one of death note's strongest points to me is the first episode... the lecture in light's class (at least in the english dub) about how extinction rates have gone up 45% since 1970 hits extremely hard. he's seventeen in a world that is only getting worse, all he hears on the news is "evil," his perfect grades mean nothing to him, he can't see a better future without radical change. of course he would jump at a magic fix-it. the worst thing about him is that his heart is in the right place.
