Shanks raising ASL part 7
First - Previous - Next
One they get back to the Red force Shanks finds Benn waiting on the deck. Ace had passed out on the way back and was sleeping in Shanks arms. Benn looked the two over smirking at his captain. âFinally got through to the little fighter eh.â He whispered to his Captain. He knew how much the boys had come to mean to his captain, knew that they were part of the crew now. Part of their family. But he wasnât going to pass up the chance to tease Shanks over his grumpiest son.
Shanks looked down at the little boy he was carrying in his arms. âIn more ways than you can imagine.â He whispered back. Then he turned his attention back to Benn. âWhere-â
âWhere else.â Benn cut him off jerking his head towards the captainâs quarters. He knew exactly who his captain was asking after.
Shanks smiles at his first mate before making his way to his cabin, leaving Benn behind on watch. It was a bit of a juggle to get the door open and not let go of Ace but he managed. Once inside he was greeted by the sight of Mihawk sitting up on a chair next to the bed. In his bed lay Luffy and Sabo all tangled up in the blankets and each other. Mihawk turned to met his eye as he came in, nodding his head down to Ace in a silent question. âIs everything taken care of?â
âHeâll be okay for now.â Shanks reassured the unsaid worries. He walked over and gently laid Ace down next to Luffy. Watching as the three boys rearranged themselves subconsciously. Sabo throwing an arm over Luffy to grab hold of Ace, while Luffy snuggled into his returned brother. Ace turned to meet them. Wrapping himself around Luffy and fisting a hand into Saboâs shirt. âBut thereâs a lot I need to tell you.â
The two men talked quietly, carful not to wake the boys. Mihawk tried to remain impassive but even he was shocked by the reveal of Aceâs parents.
âHow can we protect them Mi? Luffy being Garpâs grandson was already going to take some maneuvering, but Ace? If this gets out the Marines will never leave him alone.â Shanks was sitting on the edge of the bed looking down at his boys, his hand gently running trough Aceâs hair. How could the world be so cruel? That Ace would be hunted down for no actions of his own.
âThen we never let them know.â Mihawk stated smoothly. âWe keep the circle small. Only those we trust completely will know. The problem will be once heâs out there on his own, will he keep it a secret?â Mihawk paused. Thinking over an idea. One he loathed but might protect his family.
âI donât want him to have to lie about who he is. Especially not from his Namaka. I donât want to make him feel ashamed of who he is, or that heâs worth less because of his parents.â Shanks turned to face his partner. âThey were good people Mi. My captain was a great man, Ace shouldnât have to hide.â
âBut he does.â Mihawk knew Shanks had a soft spot for his old Captain. His loyalty ran deep, and Shanks couldnât stand the lies the Marines had spread about his old crew. But sentiment wasnât going to keep Ace and his brother safe. It was fine to let the boy know the truth of his parents. On this boat he could be Gol D. Ace and know the man his father was. But the rest of the world couldnât know.
âTo the rest of the world he needs to be Portagas D. Ace adopted son of Red Hair Shanks. Nothing else. Even that last name would be a risk if so many of the Rodger pirates werenât already wiped out.â He saw the small flinch his lover gave at the reminder of his lost family members. Mihawk didnât want to hurt him, but for now they to be pragmatic. âWe hide him by tying him to you. Heâs just some kid you picked up in the East Blue. Nothing more.â
There was silence between them as they both thought over the future. Shanks turned his head to look back down at the boys.
âYou said me.â Shanks voice was soft, grabbing Mihawkâs attention.
âClarify.â He requested, he wasnât sure where Shanksâ head was at right now.
âYou said âwe hid him by tying him to meâ so I take it youâre not staying.â Shanks had always know that this would come to an end. But Mihawks extended stay with the crew in the East Blue. The time they had spent on Dawn Island with the boys. Seeing Mihawk with his boys, it had allowed Shanks to deceive himself into thinking that maybe this time Mihawk would stay.
He had offered a place on the crew to Mihawk many times, but he understood the call of the sea, the need for freedom. And it had never stopped him from loving Mihawk, as long as Mihawk returned to him, it would never stop him. But that didnât mean that it didnât hurt every time Mihawk left. It didnât mean he wanted Mihawk to leave.
Mihawk sighed. It was an old conversation. Shanks always gave him the option to stay but had long stopped out right asking for him to stay. He was always welcomed on the Red force but it was never home. When he was working his way to the top he had to be able to travel quickly. To hunt down his next opponent. To win his title. Now that he had it, challengers need to be able to find him. Constantly moving was counterproductive to that. Plus he would only hinder Shanksâs own goals. If people kept coming to challenge him, then Shanks and the crew, and now the boys, would be put in the cross fire. And thatâs not to mention the influx of marines that would hunt them if they were publicly together. No better to keep them separate.
But that doesnât mean he doesnât care. That he doesnât want to keep Shanks and the boys safe. That he doesnât love themâŠ.. Heâs going to take that stupid offer.
âNo. I wonât be.â Mihawk replied keeping a carful watch of his partners movement. How Shanksâs shoulders dropped just a bit and how he wasnât looking at him. âIn fact thereâs another offer Iâll be taking.â
Shanks whipped around to look at him. âAnd just who elseâs crew will you be joining?â This was a slap to the face. He thought Mihawk didnât join his crew because he didnât want a captain, but maybe he just didnât want him.
âIâm not joining any crew.â Mihawk dismissed the concern. He never wanted a captain but if he were to have one, heâd pick Shanks. His lover should have no doubts or worries over that. âThe Marines have made me an offer.â
âYou canât trust them.â Shanks felt his heart drop. It was his captain all over again. Mihawk would put his trust in the Marines and they would stab him in the back instantly. He couldnât do this again. He couldnât lose someone else he loved to the marines. âWhatever they promised you, whatever deal they offer is a lie. You canât trust them.â
âI know that.â Mihawk would be more irritated with Shanks if there wasnât a breathing reminder of everything Shanks lost sleeping on their bed right now. His lover had had a long stressful night already and he probably should have saved this conversation for another night. But oh well. âTheyâre creating a âWarlordâ system. A group of pirates who can operate however they please without interference from the marines. In exchange we have to help them deal with certain problems.â
He watched as several emotion flicker over Shanks face. âI donât like it. And I canât imagine you enjoying being under their thumb.â Shanks couldnât understand why Mihawk would even consider agreeing to this proposal.
âOh I wonât. I wasnât originally planning on taking up the offer. But I can refuse to help them. If they ever sent me after you or the boys I would refuse, or a least fake my efforts, depending on the situation.â Mihawk agreed with Shanks explaining his reasoning.
âWonât they come after you if you refuse them.â Shanks questioned his loverâs logic.
âOf course but Iâm not taking this position for my own safety.â Mihawk explained. Though his explanation left more questions than it answered for Shanks.
âThen why take it in the first place?â Shanks questioned. Starting to get frustrated. He did not want any of his loved ones near the Marines.
âCome now Shanks, youâre smarter than this.â Mihawk waited for his lover to put all the pieces together. He wasnât good at expressing emotions. He far preferred actions than words. Luckily Shanks always seemed to know his true intentions behind his actions. He had no doubt Shanks would understand him once he thought it over.
Shanks paused thinking things through. âIf you take this they wonât hunt you, and you can do what you pleaseâŠ.â
âMeaning they wonât be paying to close of attention to who Iâm around. They also are giving us the option of making our own home based on islands in the Grandline.â Mihawk expanded in the privileges given to him by the world government if he took up their offer.
âYou hate staying in one place for to long so whyâŠâ Shanks was still putting the pieces together.
âBecause it would give you a safe place for the boys.â Mihawk finally laid the last card on the table. âYouâre a big name Red Hair, but youâre no emperor yet.â Mihawk had no doubt that Shanks would reach that level. He was well on his way there. âBut until you make yourself and your crew untouchableâŠ.â
âThe marines could come after us and the boys.â Shanks finished looking between the sleeping children and his lover.
âSo if there was an island the marines couldnât touch where you and your crew could restock or stay out of sight.â Mihawk continues the thought his lover started.
Shanks bit his lip as he thought over his lovers plan. âThat would be helpful. But not at the cost of-â
âMy freedom?â Mihawk went right to the heart of the issue. âYouâre right if that was the only benefit it wouldnât be worth it. Which is why I wasnât going to take it. Until tonight.â Mihawk turned his attention from Shanks for the first time in this conversation. His eyes locking on Ace. âAfter all, if the world government ever learned about the existence of the pirate kingâs son who would they send after him? Marines or Pirates?â He locked his eyes back on Shanksâ wide ones. Understanding finally filling his loverâs gaze. âWouldnât it be nice to have a heads up on what they know?â
Shanks couldnât believe was Mihawk was offering. This was an advantage they wouldnât get again. But still. âI canât ask you to do this Mi.â
âYouâre not.â Mihawk cut him off firmly. âItâs my decision. Besides itâs not forever. Youâre close to being an emperor. You and the boys will be untouchable then. The government wonât send me after you. That gives me 7-8 years to build up trust with the fools. By then Ace and Sabo will probably set sail, and Iâll be in a position to make sure the government isnât giving Ace any attention he doesnât earn.â Mihawk smirked at the end. Sure that all three boys will create quite the stir when they leave the nest.
Shanks thought about it. He still hated the idea. The idea of Mihawk being so close to the government, the people who killed his captain, put him on edge. âI still donât like it.â
âI know.â The two made eye contact once more. Mihawk held out his hand and Shanks reached out to hold it. Mihawk used his grip to pull Shanks over to him, Shanks willingly followed moving from the bed to his lovers lap.
âCan it wait? Iâm close to being an emperor. Maybe that will be enough protection on its own?â Shanks knew it was a good plan but he just couldnât agree to it.
Mihawk sighed wrapping his arms around Shanks. âIt can wait for a little while longer. But Iâll have to answer soon. The offer wonât be there forever.â Mihawk already knew his choice. If it would give him an advantage at protecting those he cared for he could deal with being the Marines delivery boy. A few years were nothing in the grand scheme of things. But he would concede ïżŒtonight. Shanks wasnât ready to agree, heâs had a long and emotional night. They had time to talk about it again. Once the boys were more settled and Shanks had time to think over the offer. He was a brilliant strategist after all. Mihawk had no doubts he would come to the same conclusion Mihawk had.
But for now he held his lover close as they watched over their sleeping boys.
They had time.
Or the did until a bandit decided to show up at Party bar the next morning.
This kinda got away from me. Iâve always been fascinated over why Mihawk decided to become a Warlord. So here are some of his thoughts behind it in this Au.

The battlefield was unrecognizable. The ice had melted into rivers of steaming water, chunks of icebergs floating like corpses in the tide. Smoke hung thick, blocking out the sun, but the war was over.
Whitebeard stood tall, battered but unbroken, his chest heaving, his massive naginata buried into the ruined ground for balance. The old man had taken wounds that would kill anyone else a hundred times over, yet his grin split his face wide.

Prologue, Chapter I, Chapter II, Chapter III, Chapter IV, Epilogue
A Bridgerton Fanfiction Footman John x Bridgerton OC Set before season 4
Summary: Beatrice and John relationship deepen into something far more intimate than anything she has known in society. Meanwhile, the appearance of another gentleman and Benedictâs pointed words force Beatrice to confront the reality of love and sacrifice.
Chapter III â Midnight Beneath the Wisteria
The wisteria tree behind Bridgerton House had always been beautiful.
In spring the blossoms fell in soft cascades of lavender and pale violet, draping the wooden archway like silk ribbons caught in the breeze. During the day it was merely another pleasant feature of the garden. Ladies sometimes paused beneath it while strolling the path, remarking politely on the scent before returning to the house for tea.
But at midnight it became something entirely different.
At midnight the garden grew quiet in a way daylight never allowed. The sounds of carriage wheels and polite laughter faded, replaced by the small rustle of leaves and the faint hum of night insects hidden among the hedges. Moonlight filtered through the vines and scattered silver across the path.
At midnight the wisteria belonged to them.
Beatrice had begun slipping from the house just after the clocks struck twelve.
The household slept then. The maids had long since retired to their narrow rooms in the servantsâ wing. The footmen finished their duties and vanished into the quiet corners of the house. Even Anthonyâs relentless vigilance over the household eventually surrendered to the late hour.
The first night after the confession, her heart had beaten so loudly she was certain someone would hear it echoing through the corridor.
She had stood outside the garden doors for several minutes, debating whether she had lost her senses entirely.
A Bridgerton daughter creeping into the garden at midnight to meet a man.
Not merely a man.
A servant.
Her hand had trembled slightly when she opened the door.
The cool night air brushed her face as she stepped outside, the scent of wisteria drifting through the quiet garden. She had half expected the path to be empty.
Perhaps he had reconsidered.
Perhaps the moment beneath the willow tree had been foolishness.
Perhaps he had decided the entire thing improper.
But when she stepped beneath the arch of vines, he was already there.
He stood with his back to the house, gazing up at the blossoms above. Without the powdered wig and formal livery he wore during the day, he looked younger somehow. Less guarded. The rigid posture of a servant in the presence of nobility had softened into something more natural.
Just John.
When he turned and saw her, a small change passed across his face, something warm and almost relieved.
âMiss Bridgerton,â he said quietly.
She stepped closer, unable to stop the smile that tugged at her mouth.
âYou know,â she said gently, âif we are to continue meeting like conspirators in the middle of the night⊠you may call me Beatrice.â
He hesitated.
The pause was brief, but she could see the conflict behind it. Habit and propriety battling something softer.
Finally he nodded. âBeatrice.â
The sound of her name in his voice felt different from when gentlemen spoke it during society gatherings. It lacked the polished charm they used so effortlessly.
It sounded real.
âGood evening, John.â
For a moment they simply stood there, the quiet of the garden settling comfortably around them.
Then, almost without thinking, she reached out and slipped her hand into his. The contact startled them both.
His hand was warm, far warmer than the night air. The skin was rough in places, the calluses unmistakable evidence of work done with tools and effort rather than idle leisure.
It was not the smooth, perfumed hand of a gentleman accustomed to dancing and writing letters.
It was solid.
Real.
And strangely comforting.
He looked down at their joined hands as though unsure whether he ought to withdraw. Instead, his fingers closed gently around hers. The simple gesture sent a small flutter through her chest.
Beatrice had danced with dozens of gentlemen across three London seasons. They had spun her across ballroom floors, guided her through elaborate steps, even held her waist during certain country dances.
None of those moments had felt as intimate as this.
Standing quietly in the moonlight.
Holding Johnâs hand.
A Quiet Flame
Prologue, Chapter I, Chapter II, Chapter III, Chapter IV, Epilogue
A Bridgerton Fanfiction Footman John x Bridgerton OC Takes place in season 2
Chapter II â Beneath the Wisteria Tree
By the time the next season of the ton arrived, Miss Beatrice Bridgerton had changed.
Not dramatically.
The change was quieter than that.
It lived in the way she laughed more easily now, the way she no longer stood so stiffly at the edges of ballrooms observing the world like a scholar studying an unfamiliar culture.
She still observed people. That part of her nature would never disappear. But now, sometimes, she enjoyer joining the dance of society rather than merely watching it.
Her sister would occasionally glance at her across crowded drawing rooms and smile with subtle satisfaction. Daphneâs advice, perform until you are ready, had taken root. Beatrice had learned how to glide through polite conversation. She had learned when to smile, when to laugh, when to appear intrigued by subjects that did not interest her at all.
It was not deception exactly. More like wearing gloves. Society required a certain polish, and she had finally learned how to apply it.
But there was another reason the change had occurred.
Every few evenings, when the house had settled into nighttime calm, Beatrice slipped into the garden where the wisteria tree stood beside the winding stone path.
And more often than not, John would be there. Their conversations had become a sort of ritual.
Sometimes they spoke of books Benedict had recommended. Sometimes of Daphneâs married life. Sometimes of utterly strange topics that John seemed to produce at random, bees remained a favorite.
It was a friendship neither of them had expected. And yet it had become the most constant thing in both their lives.
If this is not the MOST ROMATIC LINE IâVE EVER READ I DONT KNOW WHAT IS
âIf the stars themselves descended to ask what I desire mostâŠâ His voice lowered. ââŠI believe my answer would be sitting beside me already.â
SO CUTE AHHHHHH

Title the midwife and the footman part5
Parring footman John x midwife!reader
Summary: Called to London to care for Sophie Bridgerton, you expect difficult days and long nights not a dangerously charming footman determined to win your approval.
part 1/part 2/part 3/ part 4/ part 5
An. Im so glad that you like my writing! Thank u soo much i really appreciate that! Enjoy
Evenings in the servantsâ hall were usually simple.
After a long day of work the staff gathered around the large wooden table, grateful for a short moment of rest before the next round of duties began. Boots were kicked off beneath chairs, sleeves were rolled up, and tired laughter slowly filled the room.
Tonight felt no different.
You sat among them with a warm cup of tea between your hands, listening as one of the younger footmen attempted to recount a story that had clearly grown more dramatic with each retelling.
âI swear to you,â he insisted, leaning forward across the table with theatrical seriousness, âthe gentleman refused to move until someone polished his shoes again.â
One of the maids burst out laughing.
âThey had already been polished twice!â
âExactly,â he said triumphantly. âWhich is why I believe he simply enjoyed watching people run about for his amusement.â
Another maid shook her head.
âSome gentlemen have far too much time.â
A ripple of agreement moved around the table.
You smiled faintly, taking a sip of your tea.
Across from you, John sat with one elbow resting on the table, watching the conversation unfold with quiet amusement. His eyes moved between the speakers, though every now and then they drifted toward you for a brief moment.
You had begun noticing that more often lately.
It was subtle.
But it happened.
And every time it did, something small and warm stirred somewhere deep in your chest.
You pushed the thought away and focused on the conversation.
Someone else began telling a story about a guest who had accidentally locked himself in the library earlier that afternoon.
âYou should have seen his face when we finally opened the door,â the maid said between giggles.
âWas he angry?â someone asked.
âOh terribly. But mostly embarrassed.â
The room erupted into laughter again.
These moments were rare.
Moments when the staff could sit together without rushing off to their next task. Moments where hierarchy softened slightly and everyone simply became tired people enjoying a well-earned break.
You had grown fond of these evenings.
Even if you were technically not part of the household staff, they had welcomed you easily enough.
And you had grown especially comfortable sitting among them.
Especially when...
The door opened.
The sound was soft.
But it was enough.
The room fell quiet almost instantly.
Mrs. Wilson stood in the doorway.
Her posture was as perfectly composed as always, hands folded neatly in front of her.
Everyone straightened slightly.
She stepped inside the room.
âI have an announcement.â
Several curious glances moved around the table.
Mrs. Wilson continued calmly.
âThis evening you are all relieved of your duties.â
For a moment no one reacted.
The words seemed too unexpected to process.
One of the maids blinked.
âRelieved⊠for the evening?â
âYes.â
The silence lasted only another second.
Then the entire room erupted.
âWhat?â
âYou mean weâre finished?â
âAlready?â
Chairs shifted, voices overlapped, and someone let out a delighted cheer.
Mrs. Wilson lifted one hand slightly.
âQuiet, please.â
Gradually the room settled again, though the excitement had not disappeared.
âYou are free for the remainder of the evening,â she continued. âHowever... there is one condition.â
Several people leaned forward.
âYou are not to remain in the house.â
That produced a few puzzled expressions.
A footman frowned slightly.
âNot remain in the house?â
Mrs. Wilson nodded.
âYou may spend the evening however you choose, provided you do so elsewhere.â
You tilted your head slightly, surprised.
Beside you one of the maids leaned closer and whispered with a grin.
âLady Bridgerton.â
You looked at her.
âWhat about her?â
âShe does this sometimes.â
âDoes what?â
âClears the house.â
âFor what reason?â
The maid shrugged.
âShe likes to have the entire place to herself once in a while. Says she enjoys the quiet.â
Another maid leaned over.
âShe drinks tea in the drawing room and reads for hours.â
Someone further down the table added,
âAnd sometimes she plays music.â
You smiled slightly.
That sounded exactly like something Lady Bridgerton might do.
Meanwhile the room was already buzzing with excitement again.
âWell Iâm not wasting a free evening sitting in the garden,â one of the footmen declared.
âAgreed,â another said.
Someone tapped the table.
âThe tavern down the street!â
Several heads turned immediately.
âOh thatâs a wonderful idea.â
âYes!â
A maid clapped her hands.
âWe havenât been there in weeks.â
âThen itâs settled.â
Another voice chimed in,
âEveryoneâs coming.â
John leaned back in his chair slightly.
âThat sounds suspiciously like a command.â
âOf course it is,â someone replied.
Laughter followed.
Then one of the maids looked toward you.
âWhat about you?â
You blinked.
âMe?â
âYes.â
âYouâre coming.â
You hesitated for a moment.
Truthfully, the idea of joining them at a tavern had not crossed your mind.
Your evenings were usually far quieter.
But the excitement in the room was contagious.
And everyone was looking at you expectantly.
You glanced briefly toward John.
He raised one eyebrow slightly.
âWell?â he said.
You exhaled softly.
Then a small smile appeared on your lips.
âWell,â you said, âit would be terribly rude to refuse such enthusiastic company.â
Cheers immediately filled the room.
Chairs scraped loudly as everyone began standing up.
Coats were grabbed.
Scarves were thrown around shoulders.
Someone knocked over a chair in their excitement.
Within minutes the servantsâ hall had transformed into a lively procession heading toward the door.
The cool night air greeted you as you stepped outside.
The street was quiet, lit only by lanterns and the pale glow of moonlight.
Laughter drifted easily among the group as everyone began walking toward the tavern at the end of the street.
You found yourself walking beside John.
He glanced down at you.
âYou appear remarkably calm for someone about to enter a tavern with this group.â
You smiled faintly.
âI believe the correct word is adventurous.â
He chuckled softly.
âI stand corrected.â
A few moments later warm golden light spilled through the windows of the tavern ahead.
Music drifted faintly into the night.
Someone in your group cheered.
And as the door opened...
The noise, laughter, and music inside rushed out to greet you.
The real evening had just begun.
The tavern was alive.
That was the first thought that crossed your mind the moment you stepped through the door.
Warm light spilled from several lanterns hanging low from the wooden beams above. The air smelled faintly of ale, roasted meat, and smoke from the large hearth near the back wall.
But more than anything...
It was loud.
Laughter bounced off the wooden walls, mugs clinked against each other, boots stomped against the floorboards, and somewhere near the corner a fiddler played a fast, lively tune that seemed to vibrate through the entire room.
The moment your group entered, several heads turned.
One of the men sitting near the bar raised his mug.
âNew faces!â
A few cheers followed.
One of the maids beside you laughed nervously.
âWell⊠this is lively.â
John leaned slightly closer to you so his voice could be heard over the music.
âToo lively?â
You glanced around the room.
People were laughing, talking loudly, some already dancing near the center of the tavern where the fiddle player sat.
You shook your head.
âNo,â you said with a small smile.
âJust lively enough.â
That seemed to satisfy him.
Your group quickly claimed a long wooden table near the side wall.
Chairs scraped loudly as everyone squeezed in.
One of the footmen raised his hand toward the bar.
âAle!â
âLots of it!â someone added.
Laughter followed.
You found yourself sitting between one of the maids and John. The table quickly filled with mugs, and soon everyone was raising drinks.
âTo unexpected evenings!â one of the maids declared.
âTo Lady Bridgertonâs quiet tea!â someone else added.
âAnd to freedom from polishing silverware!â another voice chimed in.
Everyone laughed and clinked their mugs together.
You took a careful sip.
The ale was stronger than you expected.
You tried not to make a face.
John noticed immediately.
âNot what youâre used to?â he asked quietly.
âIt tastes like bread and fire.â
He laughed.
âThat is a surprisingly accurate description.â
Around you the table had already become lively again.
Stories began circulating almost immediately.
One of the maids leaned forward dramatically.
âYou should have seen Mr. Smith last week.â
âOh no,â another groaned. âWhat did he do this time?â
âHe attempted to give Lady Featherington a bow.â
âThat sounds perfectly normal.â
âExcept he slipped halfway through and nearly took the carpet with him.â
The table erupted into laughter.
Even John nearly spilled his drink.
Another footman joined in.
âBetter than when Mr. Halford tried to flirt with the cook.â
Someone choked on their drink.
âYouâre joking.â
âI wish I were.â
âWhat did he say?â
The footman puffed out his chest and attempted a dramatic imitation.
âMy dear lady, I cannot help but admire the grace with which you chop vegetables.â
The room exploded with laughter again.
You covered your mouth, trying to suppress your own.
âThat cannot be real.â
âOh it was very real,â the maid said between giggles.
John leaned toward you again.
âI must admit,â he murmured, âI am beginning to enjoy this evening far more than expected.â
âYou were skeptical?â
âI had concerns.â
âAnd now?â
âNow I believe the night has potential.â
More drinks appeared.
Stories grew louder.
Jokes became more dramatic.
And slowly, without quite noticing it at first, the warmth of the room and the alcohol began to soften the edges of everything.
Your cheeks felt warm.
Your thoughts felt lighter.
Someone started clapping along with the fiddle player.
Then someone else stood up suddenly.
âDance!â
The shout cut through the noise of the tavern.
Several people cheered immediately.
A group had already gathered near the center of the room where others were dancing wildly to the music.
One of the maids grabbed your wrist.
âYou must come!â
âI absolutely do not...â
Too late.
You were already being pulled to your feet.
The music quickened as the fiddler shifted into another lively tune.
Boots stomped against the floorboards.
Hands clapped in rhythm.
Someone spun one of the maids in a quick circle and she burst out laughing.
The energy in the room was infectious.
It spread like a spark through dry leaves.
Soon you found yourself caught in the middle of it.
Someone grabbed your hands and spun you once.
You laughed in surprise.
Another maid pulled you into the circle.
The music grew faster.
People moved in quick steps, turning and clapping, bumping shoulders and laughing when they nearly collided.
Across the room John was dancing too.
Though âdancingâ might have been a generous description.
He was attempting to follow the rhythm while one of the other footmen shouted instructions that made absolutely no sense.
You caught his eye.
He grinned.
Then someone spun you again and the room blurred briefly around you.
The floor vibrated beneath the stamping boots of half the tavern.
Someone started singing along with the music.
Another person clapped wildly off-beat.
At one point you nearly collided with John in the middle of the crowd.
His hand caught yours instinctively to steady you.
For a brief moment the two of you stood very close.
Your laughter faded slightly.
The warmth of his hand lingered around yours.
Then someone bumped into him from behind.
âKeep moving!â the footman shouted.
The moment broke instantly.
You both laughed again.
The dance continued.
The music changed again and again.
The tavern grew warmer.
Louder.
Wilder.
And before you truly realized it...
Time had slipped away completely.
By the time you and the others finally left the tavern, the night had deepened into that quiet hour when the city seemed to hold its breath.
The noise and warmth of the tavern faded behind you as the door closed, leaving only the cool air of the street and the distant hum of London somewhere far away.
Your small group stepped onto the cobblestones in a wave of laughter and lingering excitement.
One of the maids nearly tripped over her own skirt because she was laughing too hard at something one of the footmen had said moments earlier.
Another was still humming the tune the fiddler had played, though she had long since lost the melody.
The entire walk back toward the Bridgerton house was filled with soft giggles, quiet teasing, and exaggerated retellings of things that had only just happened an hour ago.
You walked near the back of the group.
And beside you...
John.
Or rather, a version of John that was considerably less balanced than usual.
At first you only noticed the slight change in his stride.
His steps were slower.
More careful.
As though he had suddenly decided the ground beneath his feet required deep concentration.
Then he stepped onto a slightly uneven stone.
And swayed.
Your hand reached out instantly.
You caught his arm before he could lose his balance completely.
He blinked down at you slowly, clearly taking a moment to process what had just happened.
âOh,â he said after a pause.
âYou have appeared.â
You raised an eyebrow.
âI have been here the entire time.â
âYes,â he said thoughtfully.
âThat does seem likely.â
He glanced down at the street.
Then frowned suspiciously.
â...The road is misbehaving.â
âThe road is perfectly normal.â
âNo,â he insisted.
âIt is definitely moving.â
You tried not to laugh.
âJohn.â
âYes?â
âYou are drunk.â
He considered this carefully.
â...That would explain some things.â
You continued walking, still holding his arm just in case.
He did not protest.
In fact, he seemed almost pleased about it.
The group ahead of you turned the corner toward the Bridgerton house, their voices echoing softly in the quiet street.
By the time you finally guided John down the quiet servantsâ corridor, the house had fallen completely silent.
The laughter from earlier had faded. The other servants had already disappeared into their rooms, leaving the hallway dimly lit by only a single lantern flickering against the wall.
Your footsteps echoed softly on the wooden floor.
Or rather...
Your footsteps.
And Johnâs less coordinated attempt at them.
His arm rested loosely around yours, more for balance than necessity. At least, that was what you told yourself.
His warmth lingered through the fabric of your sleeve.
You could feel it every time he shifted slightly closer.
Which happened more often than necessary.
âYou walk very steadily,â he murmured thoughtfully.
You glanced sideways at him.
âSomeone must.â
He tilted his head slightly, studying you as though you were a fascinating puzzle.
âYou are very composed.â
âThat is because someone must remain sensible.â
His lips curved faintly.
âYou are always sensible.â
âYes.â
âAnd yetâŠâ
He leaned just a little closer.
â...you kissed me.â
Your heart skipped.
There it was again.
That moment.
The garden.
The quiet stars.
The memory still had the power to make warmth spread across your chest.
âYou remember that rather clearly for someone who can barely walk straight.â
âI remember it perfectly.â
His voice lowered slightly.
âAnd I have thought about it far too often.â
You stopped walking.
Just for a moment.
He nearly walked into you when you paused, his hand instinctively catching your waist to steady himself.
The movement brought him closer.
Much closer.
The hallway suddenly felt smaller.
Your breath caught very slightly.
âYou should remove your hand,â you said quietly.
âYes,â he agreed.
In fact, he did not move it.
Your eyes lifted to his.
Even drunk, his gaze was intense.
Too focused.
âYou kissed me,â he repeated softly.
âI am aware.â
âYou surprised me.â
âThat was the intention.â
A faint, crooked smile appeared on his lips.
âBut then I kissed you back.â
âYes.â
His thumb shifted slightly against your waist without him seeming to notice.
âYou remember that too.â
You did not answer immediately.
Of course you remembered.
The warmth of his hand.
The way he had pulled you closer.
The sudden intensity of that second kiss.
âYes,â you said softly.
âI remember.â
His eyes drifted briefly to your lips.
The silence between you stretched.
The kind of silence filled with something far too warm to be comfortable.
You cleared your throat gently.
âYou need to sleep.â
âYes,â he said.
âBut you should know something first.â
âOh?â
He leaned slightly closer again.
His voice dropped into something softer now.
âI liked it.â
Your breath caught.
âThat kiss.â
His gaze lingered on your mouth again.
âI liked it very much.â
Your heart beat faster now.
âYou tasted like tea,â he murmured.
You stared at him.
â...What?â
âAnd something else.â
He frowned slightly in concentration.
âI have not decided what yet.â he murmured âAnd then you put your hands in my hair.â
Your breath caught.
âJohnââ
âI liked that part.â
You pressed a hand to your forehead briefly.
âYou cannot say things like that.â
âWhy?â
âBecause you will regret them tomorrow.â
âPerhaps.â
His expression softened slightly.
âBut right now I am thinking them.â
The tension in the hallway thickened.
He was close enough now that you could feel the warmth of his breath when he spoke.
And the worst part...
You were not stepping away.
You should have.
You knew you should have.
Instead you simply stood there.
Watching him.
âYou are doing it again,â he murmured.
âWhat?â
âLooking at me like that.â
âLike what?â
âLike you did in the garden.â
Your pulse quickened.
âThat was week ago.â
âYes.â
âAnd you have been avoiding kissing me again ever since.â
Your eyes widened slightly.
âI have done no such thing.â
He smiled faintly.
âYou absolutely have.â
Before you could respond, he swayed slightly again.
The moment broke.
You caught his arm again before he lost balance.
âThat is enough,â you said firmly.
âYou are going to bed.â
You guided him into his room.
He sat heavily on the edge of the bed.
For a moment he simply watched you move around the small space.
Removing his boots.
Straightening the blanket.
Making sure he did not fall asleep half sitting.
His gaze followed you with quiet intensity.
âYou are very beautiful,â he said suddenly.
You exhaled.
âThat is the ale speaking.â
âNo.â
He shook his head slowly.
âThat is the part of me that has been too polite to say it until now.â
Your stomach fluttered.
âYou are impossible.â
âAnd yet,â he said softly, âyou kissed me.â
You looked at him again.
His voice softened even further.
âI think about it all the time.â
Your breath slowed.
âYou should sleep.â
âYes,â he said.
âBut first I was going to tell you something very important.â
âOh?â
He focused very hard.
âI think I...â
His eyes closed.
You waited.
â...John?â
Nothing.
His breathing deepened.
He had fallen asleep.
Mid-sentence.
You stared at him in disbelief.
â...You cannot possibly be serious.â
Then shook your head softly.
Typical.
You pulled the blanket gently over him.
He shifted slightly but did not wake.
Your gaze lingered on his face.
On the messy hair.
The relaxed expression.
The man who had just spent ten minutes confessing things he would probably never dare say sober.
You leaned slightly closer.
Your voice was barely a whisper.
âI think I love you too, John.â
He did not hear it.
And perhaps...
For tonight...
That was easier.
You blew out the candle.
And quietly left the room.

February 1942
The whirring of the machinery is heard throughout the brownstone. Itâs only twelve, but everyone has been fed and you need to finish this before Sunday. A beautiful red smock dress to wear with black mary janes and ruffle socks.Â
You had to, your sweet Adelaide had pleaded with you for a new dress. Not in an ungrateful manner, no, but this Sunday the Childrenâs choir would sing for everyone. So here you are, focused, pushing through the red cotton as the matching thread pierces through.Â
Bucky is on child duty. Seven-year-old Adelaide practices her reading, ever the perfect girl, sitting prim on the floor, legs out and a book between. Ten-month-old Georgie (George), named after the late George Barnes, plays with his wooden blocks next to his sister. Stacks them, then crashes them down.Â
Bucky is sat up at the end of the couch, ears pierced to the radio. The list of rationing only grew, the fear for his family only grew, many women were working now, volunteering their time away from their families. It seems things are only getting worse before they get better.Â
He sighs, deflating into the sofa at what heâs hearing.Â
âDaddy?â a voice snaps him out.Â
âHm?â he answers.
âWhat is this word?â Adelaide points at her book, as if he could see a thing. So he waves her over and when sheâs close, sits her on his leg.Â
âWhat word, Addie?â he asks and she points to the word again. âSound it out with me, âskw-er-lââÂ
She tries and tries, and within those attempts James is there to guide her along, encouraging her to try again when she doesnât get it right.
His bright spark he likes to call her at times. Sheâs intuitive and loves to learn. Every night, without fail, either him or y/n were meant to quiz her on at least ten words, like a spelling bee. If there was room to ask why, she would.
A rap is heard on the door.Â
âWhoâs that?â Addie asks. The attention of Georgie is also grabbed as he looks up at his father with an open mouth and a wood block in hand.Â

summary:
you never got the whole fighting in skinny jeans thing, so as team movie night turns into just the two of you, you decide to bring it up.
masterlist!
"you're staring, doll." he murmured gruffly, eyes still fixed on the movie playing on the tv in front of you. it was supposed to be a team movie night, but everyone had ended up peeling off about half an hour agoâbut that wasn't the point was that he was right. you had been staring at him. more than you'd been watching the film.
specifically, his thighs, in all of their majestic glory, crammed into a pair of jeans that were screaming at the seams and doing absolutely everything for you.
Assassination attempts
Tony's reaction in this Civil War scene suggests that there have been attempts on his life before from ordinary people.
That's probably why he started wearing a bracelet with a hidden armored glove that produces stun charges.
I also want to point out that even though Miriam Sharpe acted like she was there to kill him, and he suspected it even before she put her hand in the bag, he was still very gentle with her.
These details will be important when I go into detail about what happened at the end of Civil War.
