Hollyโs reaction has been by far the most satisfying of the evening, and when Drewโs convinced that sheโs fun-scared rather than scared-scared, he canโt help but grin behind his mask. Maybe this is the thing heโs good at? Is there such a thing as a full-time werewolf? At the mention of Nancy, Drew eyeballs the rest of the haybales with suspicion, as if the eldest Wheeler sibling might yet materialise and Chuck Norris him directly in the face. at the clarification of real dog, holly gave drew a small laugh and a nod of her head. โof course by a real dog. thatโs the only way they can talk to you. iโve never been barked at by a person before.โ it was her fault for not clarifying. โthat jump was really impressive, but i bet your legs are going to be sore tomorrow.โ though if she compared it to when her legs were sore after dance classes, it was probably worth it. โhey, spoiler alert,โ holly teased as if she were truly worried about him letting the scarecrow finale slip. if anything, the heads up was appreciated. โpoint me at whoever is in charge of next years casting and iโll go on about how scary you were right next to them. not to them where it seems forced, but super loud next to them. theyโll know.โ

โoh my gosh, iโve never been so happy to see another person before.โ the words come tumbling from hollyโs lips the second she was sure they were a real person and not some kind of scarecrow put in the middle of the maze to scare people. โi have gotten totally lost. i thought i was gonna have to start setting up a shelter, giving up to the wild lifestyle of living in a corn maze.โ holly wouldnโt last a week! โplease tell me you remember which way you came in. or have super cool hunting and gathering skills.โ
as soon as the first day of fall comes around, eddieโs mind contains nothing but spooky, scary, fun times. being a halloween baby, maybe itโs in his blood, or maybe itโs a good way to exude insane energy and not (necessarily) be labeled a freak. he was dressed as a disheveled mad hatter - top hat with a (fake) bloody feather, raggedy blazer with rips and tears he found in the back of wayneโs closet, his regular black jeans with chains dangling, and a skeleton mask for good measure. you may think chains make it hard to sneak up and scare people, but you wouldnโt be doing it right. the clanging provides just enough mystique so the person being scared doesnโt exactly know where itโs coming from or what it is.ย
eddie volunteered to work wherever a scare was needed, and at this moment, it happened to be the haunted barn. hidden to the side of the building, he heard someone walking close by and decided it was time. with his roughest and loudest voice, he jumped out,ย โwelcome, dear traveler! are you ready to solve a mystery? well, of course you are! but beware, the walls have eyes and the lights have ears, so you better be quick.โ
the haunted barn was the last place she had seen nancy. when holly lost track of her friends, it made sense that sheโd start back there to look for her sister. did she think the older girl was going to spend the entire night just there? no, of course not. would she circle back to it? it was what holly was counting on.
turns out everything is spookier when youโre walking alone. not that being brave was something holly ever really prided herself on. point proven when someone was jumping out in front of her and yelling. the words didnโt register in her mind, all of the concentration going towards keeping herself upright instead of falling over from the sheer force of her stumble backwards. "what the fuck?โ karen wheeler had drilled into hollyโs head countless times that it was unladylike, but it was the knee-jerk reaction. the kind of ugly that you cover up. holly brushed her hands over her dress, more of a self-soothing motion mimicking karenโs preening than actually wiping anything off. โwhat are you on about?โ she asked, correcting her words.

the fact that the stupid beige jumpsuit of a ghostbuster was reassuring in the crowd was something holly would never admit out loud, but the fact that she instantly gravitates towards the person wearing it says enough. it was bound to be her brother or one of his friends, right? not that many people in hawkins would wear that. at least this time, holly was proven right when she was finally close enough to recognize it was, in fact, her older brother. โmike, you know being an outfit repeater is like a crime or something, donโt cha?โ holly teased, taking a sip of the cocktail that had been placed in her hand. โare you busy right now?โ though it was more to seem polite than actually checking because holly was continuing before she got an answer. โwe should make sโmores. or carve pumpkins. or both.โ

With a bloodcurdling howl (and a false start, having missed his first cue) the horrifying werewolf jumps out of his hiding place and launches himself at the cart passing through the haunted hayride, dragging himself aboard in an attempt to freak out whichever poor passenger Mr McCorkleโs managed to rope in for a ride.
Growling and snarling as he crawls towards his victim, the moment heโs close enough, the monster suddenly breaks character to whisper, โHey, was I scary? Are you having fun?โ Drewโs voice is muffled by the stupid mask, but itโs very obviously him.
haunted hayride. the warning was pretty much in the name, yet holly was still surprised when someone dragged themselves into the cart. the werewolf mask should have been a giveaway that this was part of the ride, but everything felt like it was a movie on fast-forward until drewโs muffled voice was practically playing twenty questions with her.
โoh my god, donโt do that!โ except for the fact it was his job for the festival.ย โif nance were here, she would have, like, totally kicked you in the face to protect me.โ the only reason she hadnโt scramble to attempt a high heel to the face was that holly wasnโt flight or flight. she was freeze. โyou were so scary! iโve never been barked at before.โ technically, not barking. โiโm having a ton of fun. are you? this seems... fun. is it?โ

joyce sat quietly by the fire bundled up in an old flannel coat. silently as she watched the flames dance she tried to let herself relax after being on edge every single day. bringing her cigarette to her lips she took a drag before slowly exhaling only to jump momentโs later as she felt someone bump against her elbow causing some of her drink to fall in the dirt beneath her,ย โoh, are you alright?โ she questioned as she turned to look at the other with a concerned glance.
the cure for being super cold without putting on a jacket? moving around to keep your body temperature up, standing around the fire, and getting your legal age friends to get you as many drinks as possible. a combo that wasnโt really amazing when all put together. when holly stumbled, poor joyce byers was the target of holly reaching out to stable herself. โiโm sorry,โ she replied quickly. โiโm okay, just tripped a little.โ which was half true. โthanks, by the way. are you?โ
ย ย ย it was actually nice to be with her sibling without the pressure of the entire family trying to coordinate what they were going to do next at each given moment. there were no arguments, and especially so now that they were older. nancy was sure that if mike were with her and holly there wouldโve been some excuse to fight, but she wasnโt thinking about that. โ sure, holl, โ nancy replied with pursed lips that turned up at the corners. she reached for hollyโs hand, feeling how cold it was too, especially with her outfit. โ if iโm cold, you must be suffering. didnโt mom tell you to bring a jacket ? โ
it was a little stupid how two simple words could boost hollyโs mood so drastically, but nancy said yes. not even in an โ ugh, if you have to โ kind of way. nancy took hollyโs hand in her own, and she felt more like her older sister than a ghost that haunted their home. always coming and going, always out of reach. holly gave her hand a soft squeeze, proving to herself that it was real. not something that would disappear as soon as she tightened her grip. โshe did, but that totally doesnโt go with my costume!โ and no matter how cold, sheโd always put fashion first. โpeople are taking photos, like, all night, nance.โ
jonathan sighs, adjusting something on his camera. they give themselves a moment before looking over at the people just starting to flow into the pumpkin patch. they had already been here a few hours, conducting interviews and taking photos, actually make some use to his photography journalism degree. no one knew what jonathan came as, they had thought to themselves: if they had to dress up, they were going to do something obscure, and anyone that knew jonathan knew that his favourite band was the cure it just made sense heโd come as robert smith no matter how niche.ย โalright, mind if i take a picture? you have the nice chance of being the front cover of the paper- or at least in a section of one.โ his smile is a fake, he knows by the end of this heโs going to be tired by the use of his customer service voice and smile.ย โsayโฆโ he sighs, knowing heโs going to cringe when he finally says it,ย โpumpkin!โ
being told she could make front cover wasnโt a surprise to holly at all. favorite child syndrome or just the fact sheโs seen so many people leaning into the creepy side of the holiday rather than letting a single smear of fake blood (that would surely rub off before the night was over) be their entire costume. it was basically muscle memory to pose as soon as the camera was on her. from the moment she knew how to stand on her own, karen wheeler was drilling in good posture or the right angles for photos. the pageant smile that looked great on the mantle. it was important when your family was only perfect in pictures. โiโm holding you to that, johnny,โ holly warned in a sing-song voice. it was all going so well until jonathan said his obviously forced cue. ted came up with some silly phrases, but dads were always that lame and embarrassing. sheโd never describe jonathan as cool in the traditional sense... but not the level of โ say pumpkin! โย that, along with the physical reaction they had to saying it, holly couldnโt help but laugh. โwait, we have to take another one! you messed me up!โ she protested, fighting the fit of giggles that followed. โi canโt believe theyโre making you say that... and wear that.โ
ย ย ย her hair was teased up to high heavens as it blew in the wind โ the speed of the tractor taking nancy from mccorkleโs patch to wrightโs not helping one bit. her costume for the evening was simple, yet iconic, and she hoped she wouldnโt be asked what she was dressed as. her button down shirt was covered by a sweater with only the collar poking out, the sweater reading โ iโm a luxuryโฆ โ on the front, and โ which few can afford โ embroidered on the back. but, nancy was more so worried about not dropping her hot cider she kept between her tight grip โ cider that she may have poured some spiced rum into, but sheโd never tell.

sitting in the back of the tractor with nancy was almost nostalgic. the kind that always seemed to veer to the bitter side of bittersweet, the kind that was always played to the tune of karen wheeler telling her older siblings to take holly somewhere. โyeah,โ she agreed. despite the lecture of needing a jacket and telling her mother sheโd take one, it was halloween! a jacket would have looked totally lame with her costume. the little black dress was the staple of her costume. covering that up would be stupid. the sheer black stockings that came to her knees provided little help keeping warm, but holly was happy with the costume regardless. โthe haunted barn, huh?โ holly repeated back to her older sister, trying to gauge if it was an invite or a warning of where not to go. โwant some help finding clues?โ

ย ย ย ย ย walking through the park jennifer let out a deep sigh. this town never had a moment of peace did it? there was always one terror after another and they were getting sick of it. all jennifer wanted was one normal and peaceful year, whether it was kids acting like kids or elders sitting on their porches yelling at the youthful, either way jennifer was determined to have something go right this year. looking around as the town slowly made its way back to being normal after the freakish storm, she pursed her lips.ย โitโs all just going to hell isnโt it?โ she questioned out loud, not really expecting an answer but asking it none-the-less.
hawkins is home. that was what holly had to keep telling herself in the wake of everything. repeating it like a mantra. desperate bargaining that if she was going to give into any of the delusions sheโs experienced in the past few years, please let it be that one. โitโs not that bad,โ holly mumbled in response. words she didnโt even believe. โbut yeah, kinda.โ an understatement to say the least. โit canโt be, like, the worst place to live though.โ a lot of the horrific parts of town were more than likely just in hollyโs mind. some distorted fun house mirror version of their hawkins that she wished she could stop seeing when she tried to sleep.
[ madelyn cline | cis female | she/her | twenty ] โโ itโs just another typical week in hawkins i guess โ isnโt that right, HOLLY WHEELER? huh, guess they canโt hear me over LANDSLIDE by FLEETWOOD MAC playing on their walkman, but it looks like theyโre headed to CLASS as at ROANE COMMUNITY COLLEGE. did you know HOLLY has been in hawkins for ALL HER LIFE? yeah, theyโve been described as a bit TRACTABLE, but i suppose them also being SOCIABLE outweighs the negative. iโve also heard people say they remind them of perfectly manicured fingernails twirling blonde hair, still writing in your diary & watching the constellations with exhausted eyesโฆ however, that could just be this weeks newest rumor.
holly is the youngest of the wheeler siblings, aka the the last ditch effort to save karen & tedโs marriage. when they were both fussing over her, they could ignore the obvious problems. having a child was their go-to method to play house.
nancy and mike grew out of karenโs suffocating grip, but never holly. there was no baby following to take her place upon that pedestal. as she grew up, there was always the option to stray from everything as her siblings had before. ted was the first to check out, giving the same aloof front he did to everything else in his life. glances up from his newspaper getting rarer and rarer (but at least she still got them!) it would have been natural for her to rebel during her teen years, but she didnโt. not against her parents anyways.
something that comes with the favorite child territory is the fact she can get away with much more than her siblings. she had her wild child nights in high school bc duh.
karen wheeler is the type of mother to live vicariously through her daughters, and holly lets her. they go to the salon together and she lets mom pay for her highlights. she was part of the popular crowd at school and gossiping with her in place of nancy. going prom dress shopping and running for prom queen.
sheโs going to community college now,, which isnโt exactly where she thought her life would be going but sheโs a hawkins girlie. sheโs never gonna leave her family (even as dysfunctional as it is) sheโs also not going to jump into the work force bc thatโs worse. she pictures her life as just ending up like her mother. sheโll marry someone and theyโll have kids. sheโll be a stay at home mother. itโs a solid plan.
talking abt relationships. ahh the wheelers and their emotional unavailability. the lack of l words in their relationships. holly is the flip side to it. because ted and karen spent so long showering her with love and trying to pretend they arenโt in a loveless marriage with their newest fix it child, she throws the concept and the word love around.
disclaimer: holly isnโt even half of the bad bitch nancy is. she will not touch gross and/or slimy things. she does not know how to use any kind of weapon. sheโs more of a beauty over brains kinda gal. sue her.
sheโs had her first glimpse of the strange things happening in hawkins just after will disappeared. it was the nice thing to do, bringing joyce that casserole. everything is a blur. why she strayed from her mother, the monster in the wall, being yanked away just as fast. there was never any proof to what she saw. the wall was completely fine the next time she went to the byers house. will happened to come back from the grave, but that wasnโt the kind of thing you questioned your older brother about.
the fourth of july followed the same theme. this uncomfortable feeling that something was very wrong, but having nowhere to go with it. she believes mike and nancy know more than she does from the way theyโve drastically changed since that first brush with the moving wall, but the wheelers donโt talk. so she doesnโt ask.
part of holly feels that want to stray from karenโs grasp for once. stop taking a backseat to everything sheโs so sure is happening in hawkins. on the other hand, she doesnโt want to disturb the peace. while they never had family on the top of their lists, holly hopes that if the wheeler household is peaceful, it will be where mike and nancy decide is the safest place to land when they finally stop running. if they ever do.
this will probably change iโm ngl. iโm working on a google doc and an actual bio and all that jazz. but this is building blocks to start plotting!! love you all xx also sorry for the lack of proofreading but :/ itโs never gonna happen with me soz
jonathan didnโt want to part with many things that were currently in heather hollwayโs driveway but he knew that he needed to given that they needed a new camera. the one that they were loaned wasnโt great, but it did the job. sometimes jonathan wished that they were born richer to be able to afford all these things but they werenโt blessed with that fact.ย โthis vinyle of the clash and the smiths is pretty cool- i had gotten it signed by them personally and am willing to negotiate the price if you want,โ he says with a small smile, but wonโt ever let the other know how much the record had meant to them. they needed to continue working, even if it meant selling things that meant a lot to them.ย
having to sell your childhood belongings wasnโt a reality holly wheeler would ever have to face. not only was she lucky enough that their haunted house happened to be in the upper middle class suburbs, but she was also the not-so-secretly favourite child of ted and karen. if they were ever in the position, itโd no doubt be her siblingโs stuff on a fold-out table in the driveway. something that had the potential to make her feel a little guilty if she lingered on it too long. of course, that just meant she didnโt. โare mike or nance gonna want any of this?โ not that holly was some selfless being that thought of her siblings above herself. no, she already scoured the table to see if anything caught her eye and came up empty. who knew jonathan byers didnโt have the same taste as a twenty year old girl? however, the byers and the wheelers had co-existed for as long as holly could remember. at least, mike and will had been intertwined as long as holly could remember. nancy and jonathan had been a newer development, but itโs not like she ever got to gossip with her sister. when it ended the same as when it began, finding out through small town whispers. like nancy was nothing more than a stranger sharing the same roof.
