Bethany "Beth" Schultz, a white woman and Omar St. James, a black man, met at an open mic night at the Listening Room and immediately bonded over their shared love of country music with dreams of making it big in the industry. The two started as writing partners then slowly fell in love and got married; a matrimony the wealthy Schultz family didn't agree with and quickly cut Beth off when she refused to end the relationship. The two lived harmoniously and continued to share their talents and life together before creating their greatest collaboration.
Lucinda Pearl St. James was born on August 17th, 1998, in Nashville, Tennessee. Unfortunately, Beth passed away during childbirth from a postpartum hemorrhage leaving Omar to raise Lucinda as a single parent. Omar did everything he could to keep Bethâs memory alive to pass onto Lucinda in the only way he knew how. He played her favorite artists Townes Van Zandt, Lucinda Williams, Johnny Cash, and Carson Graham.
Lucinda soon grew to love country music too, and frequented local open mics with Omar. The older she got the more she noticed something, none of the other singers looked like her father and were usually scouted for recording, despite being half as talented. It wasnât until she was older it was due to racism in the Country music industry despite its African American roots. Lucinda decided she was going to decolonize country music.
Lucinda started writing music of her own, and when she was old enough, she started performing it at local shows, before she started driving around the country and performing her songs at open mic nights on the East coast.
One night, she ended up in Cider Point, Massachusetts, she ended up at one fated open mic night where she met Christian Graham, a fellow musician, who she bonded with over their shared love of Country music. One- or five-dollar beers later they had a one-night stand; it wasnât Lucindaâs first and probably wouldnât be her last. This was the only one where protection was forgotten. Lucinda soon found herself pregnant.
While most would choose to end the pregnancy, she wanted the chance to be the other she never got to have, hopefully with another loving parent. Â Luckily enough for her, Christian was supportive. Lucinda moved to Cider Point three months into her pregnancy and the two decided to give a relationship a go and moved in together. Lucinda thought it might be fate; she met him in a similar manner to her parents, but the two soon discovered they were better off as best friends and she quickly moved next door so the two could amicably co-parent their daughter, Bailey.
