sweaty   palms   gripped   plastic   as   the   rhythmic   sound   of   leather   scuffing   concrete   echoed   down   the   street   ,   a   honey   sweet   voice   accompanying   every   movement   ;;

Banana   ,   banana   ,   banana   split   , What   did   you   get   in   arithmetic   ? Banana   ,   banana   ,   banana   for   free   , What   did   you   get   in   geometry   ?

she   would   stop   ,   out   of   breath   &&   smiling   from   ear   to   ear   ,   retainer   catching   the   afternoon   sun   .   ❝   want   a   turn   ?   ❞   hands   on   knees   ,   a   pink   bandaid   carelessly   moved   by   a   rogue   thumb   .                      

cotton   candy   pink   lips   which   once   displayed   a   sunny   smile   were   now   pressed   in   a   thin   line   .   whether   it   had   been   caused   by   something   ,   or   was   simply   a   symptom   of   her   age   ,   something   had   gotten   under   lo’s   skin   &&   she   had   no   problem   letting   it   show   .   it   was   pure   unlucky   chance   that   caused   her   to   look   up   just   in   time   to   make   eye   contact   with   a   nearby   figure   ,   and   when   she   did   ,   the   girl   forced   a   faux-smile   to   spread   across   her   face   ,   not   looking   away   for   even   an   instant   .     ❝   Can   I   h e l p   you   ?   ❞                   

face   pressed   to   the   pet   shop   window   ,   dolores   could   only   just   contain   her   urge   to   enter   the    building   .   if   she   strained   enough   the   back   wall   could   be   seen   clearly   ,   a   wall   that   was   made   up   of   even   more   glass   ,   and   behind   THAT   glass   little   balls   of   fluff   were   visible   .

grey-blue   eyes   were   tracking   queen   victoria   (   what   dolores   had   named   the   smallest  white   &&   lemon   pappilion   )   as   a   small   part   of   her   young   brain   wondered   if   it   would   be   possible   to   smuggle   a   puppy   in   and   out   of   the   house   for   the   foreseeable   future   .

❝   Are   you   getting   one   ?   ❞   lo   asked   ,   hoping   that   the   figure   next   to   her   could   at   least   partially   quench   her   puppy   thirst   by   allowing   her   to   pet   the   animal   they   may   or   may   not   have   been  getting   .   there   was   a   high   chance   ,   she   knew   ,   that   the   person   was   simply   passing   by   ,   but   asking   couldn’t   hurt   .             

a   blur   running   down   the   lobby   steps   quickly   turned   into   a   flash   of   pink   &&   red   bouncing   its   way   towards   the   hotel   bar   .   with   one   quick   jump   not   quite   appropriate   for   her   surroundings   ,   dolores   found   herself   sitting   atop   a   stool   ,   smiling   at   the   bartender   as   she   handed   him   a   fist   full   of   pocket   money   &&   ordered   a   shirley   temple   (   extra   cherries   ,   please   !   )   .

with   spirits   up   &&   a   drink   in   hand   ,   lo   glanced   around   the   room   ,   captivated   by   all   of   the   living   happening   in   the   small   space   .   she   wondered   about   what   all   of   the   people   would   do   once   they   got   home   ;;   did   they   have   families   ?   pets   that   they   missed   ?   for   a   moment   her   mind   wondered   to   the   old   hamster   she   had   accidentally   killed   years   ago   ,   deciding   that   maybe   it   was   better   if   the   people   didn’t   have   animals   waiting   for   them   .

making   it   to   the   bottom   of   her   glass   ,   dolores   started   packing   the cherries   away   in   her   cheeks   like   a   chipmunk   ,   giving   it   little   to   no   thought   until   she   locked   eyes   with   a   stranger   .   ❝   Want   one   ?   ❞   she   asked   ,   shaking   the   glass   in   his   direction   .   a   small   laugh   escaped   her   ,   finding   the   situation   funnier   than   it   was   embarrassing   ,   as   a   small   amount   of   sticky   red   juice   ran   down   her   chin   .
