uryu   suffers   from   a   relatively   severe   case   of   myopia   (   nearsightedness   )   &   has   ever   since   he   was   a   child.     for   as   long   as   he   can   remember     ,     he   has   always   needed   the   assistance   of   glasses     ,     only   able   to   distinguish   items   clearly   when   held   up   close   to   his   face.     without   the   use   of   his   glasses     ,     uryu   would   have   difficulty   getting   around   as   most   objects   would   appear   blurry   unless   seen   from   a   certain   proximity.     he   tends   not   to   disclose   this   to   anyone   given   the   disadvantage   it   would   put   him   in   should   an   enemy  obtain   this   information   &   use   this   against   the   quincy   in   battle.     seeing   as   uryu   is   a   far - ranged   combatant     ,     losing   his   glasses   during   a   fight   would   invite   an   inevitable   defeat     ,     or   worst     ,     death.     for   that     ,     he   tends   to   keep   a   spare   pair   on   his   person   at   all   times.
