INSTITUTION OF THE PRAYER OF THE ANGELUS

On June 28, 1456, the Roman Pontiff Callistus III promulgated a papal Bull that officially linked the ringing of church bells at 12 noon with the praying of the Angelus throughout Europe.

This measure was taken with the aim of unifying the prayer of all Christendom in the face of the military threat posed by the Ottoman Empire, which at that precise moment was besieging the city of Belgrade following the fall of the Byzantine Empire through the conquest of Constantinople in 1453.

The Pope urged all Catholic faithful to stop their daily work upon hearing the bells and pray three Hail Marys, unanimously asking the Virgin Mary for her intercession for peace and for the victory of the Christian armies against the Muslim enemies threatening Christendom in Europe.
