They couldn’t be far from the exit now. At least, Garry hoped that was the case. It felt as though they had been walking (and running) for a whole day, and he was honestly starting to reach his limit.
But there was something else bothering him, too. An odd foreboding feeling that had been growing within him ever since they’d left Mary behind.
Maybe it was just his nerves getting to him, afterall he’d certainly been through enough to make anyone nervous. Or maybe it was the fact that he still couldn’t remember what had happened to him in that room.
His heart started to race the moment he thought about it. Slowing his pace a tad, he took a deep breath.
He needed to relax, if not for his sake than for Ib’s. Although she seemed to be handling the situation better than he was in many ways, that didn’t change the fact that she was only a little girl.
For that matter, he couldn’t help but wonder what had happened on her end while they’d been separated. He presumed he must have gotten the worst of that situation (which was perfectly fine by him, for her sake.) But he never had really found out what had happened to the girls.
“Say, Ib, what exactly happened after you and Mary were separated from me? I presume there must have been a reason you didn’t come back.” He asked, attention turning to his young companion.
The rose that rested within Ib’s hand had been with a tight grip. She had a sudden urge to keep the item close after witnessing Mary drop her’s, and seeing the encounter that she had with Garry . . .
But she wasn’t real. Ib needed to remind herself of that, even if she seemed real. Even if they communicated about their plans of getting out of the gallery together, and saved Garry with each other, and faced so many challenges that wouldn’t make sense to Ib if she was all by herself. She wasn’t real. No matter how real she felt, she wasn’t. And Ib understands this, she’s old enough to understand this. But it felt very real, and she just lost a friend . . .
She feels like hugging Garry again. She doesn’t.
Instead she’s thinking about what she and Mary did without Garry. She couldn’t get back because of the headless statue. So many books, so many paintings. That was the basics of it. So, it’s what she tried to communicate to Garry.
She’s stopped in her tracks to straighten herself up and draw her hand across her neck. Headless statue. Show casing the books and painting were easier, as she could use her hands as a make shift book and easily pretend to paint across the invisible canvas in the air as she walks beside him again.
