The thing I love/hate about this scene is in the last gif a viking was trying to hand Stoic an axe - essentially to decapitate Toothless.  Maybe Stoic realized how much Toothless meant to Hiccup, even in just a few seconds; watching a dragon back down from a kill was something Stoic had never seen, and maybe he was starting to realize Hiccup had done something special.
