Hello! i have a question about the souls, we know that Jesse change when he give to the Saint 1% of his soul, and we see Sabina losses his soul because of Grandma L'angelle, so how do you think it affects the total removal of a soul? also! What do you think about all the soul aspect of the show?
Sorry for the late reply! (I have been out of town) - but thank you (again!) for the excellent question! That said, here are the three main things we presumably know about how souls work in Preacherâs universe:
1) A person canât live without their soul. This is something repeated over and over in Sokosha especially - because the Saint is said to be the one exception: he is the only living man without a soul.
2) Genesis works on any creature with a soul - and cannot work without a soul. From this we know that angels (Fiore), demons (DeBlanc), vampires (Cassidy), evil people (Hitler) and animals (dogs, specifically) all have souls - as Jesse has successfully used Genesis on them in the past (or in the case of Hitler, Satan referred to him as an escaped soul.)
3) Souls are valuable. Beyond souls being important to being an individual - souls are also shown to have use as medicines (curing dementia, for example) or as a power source (Gran'ma eats souls to remain alive - and Hell, presumably, needs soul energy to keep running.)
In Sokosha, Jesse seemed surprised when he hears of âfractional soul splitting.â This implies that heâd only ever seen Gran'ma extract âwhole soulsâ from her victims.
However, the soulless people in the tombsâŚthey are still technically alive. They can speak and fight, and want desperately to have their soul again. But they canât do much else. (It doesnât even seem like they age or eatâŚand they need a shot of TCâs adrenaline mix to get fighting.)
Because of this, I think that the people Gran'ma puts into the tombs - I think that they have just enough soul left over to keep fighting. They live a miserable, nearly-zombified experience. Gran'ma doesnât have the fancy equipment of Soul Happy Go Go. So maybe she never manages a complete extraction.Â
The soul that is leftover in individuals like Sabina and the science teacher are like the leftovers in a peanut butter jar.
If this is NOT the caseâŚ.then that means Gran'maâs victims are zombiesâŚbasically dead, but not quite. Which means that maybe Genesis canât work on themâŚwe donât know yet, but I could definitely see Preacher having Jesse fight zombies at some point - and this would be a good way to make that happen.
On how souls change youâŚWhen Jesse lost a percentage of his soul, his decisions became notably darker. When Sabina lost all her soul, she became an empty shell.
And when the Saint received 1% of Jesseâs soul - he changed. Even after it was removed again. He became more human. Perhaps there is still soul residue is leftover in the SaintâŚwe cannot know for sure, because Genesis wasnât working when Jesse spoke to the newly soulless Saint again.
In general, I am fascinated by the soul aspect of the showâŚespecially in how it relates to Genesis. I believe in the comics, Genesis was specifically said to be looking for a soul when it escaped - I think they have done a great job expanding on that idea.Â
I just hope it is overall consistentâŚI know that is tough to do when a show evolves over time. Hope this gives you some more ideas - and again, thank you for asking!
Jesse & Tulip:Â The best Figuer-er-outers & the toughest, most Surving-est couple around
Asked Dave Blass about an early observation of mine - toys in Fiore & DeBlanc's chest - and I am glad I did. Always happy to learn more about Genesis'....custodians.
Welcome, you sick sons of bitches. Tonight, you will see two merciless monsters fight as if their very souls were on the line. A pedophile science teacher versus a back-stabbing, piece-of-shit vampire.

that was a really good episode of preacher for the most part except for the whole killing off an entire group of what seemed to be mostly poc for no narratively compelling reason. we know that the boyds arenât âtrashâ as they were called in a racially charged scene more than once earlier this season. but the narrative has now treated them as just as disposable as the LâAngelles initially described them. colorblind casting isnât always good bc you end up with tone-deaf scenarios like this one in which an entire group of characters with tons of narrative potential are cast aside for no good reason at all.Â
tulip formed a positive relationship with sabina which I thought would ultimately at least bring her some closure considering the death of her brother under horrible circumstances (possibly influenced by the evil emanations of the Tombs themselves), and now that will never happen. Sabina dies with her belief that Jesse is the scum of the earth seemingly confirmed. moreover, I doubt they will go into the mysterious circumstances surrounding her brother Kennyâs death; it seems there will be no justice for him. and they completely dropped the ball in terms of fleshing out the Boyds as characters in a narratively rich universe they could have only added to - who was the mummified Boyd in London Lodge? why were they doing business out of London Lodge? morally, how was their work different than Granâmaâs? What I wanted to see was Sabinaâs family getting the stability and emotional closure they deserved in the wake of the LâAngelles reign and what we got instead wasâŚa whole lot of dead characters of color for literally no reason, with no impact bc they never got to make a substantial contribution to the story.Â
this show has a pretty bad record when it comes to marginalized characters who arenât Tulip - itâs killed off nearly every queer-coded character thus far (Fiore and Deblanc, those two Grail operatives last season, the mascots in season 1) and almost every character of color whoâs made any kind of contribution to the narrative who isnât Tulip or Hoover. they need to do better if they really intend to make up for the racism and homophobia of the comics in the same way they tried to give tulip agency and a meaningful narrative. if every other marginalized character in your story is either window dressing or canon fodder, youâre not doing enough.

Cassidyâs Whiskey: Symbolism & Foreshadowing
From Season 3, Ep. 5: The Coffin
Super weird question, but I canât re-watch S1 so Iâve gotta ask it: *why* did Cassidy and Tulip have sex? I know it was after robbing the pharmacy and she wasnât thrilled about it, but I canât remember her reasoning behind it and Iâm trying to all the details of their relationship over the seasons so itâs a big missing piece.
Very valid question! And important. Here are the essentials to Tulipâs & Cassidyâs one night stand (in S1E5 - South Will Rise Again):Â
---Tulip did not know Cassidy knew Jesse, and Cassidy did not know Tulip knew Jesse.Â
---Tulip & Cassidy met and slept together because of Jesseâs actions.Â
Jesseâs dismissal led Cassidy to the Toadvine, where he would meet Tulip. Cassidy spent Fiore & DeBlancâs money on drugs & sex at the whorehouse because Jesse didnât take Cassidy seriously when he tried to explain that there were people after Jesse. Cassidy defaulted to âbad behaviorâ...and acted like the kind of person Jesse treated him...like an irresponsible, drug-addicted joke.Â
It was also Jesse who prompted Tulipâs pharmacy robbery. When Tulip confronts Jesse at the diner, with a story about him and how âbadâ he could really be - he (unintentionally) humiliates and dismisses her by saying that Tulip âcan be good.âÂ
This is a big deal for Tulip, as she had always thought, on some level, Jesse understood that she was good - even if she was different, even if she was an OâHare - Jesse was supposed to understand that Tulip wasnât what everybody said she was. But in this moment, Jesse is telling Tulip that she isnât good - and that she needs to change herself like he changed himself.Â
So Tulip âacts out.â She robs a pharmacy for opioids, gets high with a vampire, and then sleeps with a vampire. Because sheâs âbad.â Like Cassidy, Tulip was acting like the type of person Jesse treated her as being.Â
To summarize...Cassidy slept with Tulip because he was already in love with her, and because he didnât know about Jesse. Tulip slept with Cassidy because she had just been dismissed by the most important person in her life - so she thought âFuck it. Iâm bad, might as well rob a pharmacy & sleep with that vampire I almost killed.âÂ
And both of them got into self-destructive behaviors after Jesse treated them like they were less than they were. (Again, this was unintentional - but the it is a great parallel to how careless Jesse is with his words - and the problems that carelessness can cause to those he loves.)

Some SDCC Trailer Observations
Thought Tulip dressed in Grail gear was shocking...until I saw Jody. Note the Japanese...Jody goes to Osaka? After joining Jesse, Tulip, & the Grail against Granâma?Â
Eccarius can fly...and he takes Cassidy with him. Cassidy: âBeing a vampire sucks.â Eccarius: âPerhaps youâve been doing it wrong.â Ahhhh oh no.
Eugene goes home. At least heâll have the eloquent & sensitive cowboy to comfort him. (sidenote: props for keeping the Season 1 mini-apocalypse relevant) Also, *obligatory sigh* Hitler works at a sandwich shop now.Â
Annnnd of course this....Granâma uses her Hell phone to chat up Satan (who is pals with the Allfather) about Genesis....the spawn of one of Godâs Angels, and one of Satanâs Demons (we know from Season 1 that Satan does not know about Genesis...and it was important that it stay that way.)Â
