But from what I’ve picked up, apparently Luthor and the Justice League are basically in a race to tip the balance of the universe either more towards the ‘doom/evil/whatever’ side or to the ‘justice/good/blah blah’ side before the Big Bad finishes powering up and they like…remake the universe into another dark multiverse if Luthor succeeds in tipping the scales more into the doom camp?

So basically, the whole Year of the Villain stuff is Luthor going around giving all the villains power ups like he’s Neron and its 1995 again, because the more all of them ‘win’ in advancing their personal agendas, it all just contributes more towards evil triumphing over good or whatever.

Now, I’m biased as fuck, clearly, and not to hype my personal fave too much, but is it just me or has Dick Grayson pretty consistently been called the heart of the cape community by MANY people on MANY different occasions across MANY different continuities? And hasn’t like….every freaking villain from Deathstroke to Luthor to the Court of Owls and so on, like….haven’t tons of them made it their SPECIFIC mission to try and corrupt Dick, SPECIFICALLY, because of what a feather in their cap it would be to turn the hero that so many other heroes hold in such high regard?

I’m not suggesting like, this event all hinges on him or whatever, lol, Didio doesn’t like him enough to ever allow that, I’m just saying…from an IN universe perspective…characters have made a big enough deal in the past about his being a central inspirational focal point for so many heroes and hero teams, that like….you would THINK, with this being the specific premise of the ‘fate of the universe’ scenario they’re all faced with….it would occur to SOMEONE that like….oh fuck, Nightwing is a natural target for a villain plot aimed specifically at trying to drown out all the good and inspiring stuff in the world.

Oh AND he just so happens to be SUPER DUPER vulnerable right now what with the whole amnesia thing, and crap on a pogo stick, hey you guys think maybe somebody should swing by Bludhaven and make sure some bunch of villains aren’t trying to turn him Dark Side for the 1413242th time, by exploiting that amnesia?

They like to *say* he’s Important—all the while hinting that it’s in a truly universe-determining way—but they don’t freakin show it!

How do you constantly refer to this guy as the Lynchpin, the Heart of the DC Universe, hell, the Multiversal Constant, as trusted as Supes Himself!!!!

And then, you kinda *meh* him away from every big storyline.

I get that he’s non meta. He’s an above average Joe who vigilantes with the best of ‘em, but he’s human. Alright.

He’s Imporant because he’s a self made man, who inspires everyone left and right being who he is, and I am Cool with that.

I don’t want him thrown in a vat of chemicals, or bitten by a radioactive something or other, or have a magical/powerful/technological doodad chucked at him to make him a Heavy Hitter ™.

Although, Dick is a Heavy Hitter all on his own, not in the literal sense, but still in every way that matters.

But DC shouldn’t bandy around his Importance and tease it to mean something BIG and then not deliver!!!!

I mean, come on!!! Even the Joker HATES his GUTS!!

The JOKER. A character who’s been used left and right in some truly Fourth Wall breaking discussion, making meta commentary over the DC Universe as a whole.

That guy HATES non-meta, above average Joe Dick Grayson and dudes, I am *taking notice.*

So what gives?

At this point, I figure Dick Grayson is like an indicator species, much like the bee.

“How’s the state of your Universe? Have you checked your Dick Grayson lately?”

Problem is…..DC doesn’t want to ever let any of them be better than him because they’re too hung up on proven quantities and afraid to try and push someone else to prominence OVER him for a change….

And so you end up with these characters who by all reasoning should be the equal to Bruce by Dick’s age, if not surpassing him in most respects (like Dick only has a few less years of experience than Bruce does in total, and he was training as an athlete rigorously from the time he learned to walk. Like of course Dick should be surpassing Bruce by now….not only has he been right by Bruce’s side for most of his actual career, experiencing all of it himself…was Bruce already one of the best in the world at one of his most integral skill types BEFORE he even began training to fight crime? And so on with Cass and her skills, Tim figuring out who Batman and Robin were by age ten, etc).

Except DC was like….oh crap, we didn’t think this far ahead when we had Bruce first hyping up his kids’ potential, we can’t ACTUALLY make each of his kids better than him because like, Bruce is the guy who calls the shots in his franchise, let alone the DC universe in general. He’s the one who delegates, at most he takes a hands off approach to focus on something else while Dick delegates to everyone else, but we can’t ever actually have his kids calling him out for stuff and being RIGHT, or like overruling his plans or ideas with better ones of their own because like…he’s Batman. He has to know best or what’s the point.

And NOT sharing control is so at the heart of his character and all of his issues, we’re not gonna change all that just so his kids finally get a chance to outshine him like we literally write him HOPING they will.

So the end result is what we have with Dick here and what I think is ultimately gonna be the rest of his siblings’ fate as well if DC doesn’t learn to let change happen and let it be real (but tbh they’ll probably just reboot and deage everyone again rather than do that)….where you have these characters who are all so incredibly like Bruce in so many ways from the get go, full of potential, with extra strengths of their own and fewer of his specific problems or road blocks, and benefiting from his personal training and focus and with it repeatedly hammered in what a hardass he is about training and cutting them no slack so they can reach their peak potential….which is supposed to SURPASS his…

It really has all to do with Bruce, and DC not wanting to shake up the Bat!God image.  And you’re right that Grayson pretty much *always* gets the short end of the stick when it comes to showing his full capability.

They like to dumb Dick down, importance-wise and skill-level because of that fear that he’ll surpass Bruce.

(Um, he has already, DC).

Seriously, he has.  It’s just weird and self-sabotaging at this point that DC can’t manage a very popular, very relevant, very iconic figure like Dick Grayson.  Dude has 80 years of legacy.  Up on par with Clark, Bruce and Diana.

He arrived on the scene pretty much at the same time as the Big Three…ho shit *actually*, he debuted a year earlier than Diana did.

SAY WHAT?!!!

And still he’s relegated to support character, or lovable goofball that gets nerfed to show how Badass and Powerful another character/event is.

idk how many people i’ve known growing up in texas whose parents speak fluent spanish but they don’t speak a lick solely because their parents were afraid or told not to teach their children. it’s unspeakably common and doesn’t in any way shape or form diminish someone’s claim to or pride in their heritage.
