Well that not true, happiness is not a choice at all... What if someone is living in a third world country there family killed and they have nothing, you will just say be happy? Seems like you don't know what your talking about
So, you are saying people not living in the third world are more entitled to happiness? I get the other reason, but now you make it look, in terms of happiness, that third world countries are inferior to other countries. Also, I think that materialism and the âpossessionâ of friends and family shouldnât be at the core of happiness.Â
As far as I know, there is no technology enabling mind-control in usage. Focus equals power, anonymous. What I think about, that I will become. I can either drown in circumstances, or I can float by changing my thoughts and perspective.Â
Of course I would be sad and mourn for my killed family, but then again, did you know there are cultures that celebrate death (the Ari Muyang in Malaysia for example)? I was taught and raised to focus on the negative in such situations. I am not saying the hurt we feel is self-created, there is probably some biological response, but what I do say is that we have some control in how long we dwell on it and how much we feel sorry for ourselves. Â
Another example, lets say you believe in heaven and your mom just died. From an egocentric perspective (not in a bad way) you could be sad; you just lost someone. However, you can also choose to be intensely happy, your mom is going to heaven. I know people who became Christian just because they could find some consolation in it after they had lost someone. This consolation adds to their well-being, making them less sad or more happy.Â
Beliefs are what are at the core of happiness. The sun makes me happy. Rain makes me happy. I believe I donât need much more. When I am walking home and the skies pour all over me, I can focus on the negative (wet clothes), but most of the time I start to walk slower and enjoy the experience. Â
If you believe life is a damned, then it will be, no matter what. Beliefs are just like an Instagram filter; it puts focus on a pallet of colors.Â
Have you seen or read The Great Gatsby? A marvelous story. In the final moments of the film, he was waiting at the pool for his lover to call him. She would call if she desired to be with Gatsby, instead of Tom Buchanan. Right after the phone rang, he got shot. But while he was falling down to meet his death, he was sort of happy because his girl called. However, it turned out that it was his best friend calling. Gatsby would never know, but in that moment, his belief made him happy.Â
Perhaps, all this makes a poor example. Life isnât this black and white. But from my own experience, I believe I do know what I am talking about, anonymous. You might disagree with me, and that is fine. But I refuse to believe that I am living my life according to circumstances. Whatever happens to me, only I decide what I think of it. Happiness is a choice. The mind is free.
*As a rich white person, that has everything, does not know what happiness is and generalizes everything, I would like to add in some replies to messages I received (donât mind me generalizing please):
Anonymous:Â Happiness is NOT a choice. As someone whoâs been depressed for years, trust me- It is not a choice. Depression and mental illnesses involve the chemicals in your brain, which you canât control. I am working for happiness, and thatâs something Iâm proud of. Itâs not a switch I can turn on. If it was, I would have by now. But I have to work for happiness because I have to survive what my brain does against my will. That doesnât make me weak either, it makes me strong.
Answer:Â It is you that decided to work for happiness, right? If you can decide, you have choice. It is that easy. I am not saying one can flick a switch and be happy instantly. All I am saying is that you are empowered to make decisions. You can make the decision to be as happy as you can possibly be. You might be less happy than someone without depression, but still, you decided to work on it. Also, I never said it does make you weak and I will never say such a thing. In fact, I agree that it does display a lot of courage and willpower.
Anonymous: you sound like you have everything, of course you are happy. you sound like a spoiled person.
Answer: ok.
Anonymous: You canât make generalizations based on your own experiences. Everyone is different and reacts to life and trauma and happiness differently. Thereâs nothing wrong with that, itâs part of what makes everyone unique. But only looking at your own experiences and expecting everyone else to live the same way is a bit closed minded.
Answer: That is indeed close minded. Who said that? I mean, I am not the one that expects people to live the same way I do. However, I did discuss that happiness is to a certain extent, more attainable through choice. And yes, that is from my own experience. But if you donât want my experience, would you want me to quote Eric Thomas? I would love to share his story.Â
I think happiness is a choice, but people tend to think of choices in terms of picking an ice cream flavor. You choose it, then you have it. Happiness is not the same kind of choice. Happiness is not something you possessâitâs not material. Just as much as sadness, happiness is a way of living. Almost every choice you make will affect your way of living. If you shape that into a positive way of living, then you are choosing happiness.
I like the ice cream example you gave. Most people are used to instant gratification; hungry? there is food in the fridge. You want a new shirt? Go to the shopping-mall and you have it. Most people are programmed that they can get everything immediately and with almost no effort. That is why people sometimes give up, they want something that is hard to get and start to believe they will never get it because it takes too long. However, the things that are really worthwhile, need to be worked on Every. Single. Day.Â
Depression is an illness. You canât just choose to no longer have cancer either, so why would it be any different with depression? You can choose to try and stay positive, but staying positive and being happy are two different things.
The guy never said you can just get rid of depression if you choose so. He said you can choose what to think and do and not that you can change your emotions or feelings. Most times emotions follow thought and action tho. And GOD positivity and happiness are indeed two different things BUT they are related. Read please. Â
YOU NEED TO READ THIS!!!!!!
As someone who suffers from type II Bipolar Disorder, where depressive episodes are much more frequent and often than mania, I can say I wholeheartedly agree that happiness can be your own decision. It isnât an easy thing to obtain via said decision, but it is still a decision. The thing is, when one is experiencing depression, it is very difficult to even make that choice. I would know. I have spent weeks in bed, not able to get up, wallowing in my own self-pity and sorrow, convincing myself that there is no end to my own suffering, but it is simply not true. I was diagnosed 6 months ago (have suffered from mental illness since I was 14, I am 21), and it has been a very rough journey, but I have finally started feeling happiness. Genuine happiness. And I have worked very hard for it. Different things work for different people. For me, I found God, and I also changed my diet, and have kept myself as busy as possible. Now, I obviously still have bad days, and even bad weeks. That is the disorder. I have been on medications for it, and I am technically supposed to be taking Lithium, but I choose not to because it is a terrible, terrible drug. My defence is that I donât have type I, which is a lot more severe. I am currently being weaned off of Valproate. Anyway, what I am trying to say, is that happiness is definitely possible, by choice, no matter what chemical imbalance from depression you have. I literally tell myself everyday, that I am going to try and have as good a day as possible, and thatâs absolutely okay if I do not. I remind myself that God loves me, and He would not have given me this disorder if He did not think I could handle it. The saying âWhat you think, you becomeâ is honestly so powerful and should be practiced by all daily. With enough practice, it really does work. I swear by it. But you must be prepared to put in the work and effort. It has taken me almost 10 years to get to this point in my life. I believe in you all. And if anyone ever wants to come to me to talk, please do. We all need support. xx
If you are only going to read one thing today, let it be this
I get so many messages saying âyou do not acknowledge depression, because if you did you would understand that happiness is not a choice.â I actually do acknowledge mental illnesses.
If @electricâindigoâ says the disorder gets the better of him every now and then, then I believe him. You might want to follow this amazing personâs example because compared to him, there are so many people throwing in the towel so quickly saying âI canât choose happiness because I am depressedâ. By no means I say you are weak, but you have to get up again some day and try again you know.Â
Let me tell you something you already know:
you are not your depression.Â
It is up to you how you interpret that sentence, I donât really care if get a dozen more hate mails.
One more thing to the people making assumptions. That I didnât say a single word about my experience with depression, doesnât say I donât have any experience with it. Do you want me to shove it in your face or what? Jeez.Â
Why do people always, and then I mean always, have to make it go about themselves?
