Considered to be the first million dollar picture in history, its original budget of US$250.000 spiraled out of control, reaching an astonishing US$1.225.000, becoming the most expensive movie ever made up to that time.

Erich Von Stroheim’s perfectionism demanded real props, such as real haute couture dresses from Paris, russian caviar, champagne and all things porcelain! - among many other eccentricities.

Originally to run over 10 hours, the films was heavily cut and today it’s been restored to a bit more than 2 hours; it stands, however, as one of the great achievements of cinema, undisputed proof of Von Stroheim’s genius.
