how could he hate her? the mere question dumbfounds him. he grew up with her, taking bubble baths while his mom took pictures as keepsakes, having sleepovers, going to kindergarten hand in hand. pushing tommy porter down in second grade because he pulled her hair on the slide, studying for seventh grade geometry, crying in her arms after his mother had died. he was made up of two halves ── scott & heather. when heather started silently fading away with the gusts of the wind, he was left half - empty, forced to fill that void with other people. how could he hate her? ❝ i couldn’t. [ … ] i’m just angry. at myself, at the world. maybe a little bit at you. ❞ the admission scrapes by his teeth, honeyed gaze fixated on his hands that fidget anxiously in his lap. he has the staggering urge to reach out uneasy hands & touch her, but he balls his fingers into fists & resists. what if she isn’t real?
❝ don’t you think i deserved to know that you were okay? ❞ words are tainted with an aching hurt that he tries to swallow, amber hues glimmering with moisture. ❝ i blamed myself, heather. i never stopped blaming myself ── or thinking of you. ❞
❝ angry at me for dying ? ❞ look at that ! a poor attempt at a joke ! and yet laughter spilled from her lips, of course the worst timing would push her morbid humor towards the surface. her fingers played with the sleeves of her massive hoodie, the fabric dated and faded from its previously vibrant colors. it hit her — this used to belong to him. summer before freshman year, beacon hills weather was nothing short of predictable, and yet one wild summer night resorted to hailing and a ten - minute spurt of cold winds. of course she was clad in nothing but the scampiest of fits she knew her mother would chastise her for, skin revealed and ready for the kiss of the sun, now filled with goosebumps and shivering that didn’t escape her for the rest of the night. he gave her warmth. and she couldn’t let go of it, hadn’t been able to. in a way, it marked the end of an era. ❝ you deserved to know, you deserved to know so much more, and i wish i could change how everything happened. ❞
she swallowed down the tears that threatened to erupt, ❝ i’m so sorry. ❞ it was a miracle she managed to choke that out without stumbling over her tongue. bitterness coated her mouth, how she grew up with him just to stifle the feelings that taunted her, to bite down every bit of urge, and he thought of her ? ❝ you didn’t kill me, stiles. you didn’t do anything to cause what happened to me. ❞ and yet as soon as the words left her mouth, she felt a sliver of upset — what if he hadn’t left her, would she have lived through the night ? her fingers clenched, bones cracking under the weight, and she released, moving one hand to rest in the empty space between them : an unspoken invitation. she won’t ask, not without fearing his rejection.
𝚂𝚃𝙸𝙻𝙴𝚂 𝚂𝚃𝙸𝙻𝙸𝙽𝚂𝙺𝙸.
the corner of his mouth twitches, the twisted expression of sympathy daring its way onto his face. was it sympathy or guilt? maybe a cruel concoction of both. his hesitance to meet her eyes stems only from his own culpability. the way he abandoned her for his new clique, the way he dragged her back into his life just to have the demons of his reality strike once again. ❝ i don’t hate you, ❞ he sighs without any hint of certainty. why didn’t you come back? the selfish question echoes in his head ── why didn’t you take away my guilt? feet hesitantly shuffle against the carpet, the once familiar room seeming so strange now, like a distant memory. he carefully sinks into the soft mattress, the few feet of distance between them nothing short of agonizing. ❝ i didn’t sleep ── didn’t eat. for weeks. why wouldn’t you come see me, heather? ❞
you should hate me, she wanted to say. he should hate her because it would be easier to hate herself, then. shoulders bunched as a chill ran up her spine, her body had never returned to its core temperature, and now the world just felt like death. a constant reminder of the nothingness, the emptiness, the loss. or perhaps she feared making him feel worse should he catch a glimpse of her grotesque marks adorned around her throat. ❝ i don’t know what i’d do if you did. thank you for not hating me. ❞ she wanted to laugh, her own words didn’t sound like hers — how had their last conversation been about a rushed pact in the cellar, and now she was apologizing all prim and proper. old heather would have laughed. muscles tensed as he took a seat beside her, grateful for the unspoken distance he left them. ❝ i don’t know. ❞ stupid girl, he’s there for you and you can’t even give him answers ?
nails dug into her palms, small crescents left behind. ❝ that’s a lie, i do know. i was scared, i was worried. part of me wasn’t sure you’d want to see more and i got so used to this idea that it didn’t matter anymore, that it was better this way. ❞ her chest ached, guilt sinking in deeper and deeper.

COMING HERE WAS A BAD IDEA. something that he decided once he was in the confines of her bedroom & suddenly the area seemed too small. ( was he claustrophobic ? ) the walls threatened to close in on him & swallow him , his heart pounding & palms sweating. he wipes them against his pants , not realizing the way his fingers are shaking until they make contact with his leg. heather is standing right in front of him , as though she was never once laying on the ground with evidence of death riddling her body. yet , HE STILL FEELS GUILTY. at fault for being the one that left her there to begin with ——— guilty for not being there. not only that night , but every other night leading up to it. ❝ were you ? ❞ he doesn’t recognize his own voice as he tried to call her bluff , DISTANT & COLD. as if it’s her fault that she was killed. ❝ how’d i take it ? i’d like the rundown. ❞
she couldn’t move. she couldn’t move, and yet the tips of her fingers were aching to reach out. so deprived of touch yet so afraid of it. how was she meant to act around her best friend — was he still her best friend, could she still call him that ? her back remained planted against the headboard of her bead, legs crossed at the knee, she should move. she should stand up instead of sitting like a child on punishment, but she was punishing herself. ❝ i was. ❞ she furrowed her brows, tone stern as octaves rose the slightest with indignation. he’s allowed to be upset with you, that voice chimed in. she did abandon him. still, she couldn’t help it. after all this time, she could at least search for some semblance of what her normal used to be. ❝ i get it. you hate me, i would hate me, too. ❞ adjusting so that her feet were now planted on the floor, body now sideways to him. good, now she wouldn’t have to look him in the eyes. ❝ can you sit next to me ? or if you want to stand there and chastise me, that’s also fine. i just — yeah. ❞

for the first year of her return, heather suffers from severe sleep paralysis every other night. it’s something that causes her to grow increasingly paranoid and fearful, especially considering she sees more of the dead and brief images of her ancestors. it’s chalked up to a lack of sleep and hallucination but she hates that she’s convinced that she’s going crazy, and she hates that she feels like she can’t talk to anyone about it.
okay but your fc choice for heather is SO GOOD. UNMATCHED ✨✨ she makes such a good heather and i thought it was the original actress at first too. sorry just wanted to say that 👀

the shadows that followed her ——— tethered to her every move, whispers that tugged at the crumbling reminisces of her sanity. rotting image of the picture - perfect girl, staring at a reflection she could NO LONGER RECOGNIZE. she could feel it, the way his gaze burned into her or maybe it was just a paranoia of her own ——— they all stared now, and she’d spent so much of her life wanting nothing less and now it was sickening, pooling acidic in the pit of her being. nimble digits pulled on the neck of her hoodie, hiking it up to cover remnants of death’s grip around her throat. her best friend, NOW A WALKING REMINDER of the girl she used to be ——— moving towards her bed, she laid at the top, back resting against the headboard, “ i was going to drop by. ” words heavy on the tip of her tongue, she felt so small compared to the world’s relentless attempts to swallow her whole, “ my mom told me . . . about ——— how you took it. I’M SORRY. ”
What did it feel like? It was horrible. I thought for sure I was gonna die. I’ve never felt fear like that before. The panic. It just, it… it flooded through my entire body. Then…erupted.

Britt Robertson as Sophia Danko in The Longest Ride (2015)
trying to return to life as she knew it feels surreal, as if she’s stuck in some twilight zone. people skirt around the topic but everyone’s thinking it. she’s supposed to be dead. and they look at her differently. they try to be gentle and understanding, but they also easily grow frustrated with her inability to behave the same way she used to. she’s jumpy, she can’t focus, hates being touched ---- always off in her own space. they always wonder how much time is enough before they can give up the “ special treatment ” /;
