The chevre chaude melted in Joy’s mouth as the sun warmed her skin. There was no place like Provence in winter. If she could have spent her entire life here, she would have.

As she chewed, Joy turned in her chair and watched the people around her. When she heard someone speaking English, she put her sunglasses on and turned to look in the opposite direction. Americans were so embarrassing.

However, Joy couldn’t shake the feeling that she was being watched. She turned around slowly, took her sunglasses off, and looked at a woman seated at a nearby table.

“It’s not polite to stare,” she said. 

He pursed his lips. Why couldn’t they have buried more than just his father’s body? Surely there were bits and pieces of his legacy that could have been allowed to rot away.

“Yes well he had an awful tongue too,” He answered not hushing his voice in the slightest. “Learn to wield it like a sword or arrow so it serves you and doesn’t cut anyone down needlessly.”

Joy nodded. The bitterness in her cousin’s voice surprised her more than it should have. The man had lost a hand after all.
