one of my most ambitious pieces yet! i wanted to have a general wha print at my upcoming cons before indulging in doodles of specific scenes and characters :)

here’s the rough version for comparison! my initial sketches are always super imprecise, i’m just trying to figure out composition and color. i ended up using a ton of colors to add to the whimsy and magical feel, which is always a challenge compared to a monochromatic or complementary color scheme

overall i’m quite happy w how it turned out! i was very much doubting myself throughout the process, but i think the lined elements and the painted elements combine better than i’ve been able to combine them in the past

i think i ended up liking the lineart stage of this more than the final version, but ah well

my hot art take of the day is that it’s better for your learning process to finish a piece than focus on making it beautiful! i went through the longest phase of abandoning things halfway through or giving up as soon as i didn’t like the direction it was going, but learning how to make a piece “feel finished” is an important technical skill that you only learn by making stuff you might not be the proudest of.
