I know the dps fandom accepted neil shot his temples as canon but I always imagined him shooting his throat. One thing Neil had throughout the movie is his voice, he frequently speaks up for others -especially todd, but also other poets as well- and his passion is acting where he has to speak to an audience. But at the end of the movie he couldnt speak to his father and he died because of this. After his death Todd finally learns to speak up, his death symbolically gave todd his voice. Thematically it makes a lot more sense to kill himself in a way that took his voice.
