An update about the development of the Holthinrichs Watches Ornament 1

In recent months much has happened in both the development of watch as well as in my life. As some of you may or may not know the last phase of my studies in architecture is in full swing, and in July, I expect to graduate. This requires a lot of time so I had to adjust my schedule for the watch. Thereby I’ve discovered that the whole process of the development of the watch itself also takes a fair amount of time. When the post-processing began in September, I could not simultaneously ordering the dials and other parts, because there was a risk that certain details had to be adjusted during or after the process of making the prototype.

1st phase of post-processing successfully completed. The first step in the post-processing of the prototype is finished. The model of the case is finalized and all the printing-processes are being optimized for production model of the Ornament 1™ cases. All the important tooling is done to a high standard, with tolerance levels as small as a hundredth of a millimetre. Special attention was given to the extra fine thread for the case back which lies recessed in the case. It had to be sturdy despite the small amount of room available in the sleek watch case.

2nd and last phase of post-processing started, movement supplier found and dials are ordered! Now the end in sight! 3D printing and finishing were the most crucial aspects in the process. After this had been completed, the next step in post-processing is being made. Selected surface areas will be slightly polished to obtain a nice sheen. By doing this, a contrast will be created with surfaces that keep their coarse 3D printed texture. The initial polishing will be done by machine, and then finished to a high standard by hand. Parallel to this process, the first dials are being made in Germany in a small batch to test the special Ruthenium finish in the overall design. I expect this to be very beautiful. In addition to the work on both the case and the dial, a choice has been made concerning the strap. Furthermore I have found a source for the movements. Because of the high quality, solid performance, classical construction containing a small second as well as its small dimensions I chose the ETA 7001 as the heart of my project. And, despite the strict delivery policy of ETA, I finally managed to find a supplier. This means The Ornament 1 will have the quality movement it deserves.

Next steps to be taken: The last steps in in the production process will be the testing of different shapes and materials of the hands on the physical model, as well as the finishing of the movement. After that, all that remains to be done is ordering the gaskets and the crystals for both the front and back. Then the Ornament 1™ will be ready for assembly. By that time you will receive the next update!

I`ve just finished working on a heavily damaged Valjoux 92 chronograph movement. Normally one would throw this movement away. I see it as a challenge to restore it, replacing as few parts as possible.
