.ā It acknowledges, though not with approval. āBut useless in a demon. Do not forget who you are, Diavolo. Whatever may be, she once walked among the Heavens.ā
āLucifer walks with me now.ā She says, unyielding. The fallen angel has done far more for the Devildom than most born demons. āNothing will ever change that.ā
āā¦Perhaps.ā The entity concedes. Diavolo senses a subtle shift in its power, edges sharpening like a predatorās teeth. The hairs on her neck stand. āBut it isnāt her loyalties we are worried about.ā
Diavolo tenses in realisation, taking a deep breath. Frustration is not an emotion sheās well acquainted with, but at the moment, it simmers hot and indignant beneath her skin. Sheās heard many insults over the years, countless words of vitriol and poison. None have ever managed to affect her in this way.
āI am, and always will be for the Devildom.ā She declares in no uncertain terms, tone wielding the full weight of her authority. Itād take painfully careful examination to find the traces of fragility in it. āI have sacrificed everything for this wretched throne. Your plentiful luxuries have done nothing to soothe that ache, and I will carry it with me until the end of time. Do not do me the injustice of suggesting disloyalty simply because you disagree with my choices. I live and breathe for this realm.ā
And I never wanted to.
āThen answer us this.ā It says, sinisterly curious. She feels like a prey being toyed with, fangs poking and prodding but never biting. āIf there came a time where youād have to choose between the Devildom and your belovedā¦which will you sacrifice?ā
The thought leaves her head as soon as it enters.
āIād never let such a situation come to be.ā She responds. āI am the Crown, not some guileless puppet to the strings of fate.ā
āEternity is not so forgiving.ā It warns, with the air of possessing knowledge that she doesnāt. Diavolo tamps down the unrest in her senses. āYou wouldnāt want to lose both when the time comes.ā
Diavolo clenches her hand into a fist, refusing to answer. If such a time truly comes, she has faith that her future self will choose the right path. She will not make fickle promises at the moment, not when the weight of the coronation threatens to drag her under. And certainly not to appease the bygone rulers of half her power and none of her heart ā She is the youngest of her kind yet undeniably the wisest, has weathered storms greater than their downfalls and become better for it
Their approval is nothing more than an outdated custom.
Her surroundings seem to sense the shift, disappearing in a mist of darkness. Diavolo braces herself for what is to come.
āYou have great potential, Queen Diavoloā¦do not waste it.ā
ā
The stars are quiet tonight.
Lucifer paces the length of the meadow in thought, an odd sense of restlessness creeping into her chest. The low sounds of nightlife are her sole company, wind drifting along the mountain peaks aimlessly. She halts at the edge of a cliff, breathing in the cool, crisp breeze. It does nothing to soothe her wandering mind ā the Maragni mountain ranges are meant to be warm. Yet another thing amiss.
The shrill draconic wail in the distance draws her away from rumination.
āDo you plan to shadow me all night?ā She remarks, turning to the empty air a few paces away. All is quiet for a few moments, before Barbatos materialises in a flash of jade and shadow. The air remains undisturbed.
āForgive me if itās unwelcome.ā She says, not sounding apologetic in the slightest. āThe young master is accustomed to wordless companionship.ā
āThe young master is not here.ā Lucifer reminds, words coming a touch too upset. It isnāt at the steward. āDo you take me for her stand-in?ā
Barbatos regards her calmly.
āIs that not what she wished for?ā
Lucifer allows herself a sigh, looking away. In terms of duty, it is true that she is meant to be Diavoloās second in command, but there are some roles she simply cannot fulfil. The princessās relationships may be few, but that doesnāt make them any less meaningful. Lucifer and Barbatos donāt have half the rapport.
āYou know what I meant.ā Lucifer says, eyes tracking the periodic flashes of wings and scales. For solitary creatures, they appear rather often in her vision. āIām not her.ā
She sees Barbatos nod in the corner of her eye, taking the place by her side. Itās an odd feeling. Lucifer has never quite considered herself in reference to the other demon, there was seldom anything concrete to take reference from. They differ neither in power nor in status, they are the sole confidants of Hellās greatest Queen, and yet they could be no more different from each other. Lucifer is one of the oldest beings in the realms, it is unnerving to live beside one of the three creatures that surpass her in age and know absolutely nothing about them. Tonight, however, is an exception.
She knows they share the same concern.
āYou arenāt.ā Barbatos agrees.
They stand together in silence, wind brushing over them like the gentle caress of a lover. Lucifer closes her eyes, lips pursing in frustration. Uncertainty claws at the edges of her mind, highlighted starkly against the one person who has no such weaknesses. Choosing the mountains was pure deduction on her part, none of them knew where Diavolo would turn up in the end. As with everything, sheād spoken of it with firm confidence, arranging for a brief camp where she believed Diavolo would emerge.
The last time she led something from belief, the universe shook for decades.
āPerhaps youād like to sit down for a bit.ā
It is worded more as a statement than a suggestion, foiling Luciferās plans to refuse politely.
āI would not.ā She answers simply. āMy sisters would benefit more from your concern. Iām worried theyāll find a way to set the mountain on fire.ā
āThe mountain that is the habitat of fire-breathing dragons?ā Barbatos smiles.
āThe dragons know their limits.ā Lucifer counters. āMy siblings do not.ā
āBut I disagree.ā
Lucifer raises an eyebrow.
āYou underestimate them.ā
Barbatos chuckles lightly, curling a hand to her chin. Her tone carries an undertone Lucifer interprets instantly.
āYour sisters are plenty capable of caring for themselves.ā She says. A fair statement, if only it carried a single meaning. āMoreover, when problems arise, they know how to confide in each other.ā
She levels Lucifer with a wordless look. It tells her everything she needs to know, and yet, Pride cannot resist the urge to confront.
āYou imply that I donāt?ā Lucifer presses.
āIām saying itād be in your best interests to have more trust in them.ā Barbatos corrects smoothly, with her all-knowing gaze that Lucifer has always despised. āDiavolo cannot be your sole confidant.ā
Lucifer blinks, momentarily stunned. It doesnāt escape her how similar the words are to her thoughts.
āā¦I never asked her to be.ā She replies, teeth grinding together. There is no instance of vulnerability that she has shared willingly.
āPrecisely.ā
Lucifer takes a breath, biting away any further words. Barbatos regards her for a moment before bowing; a courtesy, more than anything.
āI will take my leave.ā She says, gentler than expected. āDo take care, the both of you.ā
Lucifer barely has a moment to ponder the odd farewell before the other demon is gone. She sighs to herself, shoulders releasing a tension she barely noticed. She has no reason to worry. Diavoloās return isnāt anticipated for a while yet, and the Capital is in trusted hands. There is nothing to fret over. She has plenty of faith in Diavoloās capabilities.
it's 2am for me but all I can think about right now is that thing:
I haven't checked chapter 5 yet but anyway.
First, I do believe it actually was done to reduce side characters meaning in the story again, to give Lucifer "the freedom" and act independent to be more appealing to the reader. But as long as I'm allowed to look at it through the DiaLuci lenses, I will look at this through these lenses. As much as I dislike the IDO plot, I'm still too weak for potential DiaLuci crumbs.
Satan basically repeats the thing that Barbatos says on the main screen in NB. And as far as I'm aware, it's the first time when one of the brothers directly recognizes their connection and says it out loud (and is not using it as some joke). This phrase coming from Barbatos' lips is not so surprising, because we know that Barbatos tirelessly watches his young master and sees things from the perspective of his butler, and in general he is much more straightforward and honest with both us and Diavolo.
But Satan.
It hasn't been that long since he became first consul. To one degree or another, even before that, he and Diavolo had some kind of relationship, but now or then, I don't think they're that trusting. However, Satan chooses to phrase it in the way that isn't really professional, because he's still talking about the king himself. Not professional, yet straightforward. He could have used any other turn of speech, to simply say "His Highness hands are tied now", but no. Satan knows and acknowledges why exactly Diavolo cannot act or support Lucifer as much as he (Diavolo) would love to.
Because Lucifer is like family to him. It's that simple.
Yet again, it goes well with the things I've said earlier: it's Diavolo's internal conflict, when his desires and the reality he has to endure don't match. So much so that now even someone who is NOT Barbatos (or Lucifer himself, to be fair) sees his weakness. Despite the whole situation, Diavolo still WANTS to support Lucifer. To give him protection, to justify him. To save him.
But he can't. He is a king now. The interests of his kingdom have now reached a new level. He no longer can take such risk. He has to maintain neutral and "keep fairness" even if his the most trusted friend, his best friend or maybe a little something more, is in danger.
You know what's more funny?
In the first chapter, Lucifer distancing himself from Diavolo again. He doesn't talk to him or ask for help. He renounces his political position and puts the whole responsibility on Satan's shoulders (what actually makes Diavolo sad and depressed, but he still let Lucifer go, because he respects his desires and wants Lucifer to be happy).
But in the second chapter, Lucifer's first instinct when he's in big trouble is to try to call for Diavolo. He still seeks his protection. He still believes that Diavolo will help him and trust him no matter what.
That Diavolo would be on his side anyway, despite the fact that Lucifer himself had left Diavoloās side.
"Do you think Diavolo does?"
Lucifer was sure that Diavolo was on his side from the very beginning. He believed it was some kind of mistake because Diavolo doesn't think so low of him and trusts him implicitly.
He still hopes to talk to him even later. He's still sure that Diavolo believes him. That Diavolo would help. That he still has his support.
The support of his friend, whom he himself has abandoned.

Diavolo: *chuckles happily* Barbatos, could you grab the devil hoodie hanging on that rack?
Barbatos: *nod* This one?
Diavolo: Yes. Thank you.
Barbatos: *smiles, eyes crinkling fondly* It suits you very well, My Lord.
Diavolo: *expression turns sheepish* You think so? Iām not used to wearing this sort of casual clothing, so itās hard to tell...Ā
*knock, knock*
Diavolo: Come in.
*door opens*
Diavolo: *gasps in delight, smiling* Oh, Chise. You came. Iām sorry for calling you at such short notice.Ā What do you think of this hoodie? Itās a new item from Wersace.

ā
2. Wow! So much fashion in one room!
Diavolo:Ā Well, Iām to be the brand ambassador for Wersace.Ā They sent me these samples to wear for a photoshoot.
ā
Diavolo: *chuckles cheerfully* I daresay we have a few things that would suit you too. *grin widens with excitement* What do you think of this hair accessory with the mascot characters of Three-Legged Crow?
Barbatos: *nods with a quirk of a smile, chuckling as well* Everyone knows these characters from the chat stickers. Youāre familiar with them too, arenāt you?
Diavolo: *nods genially* Come over here. Iāll put it on for you.

Itās cute!
Diavolo: *grins cheerfully* It is, isnāt it?Ā If you like it, then itāll definitely be a successful design.Ā
ā
2. I love this character!
Diavolo: *nods enthusiastically* Me too.Ā I never thought Three-Legged Crow would do a collaboration with Wersace.Ā
ā
Diavolo:Ā Wersaceās theme for the upcoming seasonās collection is āFriendship with Humans.ā *smiles warmly* I actually invited you here today because I wanted to ask your opinion on a few things.
Barbatos: *dips head* Shall we take Chise along to the photoshoot, My Lord? *eyes crinkle happily with his smile* That way, you can chat during the intervals.
Iād love to go!
Diavolo: *gasps, grinning with happy sparkles* Of course, youāre most welcome.
ā
2. I have some free time now.
Diavolo: *gasps in excitement* In that case, Iād love to have you along.
ā
Diavolo:Ā Weāre going to do the photoshoot in the castle gazebo. The staff should already be waiting for us.Ā Shall we make our way over?
āāāāāāāā
DDSimeon:Ā Diavolo can pull off any look.
āāāāāāāā
*Demon Lordās Castle gazebo*Ā
*camera shutter*
Diavolo: *serious* Where should I be looking? This way?
*flash of white, camera shutter*
Diavolo: *smiles warmly* Understood. Like so?
*flash of white, camera shutter*
Diavolo: *hums thoughtfully, frowning in consideration* For this jacket, perhaps I should loosen the tie a little...Ā Ā
Barbatos: *steps closer with a chuckle, eyes soft* What do you think of Lord Diavolo as a model?
Heās so professional!
Barbatos: *chuckles low in his chest with approval, eyes crinkling proudly* You think so too? *inclines head, expression soft and fond* Lord Diavolo is a man of many talents, one of which is presenting himself in an appealing way.
ā
2. Iām surprised that he accepted a modelling job.
Barbatos: *dips head in acknowledgment, expression soft and fond* He told me that he was moved by Wersaceās theme for the coming season.
ā
Diavolo:Ā Next up are the Three-Legged Crow collaboration items.
*flash of white, camera shutter*
*flash of white, camera shutter*
Diavolo: *gasps, eyes widen in concern* Hm? Does the item stand out? ...*smiles awkwardly, humming with doubt* Shall I hold it like this?
*camera shutter*
Diavolo: *holds out hands, expression uncertain* No, perhaps I should move back a little?
*time skip*
Diavolo: *shoulders slump with his sigh, looking down at the ground with exhaustion* ...Phew. Time for a break.
Barbatos: *soft, kindly smile* You seemed to be struggling a little at the end there.
Diavolo: *grimaces sadly* Yes, I was. *sheepish, self-conscious* The collaboration items are so cute that Iām not really sure how to handle them...Ā What did you think, Chise?
āāāāāāāā
AsmoBaby:Ā Get the man some jewel...
āāāāāāāā
Diavolo: *shakes head, humming unhappily* The photoshoot for the Three-Legged Crow collaboration items isnāt going too well. *meets gaze with a beseeching pout* What are your thoughts, Chise?
How about a different place?
Diavolo: *smiles* Yes, a change of location might make a difference.
ā
2. You need to smile more.
Diavolo: *grins, childish happy sparkles* Like this?
Barbatos: *letās out a chuckle, fairly grinning*...Ā
Diavolo: *gasps in wide-eyed horror* ...Do I look so strange?
Barbatos: *shakes head, expression soft (I can SEE that little āquirkā at the corners of your lips still, Barbatos)* Not at all, My Lord.Ā
Diavolo: *unhappy slouch* No, I can tell. My smile looks stiff and unnatural, doesnāt it?
Barbatos: *straightens, getting hold of himself* ā¦Ahem. *smiles comfortingly* Perhaps moving to a different location would help?
ā
3. Your smile looks a bit unnatural.
Diavolo: *wilts sadly* I see... I do like cute things, you know... *shakes head, smiling self-consciously* However, itās difficult to smile naturally when holding something that so clearly doesnāt suit me.Ā
Barbatos: *kindly encouragement* I think it suits you very well, My Lord. *nods with a hum of thought* However, it does clash with the castleās atmosphere.
Diavolo: In that case, perhaps a change of location would help?
ā
*fade toĀ Devildom streets*
Diavolo: *smiles* All right. Letās take it from the top. *chuckles* I need to do my best to contribute to Wersace.Ā
*flash of white, camera shutter*
*flash of white, camera shutter*
Youāre smoking hot!
Diavolo: *bursts out laughing, grinning* Haha. Thank you, Chise. *meets gaze directly, happy sparkles* You flatter me.Ā
ā
2. You look great with those items!
Diavolo: *nods, humming happily* It seems that changing the location was the right thing to do.Ā
ā
Diavolo: Hm? *steps closer* *smiles self-consciously* Yes, this photo came out very well. *chuckles happily* My smile looks far more natural when Iām talking to you, Chise.Ā I know! Would you like to join the photoshoot?
No thanks.
Diavolo: *wilts, looking aside with a bit of puppy-pouting* I see. Thatās too bad. *pained smile* Then, please wait there for a bit.
ā
2. Iād love to!
Diavolo: *smiles* Then, please step up.
2. A)Ā We could drape our arms around each otherās shoulders?
Diavolo: *beams happily* An excellent idea. Come stand next to me.
Diavolo: *eyes widen in surprise* ...What is it, Chise? Are you blushing? *chuckles, smiling sheepishly* I rather enjoy seeing that expression on your face.
2. B)Ā How should I stand?Ā
Diavolo: *nods enthusiastically* Iād like you to hold this Blacjak doll.
ā
Diavolo: *relaxed, happy smile* I think we can get some good pictures like this.
*time skip*
*fade to Ristorante Six*
Diavolo: *relaxed smile* A toast...to a successful photoshoot!
Diavolo:Ā Iām quite satisfied with todayās photos. Wersaceās PR department seems happy as well.Ā
DIavolo: Oh, before the food arrives...Ā I still have the Three-Legged Crow collaboration items with me.Ā Youāre welcome to keep one. Which do you like more, the tie or the hair accessory?Ā
Diavolo: *nods seriously* Iād also like you to keep this as a memento of today. *dips head with a shy smile, not meeting eyes* Itās a Wersace designer ring.
I couldnāt possibly accept something so expensive!
Diavolo: *laughs with a reassuring shake of his head* Thereās no need to hold back. Please consider it a thank you for accompanying me today.
ā
2. Is that the one you just used in the photoshoot?
Diavolo: *dips head with a smile* Yes. I thought it would suit you, so I bought it.
ā
3. Itās lovely!
Diavolo: *expression soft, smiling* Hold out your hand.
Diavolo: *smile grows shy again* ...As I thought. It looks exquisite on you.
ā
Diavolo: *grins cheerfully* Thank you for a wonderful time today, Chise!
End.

Lucifer: By the way, Diavoloā¦
Lucifer: How was the Wersace photoshoot?
Diavolo: I think it went rather well.
Lucifer: Iām sorry that I couldnāt make it.
Diavolo: Donāt worry about it.
Diavolo: We had Chise helping us out.
Barbatos: The photos have already been published in magazines and on the internet. Theyāre quite popular.
Barbatos: Thanks to them, the products are practically flying off the shelves.
Barbatos: I just received a phone call from Wersace thanking us.
Diavolo: Iām glad to hear that.
Diavolo: Oh, I know! Luciferā¦
Diavolo: Since you couldnāt make the photoshoot, Iād like to give you something.
Lucifer: š¶?
(Note: The emoji sticker that Lucifer uses here is relevant. Itās the one that has all three characters featured across the D.D.D. stickers with a question mark above their tilted heads)
Diavolo: Yes. Thatās it.
Diavolo: From the left: Red Devil, Blackjack, and Nancy.
Diavolo: You see, Wersace and Three-Legged Crow made some collaboration items.
Diavolo: Weāve still got some of the character hair accessories left over, so Iād like you to have them.
Lucifer: No thank you.
Lucifer: I would look silly wearing something like that.

One day, he happens to see a couple embracing, one nestled in the otherās lap. The display moves something in him, and now itās all he can think about. Such an intimate, but practical show of affectionāhe sees opportunity in it.
Lately, heās been looking for ways to spend more time with you despite your busy schedules. If you let him, he could sit in your lap while you work, stay out of the way while giving encouraging words and soft kisses. He thinks itās a great idea, ignoring the very strong likelihood heāll just distract you with kisses the whole time.
Or, you could be the one to shower him in attention, locking your arms around his waist and cuddling him like a big, firm plush. Truly, the possibilities are endless, and all are wonderful. So what if heās the crowned prince? Becoming a lap demon sounds like fun.
The only problem is, Diavoloās an impressive demon, both in personality and physical body. He trusts you enough to be openly affectionate, so he doesnāt really hold himself back like he used to. He seeks you out right away to fulfill his wish. As usual, youāre working hard at your desk in your room. You welcome him in, as expected, and tell him to make himself comfortable.
Well, Diavolo would hate to disappoint you.
He comes up to the table side and squeezes himself in between. Before you can even ask, the prince sits on your lap, completely blocking your desk. The chair gives a loud warning squeak, and you feel your seat drop several inches. He tries to play it off like everything is normal, a rosy, content smile on his face.
Anything work related dissipates as your brain goes into overload. Your senses are captivated all at onceāHeās so close, and he radiates so much heat. You can count the auburn hairs on the nape of his neck, see the traces of sweat on his skin. Your nose is smushed against his broad back. He smells like oak wood and cinnamon, and you can even get a hint of his natural musk from the crook of his shoulder.
This is already perfection for Diavolo. He can feel your heart pounding so fast, and he thinks itās adorable. But as safe as he feels with you, heās still not used to doing as he pleases. When youāre quiet for too long, he toys with his hands and tries to glance back at you. āIs this⦠okay?ā
Somehow, you manage to find words after the barrage of stimuli. āUm⦠maybe turn a bit so I can see my desk?ā
Diavolo makes a sound of understanding, then shifts to sit horizontal, his long legs draped over yours. His chest is now dangerously close to your face. āLike this?ā
āAh⦠yeah. Thanksā¦ā
Ultimately, you carry on with your work, because what else are you supposed to do? Ask him to get up? His arms are already around your neck, and his chin is resting atop your head in a sweet nuzzle. Youād be a monster to interrupt something this unbelievably cute.
So, you might as well get comfortable.
