he wasn’t a 'bad guy’ necessarily. he did stupid teenager stuff like throw parties or get into fights, and for a long time that made him King Steve and people knew his name and he almost fit in somewhere, but then he fell for nancy and he wanted HER acceptance above all. he cared about her and tried to be considerate about things he didnt understand himself. he took his time and waited until she was ready to move forward in their relationship. he didnt run and tell people immediately. he tried to reassure her that she was okay. he broke jonathons camera because he wanted to stick up for her honor. he ran back into a house and fought a literal monster because he couldnt stand the thought of disappointing her even further and letting jonathon be the one she accepted into her life and not him. he worked on his college essay even though he have no (0) idea what to do with his life, because that was the acceptable thing for a boy like him to do. he ignored billy because thats what nancy would have wanted. when nancy called him out and called him bullshit and said that their relationship was also bullshit, he lost his source of acceptance. he was no longer King Steve, and that was made clear even further when billy arrived and topped him at everything he once prided himself on. the kids wanted someone to protect them, so thats what he did and they accepted him. billy wanted a fight and it was an 'acceptable’ reaction to fight him, so he did, and doing so made the kids proud of him and that made getting his ass kicked worth it. nancy wanted to move on from steve and he had to accept that, even though losing her meant he didnt have a place where he 'belonged’ anymore. he tried and tried to be the steve harrington that other people wanted him to be, and if you focus solely on how many sides to steve there is in the show, its not hard to spot that he doesnt seem to know who the real steve harrington actually is.

steve hasnt suddenly turned into mom steve. just like he wasnt suddenly a good guy when he started dating nancy. steve finds a role and tries to fit himself into it, while also sticking to the roles before it as well. you can see it especially in scenes like the “i’m sorry/what the hell am i sorry for” one where steve bounces between the two roles he had been part of longest: King Steve and Boyfriend Steve.

• Billy and Steve bicker AAAALL the time, over everything. Demogorgon tries to kill them and they’re still bitching at each other as they’re fighting it. No matter how dire the situation, they’re still gonna bitch at each other. There is never a bad time for sarcasm and sass.

“Do you want me to save you or not Harrington?!” “At this point I’m gonna take my chances with the damn hell-spawn monster over you, Hargrove!”

• Being chased by demodogs, sass.

“Hargrove, just take my hand and get in the fucking truck!” “With that Wheeler chick driving? I’m safer on the ground with these things than in your death trap.” “I say we see whose faster, the dogs or Billy.” Nancy sneers from the front.

• Even during sex it’s like a competition to be sassier than the other and win the “fight.” Or the bickering leads to sex.

“Harrington I swear to god if you don’t stop whining I’m gonna give you something to really cry about.” “What are you gonna disappoint me in bed like you do to all your lady friends?” “Ohh hoho, if you’re trying to take a spin on this dick you’ll have to ask nicer than that.”

• Just sass and snark. All the time. And a lot of sexual innuendo from both sides. Steve bends over to grab something and sees Billy staring and he asks if he likes what he sees teasingly wiggling his hips.

“Jeez Hargrove, take a picture, it’ll last longer and you can jerk off to it on your own time.”

Billy licks his lips in that super subtly way where he probably didn’t even realize he did it and Steve just like, gets uncomfortable realizing he went to far and they’re both quiet.

Finally Billy shoves his hands in his jacket pockets and mumbles, “I mean I’ve seen better, but if you want me to hit it that bad I’ll take one for the team. Especially since Byers and wheeler desperately want you to get laid already and move the fuck on.”

Steve gets irritated and walks away, “you wish I’d let you tap this ass, too bad I don’t fuck trash.”

Billy yells after him, “you seem kinda offended by my pity fuck for a guy who doesn’t care!”

• Steve realizing his attraction to Billy and one day shit goes wrong and he’s like, “oh fuck me.” And Billy smirks, nobody else catches it though.

• They continue before eventually it leads to an almost fight.

Billy holding Steve down on the couch as he’s struggling to get free and mouthing off as usual.

“Jesus Harrington, put those fucking lips to a better use then complaining.” “Make me Hargrove.”

i feel like before billy, steve would have been like really vanilla, like he’d get off on feelings and emotions and ‘making love’ and none of the shit billy is into.

A smirk is a bit smug or a bit amused but slightly contained. It’s just that little upturn of one corner of the mouth. Smiles are closed lipped or open, bright, toothy smiles, but it’s always both sides of the mouth. Grins are toothy and sharp or bright or manic, but they’re out there and big. Smirks are just the little half-smiles that are a bit hidden and private.

Cackles are loud and sharp and can be happy or dark or evil. Cackles are the villain lording over their success, or cackles are the hero throwing their head back and cackling with uncontained joy at their friends’ humour.
