During breaks, while Gene eats a snack or goes outside, Naru sneaks into Martinās study and stares at the shelves filled with thick volumes. One day, Martin walks in to see his son sitting on the floor with a book open in his lap, frowning deeply.
āWhatās wrong, Oliver?ā
āI donāt know these words.ā
Martin looks over to see what heās reading.
āThatās quite a difficult book you have there. I imagine most boys your age would have trouble reading it. Would you like a dictionary?ā
āWhat is a ādictionaryā?ā
Martin just smiles and pulls one off a shelf. āItās a book that explains what words mean. If you ever come across one you donāt understand, you can look it up here.ā
He shows it to him and explains how to use it. A look of awe appears on the boyās face, as if a whole new world just opened up to him.
āIf you still have trouble understanding, donāt be afraid to ask. Never be afraid to ask.ā
The boy just blinks, as if that never even occurred to him. āā¦It wouldnāt bother you?ā
He thinks for a moment, then nods. āOkay.ā
