In 1983, she was appointed as British Permanent Representative to the United Nations in Geneva, but retired from her diplomatic career in 1985 to become President of Lucy Cavendish College, Cambridge. She also served as a member of the Equal Opportunities Commission, and led an investigative mission into the treatment of Muslim women in Yugoslavia.

After graduating, she worked for the Harvard College Observatory as a research assistant. She made important contributions to the study of galaxies, published in what is known as the Shapley-Ames catalog.

She studied to be a nurse, and founded the Neutral White Cross after the Red Cross refused to help insurgents during the war. She founded the Feminismo Internacional magazine, as well as the cooperative union Mujeres de la Raza (“Women of the [Hispanic] Race”).
