Mary knows Rabastan would’ve loved her. That’s what hurts the most. Not that he didn’t. Not that he couldn’t. But that he would have, if they had just been brave for just five minutes. If the war hadn’t come five days too soon.

There’s a photograph. Not of them together. But they’re both in it but barely. The duelling club of ‘76. He’s in the background, staring at her like he doesn’t know what to do with the feeling. Mary is laughing at something Sirius said. Years later, she finds along some other forgotten things from school. She tucks it inside her wallet and calls it the only proof she has that they were ever in the same world.

Rabastan read everything he could find about Muggle London. He never told anyone why. They thought it was for missions. Or hiding. But he was looking for her. Just in case. Just in case she was still there. Still breathing. Still alive.

Mary saw a young boy once with the same black eyes. He couldn’t have been related. Too young. Too Muggle. But she stopped in the street and stared. And when he looked back — curious and almost harmless — she smiled like she forgave him.

Mary goes to the war memorial alone. She touches every name. Rabastan’s isn’t there. Of course it isn’t. But she says goodbye anyway. Every year. Same time. Same date. Because someone has to remember him. And no one else will.

When Rabastan died, no one knew who to tell. There was no family left. No friends. No one remembered a girl in pink lip gloss who once stared too long at him in the corridor. But Mary knew. She felt it — like a wrong note in a favorite song. She stayed up all night wondering if she should grieve someone she never had.

Years later Mary once heard Rabastan’s laugh in a crowded street. It wasn’t him. It couldn’t have been. But she followed the sound anyway. For three blocks. Just in case.

Rabastan is extremely ticklish. To the point he's unable to stand still. Mary abuses this knowledge on a daily basis.

Imagine this:

What if Mary kept every memory? She pretended she didn’t. Pretended to Obliviate herself. Pretended she was free. But she knew every single day what she’d done: chose to remember someone who wanted darkness than he wanted her.

They never even touched. Not once. Not accidentally in a hallway, not during a duel. And now she can’t stop thinking about what his hands might’ve felt like. She imagines them over and over. Different each time. None of them are right. All of them still hurt.

Rabastan found her name on a list once the war broke. A Mudblood/Muggleborn watchlist. He crossed it out when no one was looking.

Time to spread more of the holyserpent propaganda! This time with a fic!

And Rabastan thought — not for the first time, but perhaps the first time seriously — that maybe Muggleborns weren’t as vile as his father said they were. Some of them sat beside you when you lost.

Mary only started listening to punk because Rabastan came one day to school after the summer with a lip ring. (she’ll never admit it though)
