there were a lot of genuinely funny moments from when i was reading Pinocchio last month but i think the thing that will stick with me the most was not an intentional joke at all, but rather the fact that the final line ends in an ellipsis--the footnote at the back of the book (about 25% of my copy is made up of footnotes giving historical context) explained how much academic speculation this has caused. did Carlo Collodi end it like that because he thought he might continue the story again someday? is there a thematic or symbolic meaning to it? was it simply a stylistic choice?
the footnote went on to explain that Collodi was reportedly once asked about the meaning behind this ending. his response? "i don't remember having ended it like that"
ranking pinocchio looks from every adaptation i've seen so far
pinocchio (1976): 10/10
this is sooo stinking cute i love everything about it. easily my favorite adaptation as well, the entire musical is so charming and heartfelt. i cried a little
the adventures of buratino (1975): 9/10
very cute and charming. i love his pompoms and his little socks <3 the open-front jacket is also super fun and unique
the adventures of buratino (1959): 8/10
look at this. look how cute he is. by far the most cohesive of any pinocchio/buratino outfits. papa carlo said my son will be color-coordinated
pinocchio: the series (1972): 7/10
also very cutesy. the blue hair and ripped hat add a lot of character imo
pinocchio (1940): 6/10
look everyone knows this one. it's a classic for a reason. the outfit works and it's cute. love the lil alpine hat
buratino, estonian opera (2019): 5/10
it's a perfectly serviceable outfit and there's nothing wrong with it. the entire opera has a very stripped-down approach to the costuming and this works in that context. very clearly taking inspo from the '75 film which is cute :) it's also rly cool seeing traditional esotnian motifs worked into the costumes bc almost every single one has florals
the golden key (1939): 4/10
tbh the quality of the film doesn't rly let you make out the outfit up close but from the promo pics it's pretty cute! i like the scalloping on the shirt hem
pinocchio (1965): 3/10
this is like. whatever. disney but slightly to the left. not horrible but doesn't make much of an impression either
pinocchio (1911): 2/10
it's. hm. yeah
pinocchio (1972): 1/10
i don't like this man.

I've heard that you're the expert in all things Digit, do you know what the synth in his chest is? I'm 90% sure it's custom synth meant to just look like the popular ones of the time but if so it's a really good custom job
i guess i am the expert in all things digit lol
i actually had never thought about this before! i went and did a little bit of research to see if i could find an answer for you :D
i don't think his synth is any specific one in particular, but it seems to be inspired by 70s synths, like the ems synthi 100 and the steiner-parker synthacon
you can see some similar knobs and paneling here!
digit's is almost definitely a custom job-- the henson company has incredible attention to detail!
thanks for asking! i don't know much about synthesizers, so i had fun looking through different types of synths :))
hi so. I actually got to see him on display at the center for puppetry arts last year. here's a close up photo of his chest! being able to see the paint detail is incredible
Hold up, why haven't I thought of this before…?
Did Phantom of the Paradise provide any inspiration for Digit???
