just released version 0.2 of my lil creature creator in itch :D link is in the source
you can play it in browser now, and edit face features!! i’m very proud of it so far and am excited to keep working on it
made a new enemy for protoworld today, why not make it into a video?
This morning I built out an icon selection widget for my map editor, which I’m thinking will also be useful for adding characters.
A.W.O.L. is a brutal and remarkably varied tactical military FPS created in the Build (Duke Nukem 3D) Engine!

No more purple placeholder! I finally have the main character design. It still needs side frames to be completed as well as sprinting frames (I added the ability to sprint now with Shift) and I'm also thinking about adding blinking to the Idle animation. But this is a big step up from the purple placeholder I've had for days now. I also got some tracks finally ran up and a ready to use dialog system set up (NPC character visible by the bookshelf but dialog isn't shown in this clip) so my goal is to TRY and have a playable demo out before the end up September/beginning of August so that it can maybe help gain some notoriety, else I ain't gonna have a roof over my head for much longer. I want to TRY to make the demo at least a solid 30 minutes (and the full game around 2 to 3 hours of gameplay, if possible) but we will see what happens.
Video, Finally
So, it's not the video that I was wanting for so long, but it's something finally. And with the new setup, hopefully I'll be able to work more consistently on my actual games!
Also, I'm supposed to have a set schedule soon (it was supposed to go into effect two weeks ago, but now I'm hearing two weeks from now so we'll see on when exactly) but that'll help in particular as well! Stay tuned for more Pulsonic Dreams and J'ardscape!
I've learned some much better video editing skills for this, although it's absolutely nothing to write home about in the editing department here. Xp
Most other space games strive to have some level of realism and groundedness.
This is Underspace though. We don’t care. Fight a bunch of miniature angry planets and loot their souls, you’ll have fun.
Also all the points of interest in Underspace are now done, that’s some 70+ fully playable setpieces.

Curious, do you typically create characters and then form a narrative around them, or do you create a story and then characters to put into the narrative?
Tell me your process in the comments/tags because personally I am…all over the place and trying to gage something-
EDIT: (and where does setting come in for you? Some people prioritize it because they see it as the foundation of a story, others get to it later because they feel it isn’t super important to their narrative)
Not a professional story teller, this is more coming from a game perspective Where you start depends a whole lot on what you're trying to build. We establish a high concept first, and build up from there. What we focus on first is what we feel is more important for the story first. In a story about a grand war, the event is more the star than the characters. So understanding what that event is and fleshing out the key points would come first. Characters would start as tools to enable the event and develop from there. In contrast a story about a person's development is much more character focused. It all depends on what the star of your story is. Is it a person or group, a society, an event or even the world itself? Once you know the star you can start defining the interesting features of that star, the impact and consequences, and so on. its worth noting that they are built up together as they interact, a design choice in one area impacts another, etc etc. They grow together instead of apart as your story develops from a rough concept into a final piece
