she hesitates in her retreat, cloak hiding her identity in the shadowy, cobblestone street. he was foolish, wasn’t he ? the gods-damn idiotic magic user who had somehow gotten past whatever had kept it from working properly the past ten years. celeana sardothien cursed whatever god had decided she’d gained a conscience for foolishness like his. everything had a price. magic had a price. and the gods-be-damned idiocy that this man had displayed using his powers; he’d deserved the fate that had almost befallen him.
yet she’d happened upon him, and she’d heard the words spat out about chasing down children they’d heard had been born with magic - and she’d reacted. she’d reacted and now she had a warlock following her to show for her act of weakness. arobynn would have a field day with that one. she just hoped he never had to find out. her head turns, and her eyes finally land on the man, “ who gets away with magic and uses it like that?”
‘ only people who are very pretty and very, very likeable, ’ he says breezily, keeping a relaxed stance some two or three feet away from her. ‘ i wouldn’t advise trying it ‘til you’ve sorted out your attitude. ’
he can’t see her face, but he can tell her shoulders are tense with irritation which checks out nicely against his new and exciting theory. the fiery-eyed child of his memory had an impressive temper for a girl of five, and he’s reasonably confident that he is, in fact, looking at little aelin galathynius all grown up. he cranes forward on his toes, trying to get a glimpse beneath the hood of the cloak, then rights himself upon realising that it’s a lost cause. all he can see is a particularly shapely, alabaster chin. it’s a nice chin, but it doesn’t prove anything.
