Thinking about ask vs. guess culture lately and then I come across this Ted Talk.

I saw a show last year where the overarching theme was "What does it mean to be Canadian?" and the conclusion they comically came up with was "apologizing." It's almost a greeting, saying "Sorry" and means almost nothing because of its overuse.

All of the people I can think of who fit this description were guys looking for attention from random girls at cons. Granted, I tend to frequent anime cons and the demographic is a little different.

This gives me a sense of, "How dare you dangle your body in front of us and not intend to follow through on having sex with us?!?!" (which has a rape-y vibe)

And even if these women are in theory dressing up for the attention and recognition of their attractiveness, they are likely only doing so because the media and society have convinced women that their only value is in how attractive men think they are.

Part of me thinks that some nerd guys convince themselves that girls are like this because they need a reason that makes them feel better for why they don't have a girlfriend, when really believing things like this and acting accordingly-- either by slut-shaming them or giving up on trying to get to know her as a person based on the "fact" that she must only there for attention because she is attractive and will only just turn you down-- is going to cause more of a problem.
