Shayna had taken her daughter Zoey to visit the animals at the aquatic conservatory. The pair were looking at the animals in the aquarium when she heard Hess's comment. "I don't know.. I kind of like the freaky thing," Shayna admitted with a chuckle.
" alright i'm listening. my mind can be changed. what... do you like on the freaky thing? " hess still won't make eye contact with it, doesn't wanna give it any ideas, but the conversation helps her to focus. it probably isn't even that weird, but now she partially feels committed to seeing this through. " please tell me shayna, i don't wanna run outta here. "
"Oh trust me, I asked the same question one time when I was here with my daughter." Navy stated, nodding her head as she looked at the other. "The fish that look like normal fish - clown fish, puffer fish, those kinds - they're pretty cute." she nodded. "But that one -" she paused, shuttering before she pointed at the other. "Nothing about that fish does anything for me but make my skin crawl." she admitted. "Don't get me wrong I support it if that's what someone else wants but -" she shook her head. "Nothing about looking at it makes me happy at all." she laughed, shaking her head. "In fact, if I ever saw that thing anywhere near me and it wasn't in a tank you can guarantee I wouldn't go anywhere near that place again."
" see... you get me, you get me. " gestures between them, hands practically in a chokehold in the air. the fish she describes, hess has no problems with. they can be in their tanks and swim as they please. even the lion fish are nice to look at; spiny, but nice. the rest of them, she doesn't trust. she shudders. " that sounds like a grade b horror movie called the deep or the tank. no thank you. i'd be outta here with you. are you here with your daughter? " doesn't want to ruin the experience for a kid, regardless of her own feelings. she leans to look at the name tag of the fish in question, mouthing the words. " blue sea slug. " leans back. makes a face at her. " somethin' about that string of words together just sounds wrong. " aren't slugs the little things that show up on plants? in the garden? yeah, she picked those off allison's plants all the time. what the hell were they doing in the ocean too?
Elena could remember being a little kid, excited, eyes wide, clinging to her father or abuela's hand as they entered the Aquatic Conservatory, wanting to learn as much as she could. It wasn't that the ocean had fascinated her, in particular, it was just that there was so much color and shape and light... and she sometimes got to touch things in the touch pool, too. Some things never really changed, she had still entered the Aquatic Conservatory that day with a wide eyed wonder, ready to learn something new. And maybe teach a little bit, too, as she let out a laugh. "It's a sea raven. A little prehistoric looking, maybe, but kinda... cute in its own sort of way, right?"
maybe that has something to do with it. making their first good memory here as an adult, it's a weird vibe. they remember asking to come a dozen times and it never came to pass. so they started associating it (and most things) with disappointment. pursing her lips, sighing out the rest of the nerves from the sea raven. brow arches. " it does kinda look like a dinosaur. i like that. it's cute like a labubu charm, not my thing, but i see it. why's it called a raven? " hess was probably showing how long she zoned out for, but hey, she was still here. that counts for something. " i ain't seeing no fins that look like wings. unless i turn my head like this. " does a tilt sideways. there, now she can see the raven thing.
" i know it's good to learn, i just ... " stares at the nearest aquarium, suspicious of what's swimming around in it. nothing truly offensive: angel fish, the lone puffer fish, a handful of colorful ones she's never seen before, but the whole thing gives her the creeps. she rubs her arms, standing closer to the door than someone on one of the guided tours should, trying not to sound rude but β ugh. how'd she get roped into this? " i just think some things should stay outta sight, outta mind. " taps fingers to temples, a ward. " like that thing. what even is that fish? " all this learning makes her thirsty.

full biography / background
triggering / sensitive content warning: car mishap.
craved independence from childhood. hestia knew she wanted to get out on her own and watched people around her be lazy, says she wants nothing to do with that. her family has a reputation in merrock for that, and she wants to defy the odds. if asked details, she doesn't go into them; so far as she's concerned now it's in the past and that's where it stays. but she remembers walking to school and doing her lemonade and tea stands and trying out ways to get her own money made. this included working on cars.
she trialed at the mechanic shop, not knowing anything. she was there at 16 and kept going up until she finished community college. then a narrow miss: she was almost caught underneath a car when the jack broke. thankfully it was nothing more than a narrow miss but the fear stayed with her and drove her into other odd jobs. she bounced around, not keeping many, then got nervous. what if this means she really is like the people she left behind? they moved out of merrock and she didn't go with them. was she really going to keep being like that or so she thought?
no. she liked cars the best and likes being able to fix her own when it breaks down, so she decided to get back into it. she's been working in the office to be around them even if she hasn't gotten brave to be an actual mechanic again. plenty of time for that. she fills her time with a lot of community work and volunteering, and pushes against the status quo wherever she can. it means asking questions others don't want to ask which is fine with her. she hates not knowing and being left in the dark; there's a reason she's still single.
overall she likes being simple. isn't one to crave chaos and if she does, she likes being at the heart of it. gossiping at the coffee shop gives her more happiness than traveling the world for example. nothing wrong with liking the small town life, even if she's growing more suspicious of her small town every day.
