THE JUNIOR DEPUTY

the apostle stands in the orchards behind his home. the fruit is ripe for picking and many vegetables are ready to be picked. some baskets are already filled to the brim and paul cannot be anymore GRATEFUL for God blessing him with the ability to feed those his brothers have taken from and those that do wish ill upon his brothers. the footsteps do not alarm him for somehow he knows whom with which he’s in the presence of  .  

“  I do not know if you’re familiar  , deputy  ” he mentions before tilting his chin over his shoulder.  "  with the bible or much of its contents. but Roman’s 12:19 through 20 states  ’ Do not take revenge, my dear friends, but leave room for God’s wrath, for it is written: ‘  It is mine to avenge; I will repay,’ says the Lord. On the contrary: “  If your enemy is hungry, feed him, if he is thirsty, give him something to drink. In doing this, you will heap burning coals on his head  .  “ 

 he turns finally to hand over an apple to her  . a sign of goodwill and his intentions ahead  .   "  Do not be overcome by evil, but overcome evil with good.  ”

     “   i remember my father’s teachin’s to a point.   ”     she remarks before listening to his ...  sermon  ,  she’d call it.  it’s not that she wasn’t faithful  ,  but she never much relied on it to guide her.  there were times she’d look for the guidance of a greater power  ,  but for the sake of others or a sense of belonging.  however  ,  the horrid demonetization of faith within these lands tore her view to shreds.  no god would allow such behavior.  nor would they whisper to a man unhinged  ,  desperately yearning for power.

“    i don’t think kindness will get me very far in this place.   ”   words are cold  ,  spoken without a second thought.  fingers take the apple  &  her head bows in thanks before taking a bite.  she lets her thoughts recollect as she swallows  ,  “   not all men are peaceful  ,  paul  ,  you may be  ,  but not all men are peaceful.  he’s dealt me a hand i cannot help but t’be vengeful.  i don’t  ...  i don’t  WANT  to be  ,  but sometimes wrath is all you have left.   ”   absently a hand reaches towards clavicle to trace the jagged ‘r’ carved into the skin.

”Jesus… here I thought the deputy they’d sent in had some SENSE. Just another trigger happy bastard like the rest of the resistance.” Growled words, rising from her seat with the judge by her side. Pearly whites exposed with a snarl, black fur bristling along its shoulders, the hand resting along her spine doing little to settle her. Hand resting on the hilt of her knife, kicking up dirt as she approached Mara. Pulling her gun free to tap it to the temple of the deputy with a sneer, glowering down with blood splattered features. “I’m all ears, careful now, I’m not quite sure if my trigger finger is feeling the itch today.”
