“you’re killing me,” jed announces, in full dramatics as he sinks down in his seat until his chin is all but touching his chest and legs are outstretched in front of him, “keep this up, and you’ll be lucky if your life lasts even that long.” the threat is an empty one. one look at jed and anyone could see that, with his lopsided grin and defeated position on the sofa. sighing, he finally collects himself long enough to turn all his complaints into a sorry excuse for a pout. “what’s wrong with watching coco every other night? it’s healthy to cry, you know.”

❝ i DIDN’T, shit i must be really out of the applebee’s loop.❞ shaking her head as she spoke, tone made to seem as if she were truly being serious. ❝ two for one and karaoke on the same night, maybe that’s the secret to success they stumbled upon. i can guarantee you it’s been LONGER for me. ❞ stated with a short chuckle, in fact, jasmin probably couldn’t remember the last time she’d even stepped into one. as avery continues however, a wide grin spreads across tanned features. ❝ i would be HONORED to be your tester, though you’d have to tell me whether you want drunk or sober jas, cause they’d give separate results. but that actually sounds like a fun idea. different from the standard, which is always good, so it sets you apart from other bars around here. well; like you said, you’re a talented guitar and piano player, so i don’t doubt it’d take you long to learn a few more songs for a set list. considering you haven’t fully announced anything yet too, it gives you time to practice. ❞ with a bright smile, she mulls in thought for a moment or two. ❝ mm – nah, i’m thinking it feels like more of a long island type of night for me, please. ❞

          she boos him. loudly. “ you just lost a yelp star, thane. ” pulling out her phone, jules zooms the camera all the way in on his face and hits record. “ say that again, into the camera, so i can make ’ hateful barkeep ’ go viral on the internet. and by the way, if i even had the capacity to love someone, you’re not on the shortlist. ” jules is teasing him, of course, because she’s yet to meet a thane that’s on her bad side, and she figures that’s because they’re not really from the city. her phone vibrates and she checks her messages, typing quickly before putting it back into her pocket. “ you’ll have to talk to my manager, avery. i won’t just sell merch at any establishment. whiskey sour, ” she says quickly, before he starts the next drink. “ and what’s that specialty ? wearing a dress shirt like a flannel ? lifting ideas from applebee’s ? ”

     “it’s a dollar margarita. your expectations might be a little too high, ave.” she playfully pats him on the back, chuckling at their banter. “i always go with the classics for karaoke but i’ll give it my all. i’ll even throw in some choreography if the song allows,” she promises. “try it out for ONE night. make it seem like a one time only sort of deal. maybe once a month if people seem to like it,” she suggests. if the idea was too applebees-esque, she didn’t want to suggest anything that would compromise what avery had put into his place. besides, ANY location could technically be used as a karaoke bar if you felt like causing a scene. “this place is already a thousand times better than applebees — without or without karaoke. now, let’s discuss the idea of doin’ brunch solely because i want bottomless mimosas.”

spencer was convinced that the way the man in front of him articulated was more fascinating than most people he spoke to on a daily basis. maybe it was the thrill of finally having the hint of a conversation with the owner, but he finally felt like the moments leading up to coming to the bar all lead up to this. spencer had a flare for the dramatics, so he knew that this one conversation wasn’t going to make up for the many times he’d hung out at the piano bar with no other purpose other than to get drunk and wonder how to grab the attention of the owner. taking another nervous sip of his beer, spencer turned his attention to a couple of other men sitting at the bar. they all seemed to be in their late twenties to mid forties, so it seemed that avery was right. this definitely wasn’t the space for college kids looking for a drunk night and a quick hookup. he was caught by surprise as the blonde asked his intentions, nearly coughing up the beer that he was already fighting the urge to gulp down just to get rid of his nerves. it wasn’t so much avery that made him nervous, but rather the prospect of interacting with a man who was much harder to read than spencer was. spencer was quite private himself, but he preferred the people he wanted to get to know to be open. in a mere attempt to dodge the question, the man inquired, “are you saying your beer isn’t top tier shit? that this budweiser i’m drinking isn’t the finest beer in all of new york? perhaps, all of the world?” he couldn’t help but chuckle at the james bond-esque introduction. subtly wiping a hand on his pants to get the condensation from the beer off, spencer’s lean hand shook avery’s. “i’m spencer clarke. pleasure to meet you, avery.”

now , avery wasn’t a very nosy person. he liked to know things , sure , but he didn’t need to know everything. but SOMETIMES every met people that piqued his interest , and this photographer did just that. he couldn’t tell why - maybe it was the regular visits that didn’t seem warranted , maybe it was just avery’s brain making excuses for himself because , well , look at him. regardless , avery felt more intrigued than he normally would , and it wasn’t uncommon for him to get to know his regulars. that’s why they were REGULARS , after all ; and this may have been the first repeating face that didn’t have a conversation behind it. and now , it finally did. though avery wasn’t nosy , he was good at reading people - maybe it was because he was charmingly closed off himself ; a friendly mystery that people didn’t realize they had to unpack. he notices , immediately , that his question is deflected but he doesn’t push - YET. instead , he laughs , shaking his head. “ well you’re the one who ordered BUDWEISER. there’s much better beer you could’ve ordered though - i’m not much of a beer guy. ” he speaks , lifting his old fashioned that he had nearly forgot due to the conversation he was having. “ pleasures mine , spencer. ” he speaks , shaking the others had before letting his hand softly drop to the counter. “ can’t help but notice that you didn’t answer my question , though. why do you come here ? if it’s not for the crowd and it’s obviously not for the beer. ” he speaks , adding in a joke so it sounds less accusatory and more curious. 

“i think you’re missing out on the fact that you are just turning down making money hand over fist here.” he shook his head, because this whole conversation had been ridiculous from the beginning. karaoke was at least as ridiculous as mud wrestling.” he glanced down at his phone. “okay. well, consider this. body shot tuesdays. i mean, your bar staff is… killer. and i mean, you could be top shelf here.”

" i think you need to remind yourself of the vibe i’m going for here , joey. if i wanted a nightclub , i would’ve opened a night club. a place called the piano bar isn’t meant to be sexy. ” he feels like he’s talking to a BRICK WALL , but he’s not bothered in the slightest. “ i’m pretty sure you’d think i was top shelf anyway. ” he jokes , flashing a grin with his words. “ i don’t think body shot tuesday is gonna be a thing. add it to the turned down list. ”
