“As long as I can actually do it,” Lena says. Kara hardly gives her half a second of self-doubt.

“You can,” Kara says decisively, abandoning her stretches to get close and gently take Lena by the shoulders. She looks so intense, so singular in her focus. Lena wants to bask in it just as much as she wants to turn away. With how consumed she’s been lately by her unruly emotions, it’s been a while since she was so inundated with strictly physical attraction to Kara – when that familiar shiver runs through her, it’s almost like greeting an old friend. “You’re the best dancer here, Lena. I know you can.”

“That’s categorically untrue,” Lena says unsteadily. “Especially with you in the room.”

“Okay, of the stars, then,” Kara says, rolling her eyes. “You’re the best of them, and everyone needs to see that. It’s my job to show them how good you are.”

The shiver turns into a quake.

“…okay,” Lena whispers, her voice cracking. “Okay. I can.”

“But, uh, you’re with me, right?” Kara asks as her best friend sits down in front of her.

“Always,” Lena answers.

She wears a soft, dark-colored sweater which hangs slightly loose from her shoulders and an easygoing smile which seems to have been permanently etched onto her lips after the two seconds she stood at the door with such an unreadable expression, it seemed like she’d walked into a room full of strangers.

Lena’s eyes settle on Kara’s, and she can’t breathe. The air around her feels hot and too dense — not made for Kryptonian lungs, after all.

“I’m gonna get some more wine,” she announces, voice tight and clinging to her own throat, and only after she’s back does she realize she probably should have offered Lena a glass, too.

“I… I can’t hear your heartbeat. I keep listening for it.”
