I don’t think The Narrator’s evil. Hell, I don’t even think he’s that much of an asshole, comparatively. I picture his actions like a caged creature trying to keep itself entertained so it doesn’t start chewing on its own leg just to feel something.

Everytime I see people calling him evil, like as an example let’s say the Countdown Ending, I’m…really confused? Who’s in power here? You activated the controls. That’s a dick move. You know that would put everyone in the building under your control, and The Narrator’s a dick for trying to stop you? Really?

“He’s mean to Stanley,” you’re the person controlling Stanley, and he has no idea. To him, Stanley’s just being an asshole. The only time he’s ever aware that Stanley isn’t in control is in the Real Person Ending, and he’s fucking furious. And in that ending, he’s constantly talking about how much better Stanley would have been, and we see how nice he can be with Stanley when they’re working together in the Confusion Ending.

Oh, he told you to jump off the ledge? You can’t die. You can’t even feel pain. It means nothing.

But Stanley can feel pain. We see it in the Zending. He limps. But The Narrator isn’t the one telling him to repeatedly climb those stairs. You’re making him. You’re going down the paths that lead Stanley to his death, and you’re blaming The Narrator for the choices you made?

if were talking about the restriction of freedom, lets talk about gun control laws. lets talk about everything going on in tennesse and florida. lets talk about that town in missisipi that just lost their right to vote in and out judges. but if someone who doesnt give a shit about those giant, life changing things wants to tell me that theyre oppressed because a video app is being taken away, then im not going to care.

Both of my parents have bigotry issues, but I didn't find that out until later in life, because when they interacted with me as a kid, they respected the people around them that were different. I distinctly remember being very, very young and my mom explaining to me that one of the men at her work loved a man instead of a woman, and I remember being given the express impression that this was something my mother expected me to respect and treat normally. If she felt any other way about it, I never would have guessed because she respected him in practice, consistently enough that I can truthfully say that as a young child, I was raised by my very Catholic, highly conservative, vehemently Republican parents to respect non-straight individuals. Regardless of my own sexuality (which ended up being non-straight) or their own beliefs or understanding.

I know my mom doesn't really get or condone it, because we've talked about it since, but that's kind of my point. I grew up with that respect as an expectation, that was the example they set regardless of whether they understood it, which allowed me to interact and learn more easily with this group/community, and were I to have children of my own (which I won't), they would be able to start from a point of having me both respect AND understand. And hopefully that would mean that they would have an even greater capacity for acceptance and love of folks different to themselves (or the same, if it turned out that way).

That's how societal change works, that's how large scale change works. It's generational. I don't need people to understand, I need them to respect me. The generation that learns respect up front will be ready to learn to understand, but right now trans people are getting harassed and murdered and shit. I don't care if someone understands why they shouldn't harass someone, as long as they have the basic civility to not fucking do it. Respect is even a step above basic civility that I will happily take.
