Its similar to why you cannot put bad people in a class of their own. The moment you do that you stop being able to see the bad things that the people closest to you do a la "my best friend couldn't have said that racist thing, they're not evil."

The moment you think you are immune from this type of backslide into right wing nonsense is the moment you stop questioning yourself enough to keep yourself from backsliding into right wing nonsense a la "I mean im not antiscience, im vaccinated, I just think that fluoride in our water supply is imparting children's ability to learn as fast as they otherwise could without it."

Two things are central in order for you to make a good adaptation of a book: maintaining the essence of the story (so main plot points, characters motivations and the general direction of the plot) and the essence of the characters (which also includes the characters motivations as well as their personality traits). What the show is doing is changing the story to enhance both things, the storyline and the characters.

The movies not only changed main plotpoints (Percy not knowing who his father was until said father needed his help, Percy having to take a quest to clean Poseidon's name, Poseidon helping Percy by giving him the pearls, Percy having to sacrifice the possibility of saving his mom in order to stop the war, etc.) but also completely disregarded the characters main personality traits and motivations. That's what pissed most fans off and, specially, the author. So don't compare the changes the show is doing to the changes the movies did when only one of the adaptations (two, in this case) felt like watching a bad fanfic.

We know for a fact that they will have the debate next episode.We legit hear Percy telling his mother to "hold fast" in the preview, what do you think that's about ? It's very obvious. Which means, they are making the choice to leave without her, meaning something is going to happen to the fourth pearl, it's a way to make it more heartbreaking for us. To have the hope, just to be crushed at the last moment.

And the solstice passing is to show that Percy is no longer passive in the quest. He is free of it but he is doing it anyway. He is making the choice to be here and he is invested, not only as Sally Jackson's son but as Poseidon's son which will culminate next episode (or in episode 8, it depends) when he defeats Ares with the waves, with it being the first time he deliberately, calmly decides he is going to use the waters (instead of accidentally or in a moment of panic in the tunnel of love).

You can dislike the show and the changes, that's valid but stop nitpicking before we have the answers. It's the same as the Oracle debacle. It wasn't in episode 2 so that means they are not doing it, and then it was in episode 3. We don't get the fates in episode 1, so that means they are not doing it,and then it was in episode 5. We've been doing that since the beginning.

clearly conrad and cole are both the broody yet caring older brothers while jeremiah and alex are the friendly and sweet younger brothers, but the comparisons end there. and to be honest, it’s a disservice to your precious conrad fisher to equate him to cole simply based on you shipping him more with jackie. not even two dimensional shitty book conrad intentionally would’ve amped up the flirting with belly while her and jere were clearly together. i don’t give a shit whether cole had feelings for jackie, as soon as her and alex got together he should’ve taken an automatic step back. not to mention that cole’s safety blanket of “not doing relationships” is really just the douchiest excuse in the book to openly treat women badly, play with their feelings and get away with it. he deserved everything he got at that bonfire for how he was treating ellen and the other girls and his brother’s relationship. for a man who spent whole episodes swearing up and down he would never have stolen alex’s girlfriend he really didn’t have any problem doing exactly that. so, no cole is not conrad, really his behaviour aligns more closely with jeremiah if we’re really being honest here.

i know we’re supposed to see beneath cole’s hard exterior and recognise his heart of gold and his true love for jackie despite everything, but i just can’t. regardless of alex’s clingyness he’s still leagues better than cole and did not deserve what was done to him.

you see it a little when he’s asking Lucy if she’ll take the job (if she’ll stay), then a little with Kipps (telling Lucy not to stay), a bit when his charming words, a weapon as real as his rapier, fail completely on Barnes

but the first real break happens when Lucy’s possessed because he’s completely unprepared for this and it has nothing to do with the ghost and everything to do with how she’s touching his face and how she’s looking at him (like she loves him, like she means it when she says that). and worse, how she’s asking him not to hurt her (he’s afraid he will one day)

then again when Barnes tells Lockwood to fire Lucy (that he won’t be able to let her stay), probably because there’s no one to see his face. his mask shoots right back up as soon as he turns around. 

and again when Lucy threatens to quit

“we need you [I need you].” 

“why?” 

“because [it’s too soon to tell you this] because you’re [someone I already can’t stand the thought of losing] you’re Lucy Carlyle [and you make everything better]”
