This might be a controversial opinion because it’s easy to be like Tim is perfect and can do no wrong, but I really think Tim struggles with a sense of self. I guess he basically admits to this in ep, 6 but I don’t know if he grasps how unhealthy it is.
He tries to find his identity in McCarthyism, then in Hawk, then when that ends, he goes into the Army, hoping that will give him a sense of identity, as it seems to for a lot of people. Doesn’t work, when he leaves he ends up diving into religion, and related, the Father Lawrence radical group. I think even choosing to go into prison. “Convicted Felon” is an identity, even if it’s seen as a negative one.
I hope Tim eventually figures out who he is and can let that be enough.

Would actually love to see Tim and Lucy bonding over Hawk. I loved their interaction in ep6 and it's clear that they kept interacting, like they talk again in ep7 judging by promo and Lucy asks Hawk about Tim before he leaves to see him in ep1, and she asks Tim how he is when she calls, so that means she doesn't just know of Tim but also knows about his presence in Hawk's life during their whole married life and accepted to some degree that Tim will always be a part of Hawk's and, by the marriage, part of her life. So while they're basically rivals, they as well could bond over the same problems (they both will never be enough for Hawk). I would watch that tragic friendship.

I knew Jonny was a brilliant actor, trusted him implicitly. We made a deal from the get-go that we were going to look out for each other in all of the scenes. What was amazing was watching him bring the work to set every day and then just letting it all happen on camera for the first time, and letting these characters be vulnerable with each other on camera for the first time, and trying not to overthink it or talk about it too much, but hopefully presenting it in a way that it would be alive while the cameras were rolling.

The main difference between Tim and Hawk is that Hawk strictly separates his two lives, the one he lives at night and the one he considers real, while Tim more or less accepts both.
Think about why Hawk reacts with anger and irritation every time Tim brings marrying Lucy, because at this moment his two lives meet and illusion breaks and he can't let it happen.
I guess that's probably why Hawk feels zero guilt and Tim feels all the guilt of the world, because as long as Hawk separates parts of himself, he can happily live his day leaving his queer part living happily in another world, while Tim struggles to accept all his parts, and go though the conflict Hawk never has to go through.
The whole polygraph thing makes a lot of sense in that context, as does the conversation about two truths in episode 6, with only difference that Tim let his truths collide for years until he had to choose one and bury the second completely, and Hawk just keeps them both separately and keeps living pretty much the same life.
In the 80th we can see Hawk getting steps to accept both of his lives as one, and getting tested is one of them.
