i should note that there is a metric fuckton of different kinds of Transformers media out there (movies! several tv shows! video games! different comic book continuities!). the only Transformers media that i’m personally familiar with/post about are the IDW comic books, so that’s all i’m going to talk about here.

i strongly recommend starting out with Transformers: More Than Meets The Eye, where a ship full of emotionally complex nerds go on a very dubious quest in space, get up to hijinks, and have feelings – it’s the perfect genre blend of action, sitcom, and almost fanfiction-esque emotional beats. it’s also one of the best-written pieces of media i’ve ever had the pleasure of consuming, it’s generally accessible for new readers, and there are multiple canon gay romances (if that’s something you’re looking for). 

here’s the general reading order for MTMTE: 

to start out, you’re going to want to read The Death of Optimus Prime, a one-shot that sets up both MTMTE and its sister book, Robots in Disguise. It comes bundled in the first trade paperback, but you might miss it if you get your comics another way. 

after that, read More Than Meets The Eye #1-6, the 2012 More Than Meets The Eye Annual, and More Than Meets The Eye #7-22, in that order

at this point, MTMTE and Robots in Disguise have a crossover event, Dark Cybertron, which i highly recommend skipping for now and continuing on to More Than Meets The Eye #28. i like Dark Cybertron, but it’s very confusing if you don’t know what’s been going on in Robots in Disguise, and you don’t need to read it to understand the rest of MTMTE. all that you really need to know is that Zrtngeba vf na Nhgbobg abj, naq jr cvpx hc n srj arj perj zrzoref (copy and paste into the linked website to decode the spoiler). 

read MTMTE #28-57 

after #57, MTMTE gets relaunched under the title Lost Light, which is currently ongoing. it’s the exact same story and same writer, just with a new name. there are currently five issues out, so once you read Lost Light #1-5, you will be caught up with the rest of us! 

after that, you may want to check out this chronological reading list for IDW’s Transformers comics! Robots in Disguise and the Windblade miniseries in particular are very good, especially if you like political drama/tension/intrigue. 

you can get More Than Meets The Eye through the physical trade paperbacks, digital downloads, or less legal means (they are very easy to find online, though i encourage you to buy them if you can!).

1 cup Washing Soda (not Baking Soda. Different things.)

1 cup Borax (not Boric Acid. Also a different thing.)

Step one: acquire $5 bag of baking soda from Costco.

Step two: lay that motherfucking baking soda out on a baking tray.

Step three: bake the baking soda on a tray in an oven at 400° for 1 hour (to make the moisture evaporate, leaving washing soda)

You start a game of DnD with a blank character sheet. Your DM has them all. You only discover stats and things as they become relevant.
