We left on uncertain terms, we met on middle ground
We’re in love
We didn’t turn our backs on each other, just backed away slowly until we couldn’t be seen
I stood at the horizon waiting to see if you ran back to me
In the rain I waited through the cold I didn’t budge and the hottest sun couldn’t burn me enough to leave that spot. I wondered if you were waiting just out of view, I didn’t give up, I thought you
Would see me at the end and I rushed to get there. I wasted so much time!! I hope I’m not late
Years went by, two at first I wrote you everday, the words were always hopeful. The faces I’ve met
Changed my heart made it hard and dark, I pushed everyone of them away I held the image of
You in the foreground as I powered to the end, my love turned to obsession the only emotion strong
Enough to endure the pain. More years went by I don’t know how many, some passed in the blink of an eye, others lingered for eternity. I spent a year in silence, to learn how to listen, I spent a year in fear to learn how to cope with it. I turned years into building blocks that would set the foundation for the life we would build together. The picture I have of you is faded now, the edges are tattered and your face is all but gone. I slid my thumb across your face eveytime I felt I lost my way and now its a blank spot and my love is now faceless. I made it to the end, back to that same middle ground we had left so many years ago. I never made a life for myself because I hate packing memories. My hair is grey from worry and stress, my hands have more scares on them since the last time you held them, my body is chiseled and hard from all the work I put in to meet you on this hallowed ground. I waited at the line for you the same spot I waited for you to come running back to me, I always questioned that decision but thought I was strong enough to see it through. You never came, you didn’t show up. I fell to my knees and grabbed for the earth beneath me, my heart beat slowed to a patter. I found a way to take peace in knowing you found something better in your life, something more important than showing up this day. I wrote “I made it” in the dirt and left my heart there to prove it.
